Title: What to wear for my first day full time at work?
Post by: iKate on April 28, 2015, 08:34:09 PM
Decisions, decisions. They say first impressions last.

I have a couple of months to decide anyway but I have this urge to go shopping!

I was thinking either one of my nice fit and flare dresses or a pencil skirt, blouse and jacket.

Actually I want to build a good wardrobe for work wear. I want to look professional and not casual, except on Fridays.

What did you wear, did you like it, and did you have any regrets?

I didn't want my clothing to be a trigger for backlash, so I dressed very conservatively on my first day, and stayed to the conservative side for a long time.   It was probably a year after I came out that I finally wore a dress to work.

More recently, I started at a new job where nobody had known the old me.  The job requires business casual and I'm an old hippy chick.  It's hard to find anything I really like to wear there, but dresses are my first choice.   So, for that job, my first day was in a dress and it's stayed that way most of the time.

i go black leather combat boots, tight jeans and tight shirt with a long black trench coat. jk, thats just me. i say wear what you feel you'd be the most absolute comfortable in and as long as it follows the dress code if you have one.

Well, I wear women's jeans and shirts to work already, I just barely cover it up, but people see. Even my boss said I'm not really hiding.  I'm done with dressing conservatively to be honest. Go big or go home is my motto. :)

Hi Kate, it depends entirely on your role, how you interact, are you public facing or backroom...?

Don't be too outrageous, if its smart dress code or customer facing; a suit, maybe pants suit, something that emphasises waist and hips, maybe a nice blouse or knit top.

I'm only just starting to look at what my next work wardrobe will be, but I am not working ATM anyways... so can't shop yet, only window shop!!!!

I went with a blouse, skirt, shoes with slight heel combo. No tights/ph as it was still summerish.

I think it's also important to have your hair done nicely, maybe with a necklace or other accessories as you feel.

If work is in (and working with you) on the whole shebang - it'll not be a problem in any case.

I dare say you'll be fine!  :)

It's physically cold in my school and I have thin blood, so I wear an undershirt under a turtleneck. I normally wear some nice slacks (but not incredibly expensive) or a skirt and hose. For footwear I wore high-end boat shoes until around October, and then I switched to knee-high boots. As Eva Marie once said, it's impossible not to feel sexy in knee-high boots.

I have a Job that requires a lot of lifting from many levels some of it very heavy so I have no choice but to wear trousers
But I like to make up for it with pretty and bright blouses

I'm not customer facing. I work on the backend at a TV station. I may have been in B roll a few times but that's about it.

I tried a few of my fit and flares last night, I could carry the Michelle Obama look with ease. I may go for that. Going to get a few skirt suits and try those too.

Yes, getting my ears pierced and a couple of necklaces too.

I pondered a pants suit but I don't like the look so much.

I wore a my first day full-time, but after that I gradually slid into jeans and t-shirts.

I think the first few days of full time are the scariest, and it takes some time to relax into your new life.  I suggest wearing something comfortable that also makes your feel confident in yourself :).

I made sure to wear a full length dress for my first day. I wanted to be subtle. Although I believe the dress I'm wearing now, I wore in my first week and while its not super bold, its not subtle either. Its a mid length dress. Its actually my favorite dress. I think its all about confidence and day one went so well it helped with that.

I work for a software company in Southern California and our dress here is "California casual" which runs the gamut from shorts and hiking boots up to suits. Pre transition I wore jeans, sneakers, and a button down shirt. The first day I showed up as Eva I didn't wander too far from that - I had on skinny jeans, a nice top and some wedges. I've been wearing the same types of clothes ever since then and the only comment I got was from a female director who told me that she "was initially worried that I would dress badly but she sees that is not the case" lol.. My goal is casual but hip older woman and I think I hit that.

I wore a button up blouse (celery green), black leather A line skirt, knee length.  Tights with butterflies on them.  Black and white Marry Jane shoes.  It was awesome :)

I taught my undergraduate students as an openly transgender woman this semester, but on the first day, I wasn't brave enough to teach as a woman. I came out the next session, and only began dressing unambiguously from the third session onwards.

Because I had transitioned slowly in how I appeared in my students' mind from day one, I decided to do the same with my wardrobe. I wore androgynous clothing at first, then neutral makeup with androgynous clothing, then slightly more noticeable makeup with a woman's pants/top combination, then finally a skirt and pink woman's top, etc. I felt that going too big all at once might cause some issues; if nothing else, I knew I would be able to tell anyone that asked about me suddenly wearing red lipstick and a skirt that I had been presenting as a woman for a few days now, but they simply hadn't been paying sufficient attention.

I feel like a pants suit or something subtler is better for day one, and then you can go big on day two or three with something like a dress or pencil skirt--the things you mentioned. There's no one way you have to dress on day one, but it sounds like you've been doing something like what I did in my first few days as an 'out' teacher, and so going a little slower at first might be your best bet.

Hope it goes well! I'm excited for you! :)

I am an attorney and I am beginning to plan for my first day the Middle of June.  I am looking at dress slacks, blouse, jacket combo or a very nice dress and sweater.  I will be starting work in a new building and will be seeing our elected boss as well as all of the management staff at this new location so I would like to make a good first impression.

IMHO, it should be something that makes a statement and, perhaps, makeup too. Because otherwise it might just go unnoticed :). I am not even close to full-time, but I wear female clothes mostly, job included, yet people just assume that it's alright :D.

I haven't dressed yet but I would say make sure you check the company dress code as women normally have a few more rules then the guys do... also look at what the other women are wearing regularly to see what's acceptable (check what they wear against the dress code... sometimes people get away with wearing things they shouldn't and you don't want to go afoul of the dress code and give ammunition to someone that may not agree with you wearing women's clothing(and yes they are there)).   Other then that wear what makes you feel comfortable (put on the outfit before hand and make the same movements you have to make at work and see if it feels good or if it binds in some bad way) and if you want to wear heals chose some that you can walk at a normal speed and feel confident that you wont fall down in.  Whatever you choose to wear I hope you enjoy it and have fun :)

We really don't have much of a dress code and I've seen women wear everything from leggings and a t shirt to a business suit. Management wears more formal wear but it's not all the time.

The things I want to wear I've seen other female employees wearing. So if anyone takes issue with me but not them that's pretty much illegal discrimination. And NYC has a law and the company has a policy with regard to respecting gender identity. There's also an openly gay guy who wears tight pants and 3 sizes too small t shirts.

I really only need about a year or so at that job before I can quit and find another.

But I do plan to dress nice. And no I don't plan to hide who I am.

I work in an environment that requires us all to wear flame retardant clothing that the company provides we all pretty much dress the same depending on our daily activity, I some days work out of the plant and can wear my clothes for that time but mostly it is just our uniforms. but I always am certain to have my nails done and my makeup proper so I feel good about me, that is the most important thing make sure that you are really comfortable with yur choice, there is plenty of other details to distract the moment,

Several years ago while I was in the military I worked at a place in California and one of the civilian women there wasn't well liked by the other women and she wore tight tops and short skirts (like several of the other women always did) so one day the manager pulls her in the office and writes her up for a dress code violation and she pointed it out that other women were wearing the same type of clothing so the manager told her to show him but when she looked around the office all the women were within standards so she couldn't show him so later she asked around to the other women and they said it was just a coincidence and they planned on wearing their closes again as the manager was wrong so she figured they would certainly wear the cloths the next day so she wore the same type of cloths in and she was alone the manager pulled her in and fired her that day.  The next day all the women were wearing the same types of clothing as she did and they continued to wear it without interference from the manager till the day I left.  I never thought it was right but I was in the military and they were civilians so I had no influence in the matter.

Seriously I'm not saying it will happen or trying to scare you but just check it to be sure... better safe then sorry.

My workplace is very casual. We are a TV station. I see all types of dress. Only people who dress really well are management (VP and above), guests and talent.

Hi kate I work in an office setting and I have been wearing women's skinny khakis along with women's Polo or long sleeve pullover. It's fairly androgynous  but I feel like the female
Cut clothes always look more femininity  than mens. Even if it's something basic like a polo. I'm not really out at work but I don't plan on wearing anything drastically different when I come out. Personally I wouldn't be able to handle it anyway. A lot of women in my office wear leggings with a cute blouse and cardigan. That would likely be a look that I would do because I like it

Definitely take your cue from the better dressed women in your office.  And perhaps the answer is more related to the image you want to project.  The old saying, "don't dress for the position you have, dress for the position you want."  So if you're aiming for management, then it sounds like dressier is the way to go.  If not, be comfortable, but be you.

I remember my first day dressing full mode at work: I wore a nice cream coloured v neck sleeveless blouse covered by a nice black blazer, straight leg dress pants with a statement necklace - of course flats. I know I'm just 5'6 but I still couldn't bring myself to wear heels at work :-)
