Title: Lost my out of state license.. Help!
Post by: Katie J on May 08, 2015, 04:53:44 PM
I have found myself in a bit of a situation. I recently lost my drivers license and have no clue where it is. I currently live in Texas, but my license was from Colorado. If I can't find it then I am going to have to get a new license, but due to it being out of state it isn't exactly easy to just stop by a DMV and get another one. If I do end up needing to replace it, it would be with a Texas license. Now to the situation. If I get a new license then I want to have it done with my new name (still need to officially change) and change the gender marker (not so simple in Texas). Just looking for some advice on the situation as I try to figure out what to do. Thanks.

Since not having a license is really bad if you get stopped. Can you still pass as man? If so, you could get a license in your current name, then after you get all your documents proving you are a female, go back and have it changed.

When I went through transitioned, and had to change my license, as soon as I was legal I went to the teller at the license teller and told her that When I received my license, I told them that when I got my license, they screwed up and put female. I didn't think it would work, but it did. They changed it with no problems. That was just gender though. If either your first or middle name is androgynous, use that name for now and when you get yourself legal and have a new name, just go in and tell them you had a name change that needs to be corrected. Make sure you have a copy of the attorney's name change document.

People change their names for all kinds of reasons, and I'm sure they have done it before. If your DMV is large, they probably will not even remember you from the first time.

Can you change your passport and get a Texas DL with that?

I don't have a valid passport at the moment.. I still generally pass as male (unfortunately) so I could do that on my new license if I can't find my old license, just would rather not.

Usually you can contact the DMV (look up the phone number online) and tell them you lost your license and request a duplicate copy be sent to you(you will have to pay for this)... if you cant do it because you no longer have an instate address just tell them your out of state (as a student, for work or what ever) for an extended period of time and that you would like your new copy sent to your local address (don't tell them you moved out of state as they likely wont help you at that point and recommend you get a new one in your current state)
