A teacher at a Durham private school underwent a sex change over the summer, sparking a debate among school administrators and at least one parent over how to approach the issue in class.

Another one in NC, is it something in the water? ;) I hope that his transition goes smoothly from here on out. While I do not like seeing someone's life being made so public, there was no avoiding breaking it to the children (and their parents) since he will likely be interacting with some children from the year (or more) before.

It's a private institution. The school can do what it wants to do. I'm surprised that they are supporting the teacher this far. This is actually pretty good news!
As far as the students go..... sooner or later, our society is going to have to learn to deal with this and that means letting kids in on the secret they already know. People have sex change operations. They see it on TV and talk about it with friends.
And guess what? They know about sex too!

Ms. Gore asked him at one point, after reading some particularly lewd and graphic lyrics, if he wanted his children to know that this sort of thing went on.
"Yes," he answered, and went on to explain that e felt it was important that his children should know so as to be better able to avoid predatory people.
Of course, the children he was saying this about were named Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen...
