Title: Name change plan.
Post by: michelle82 on May 14, 2015, 07:03:20 AM
I'm trying to map out a plan in my head to do my name change and sort of time that with coming out at work (full time).

I may do the name change but delay my work transition slightly Maybe by a month or two if I end up having any facial surgery.

My question is if I change my name, but I don't update my payroll information at work, will I run into any issues with getting my direct deposit? Would I need to immediately notify my bank of the name change In this case or can I just leave things be with my bank and payroll  until I'm ready to transition at work?

any thoughts?

If legal name change occurs I believe you have to update your payroll information. The name has to match the IRS records if you live in the United States. So they would know. It doesn't mean you have to go full time, but for most intensive purposes it does put result in your coming out to those who deal with payroll. It could, but it should as long as your checking information hasn't changed.

I timed my name change with my FFS; I took a month off from work to recover from surgery, and during that time went to court for name change, and went to all the various places to update my records (including my employer; they had meetings and informed everyone what was going on while I was away).

Thanks ladies, so if I understand what you are saying. If I do my name change be prepared to come out at work because payroll will need to know asap? I guess I was sort of hoping to do my name change first because I don't currently own a passport and will most likely need one for when I have ffs. So rather then having to apply for one only to change it shortly after, I thought I could do the name change and still fly under the radar for a bit, until I settle on a transition date at work.

I guess that's not realistic though.

I wish that wasn't the case but it is. I remember when I was coming to up to my name change I was told I had to let them know ASAP once the documents reflected the name change which wasn't long after it. Hugs

Your welcome. So very true, but anything worth doing generally never comes easy. Hugs
