Title: Any one know the total cost for genital electrolysis
Post by: stephaniec on May 12, 2015, 11:13:06 PM
I just talked to the electrolygist today and they say that they don't deal with the insurance company , but I may or my not get a reimbursement from them, Just curious if anyone has an estimate for the total cost for genital electrolysis . thanks

Stephanie it's hard to pin point because of the how many hairs you have to kill off and how long of sessions you choose to do. Along with how much each one chargers will differ. I will probably spend a couple thousand easy on it. Hugs

You usually pay by the hour. My electrologist charges $75/hour. I've heard electrologists charging anything from $40/hour to $150/hour.

It's considered cosmetic so it is not covered by insurance, unless it's done by the surgeon as part of the procedure.

It depends on the hourly fee of the electrologist. I never had it done until recently and getting my underarms is the best thing because there is hardly any hair coming back. yay.  Now for my reason on replying to your question --  My electrologist is unaware of my situation twixt my legs. We were talking about the business and my interest in doing the same thing. She mentioned the "transgenders" that come in. I inquired for more detail (of course) and what was that like for business. She stated that almost all of them ask for special rates because of the amount of time for the work.  She was very accommodating but was just now beginning to see some profit because she was not really making any money. She even told me that its really kinda odd doing the genital area because every time she zaps a hair, the scrotal skin moves away and she has to constantly hold on to it cause the whole part is alive plus her face is right there in it.  It was kinda funny actually because she was detailing things I was curious about but never dared ask.

So feel free to ask for a special rate because of the investment and see what you can work out. I asked her about gratuity and she said she frowns on it because its inclusive with her service. Make sure they perform the reverse current treatment on it afterwards to speed healing no scarring (she does it for all her clients).  I learned a lot from her without even trying.  I was going to use her when its my time, so she will go into a slight 'oh crappers what have I said'. But its okay... she is really nice and was just speaking bluntly.

Example calculation using Dr. Bower's recommendation of 5 clearings, a guesstimate of 3 hours per clearing, and the high end of the fee range:

5 clearings * 3 hours/clearing * $160/hour = $2400

The clearing time above might be a lot more for inexperienced electrologists, but they are probably also cheaper. :)

I choose a doc for grs who has done it during grs. There is not one hair on the wrong place. No pain, no costs....

Doing it before must be horrible.

the surgeon I'm doing this with is the only one that I know that will accept my Medicare so my choices are limited. He's highly qualified so I'm confident , but he wants it done this way.

thanks everyone for the help. I just got a email from the electrologist  and there are three people in the office one charges 80/hr, one 90/hr and she charges 100/hr . she does it in three sessions , so it seems quite doable.

Hopefully not a derail..
I'm just wondering that if electrolysis takes several sessions ( due to dormant hairs), then what makes it possible to do during GRS?  Is it a different process?  It sounds ideal, but I feel like I am missing something.

if I understand the question and also saying I'm new to this, I think the follicle sprout at different rates  so it takes separate cleaning to get them all.

You're choosing GRS with just any surgeon that accepts Medicare?

Do you know the quality of their work? o.O

That is the part that I do understand.

Knowing that information is what makes me wonder how/why ^^this^^ is possible.  GRS is a ways off for me, but I have done some snooping around the different surgeon's websites and they mention it as an option to have the hair cleared during the surgery.  What do they do to clear the hair (sounds like all in one clearing without follow-up clearings).  What is it that is done differently when done in conjunction with the surgery?

What's done differently is that the surgeon will literally pull the skin off, peel it apart, and scrape the hair follicles off from *underneath.* :) Laser/electro on skin that's still attached to the person (yikes!) has to wait for the follicle to be active to target it, but that's not a limitation for someone who has actually removed the skin entirely - follicles and all.

Then they shape and stitch it back in place in its new home, of course.

My information will probably be quite dated but I had genital electro done about 13-14 years ago and back then it was close to $100/hour and probably took somewhere around 20-25 hours spread out over a period of slightly over a year I am guessing. It basically ended up being like regular facial electrolysis, weekly sessions at the start ending, then twice a month and monthly sessions at the end. So it probably cost me around $2500 to do genital electro I am guessing. Hope that helps!

ps: Since I had to buy a 1 hour block of time minimum, and near the end there was less to do, I used the extra time to do my bikini line.

According to Dr. Bowers (I think), virtually all SRS surgeons do follicle scraping.  Given that, it appears that some believe they can do so completely effectively and others do not.   The post-ops I know personally have gone to either Meltzer or Brassard.  The ones that went to Meltzer did electrolysis first. The ones that went to Brassard did not.  (Brassard does not want it done.) Neither has had any hair issues.

On the painkiller topic, my doctor prescribed compounded cream that has 6% lidocaine and 6% tetracaine.   I never filled it because I don't need it for regular electrolysis. If I go the genital electrolysis route, I probably will.  She says this compound is far more effective than Emla, which has 2 1/2% lidocaine and 2 1/2% prilocaine.

Again I say that people should do their own research first. I went to an electrologist that specialized in genital electro for SRS surgery and knew what needed to be done. The interesting thing is that he told me he has worked on a fair number of post-op women who ended up having hair where there shouldn't be hair. This was surgery done by the "famous" surgeons including my own, Dr Brassard. That's what I was told first hand. I can only say that everything will look great immediately after surgery and for a good couple of years, but then dormant hairs sometimes resurface and next thing you know there are hairs where there shouldn't be. If you're worried then have a talk with the surgeon and explain your situation. Electrolysis on the other hand will always work in the hands of the right operator. It's your genitals so don't cheap out.
