Title: interesting doctor visit :(
Post by: lovelessheart on May 15, 2015, 08:07:14 AM
What a morning, already. So I met with my doctor who had prescribed hormones for me for the past 6 months. The meeting with her today was different than our first. Im to get a reup on hormones today as my prescription ends this month. So, she called me back to the exam room and told me before she started, " I just wanted to meet with you before we get started, I felt so bad prescribing you hormones last time you came in. It goes against my beliefs and if you are here for that today, unfortunately im unable to prescribe them any longer. If you need other things, I can still help with those, but not hormonea." Then I replied, " I never have been told that before... you didnt give me a notice..." she said that she didnt know I was coming in today and that to see if my main doctor in atlanta would work with me. This is a 4 hour drive away! . Luckily, my srs is next month and I wont need to be so fast getting on hormones or starting back , however it just breaks my heart that transpeople are so misunderstood.

That is such crap! I wonder if there are other medical conditions it's "against her beliefs" to treat. If so, I bet they're all LGBTQ related.

I'm sorry you had to experience this honey...

Wow! That is just unreal.

So she expects you to just stop? She could have at least referred you to another doctor.

Well, you will have a chance to find a decent doctor whose brains are not compromised by any nonsense ideas and fairytale beliefs... That's a good thing right?

She didnt even refer me to a doctor. She just basically told me that she wont be able to do the prescribing, goodbye. Really.

If your doctor is in a private practice, you may be out of luck.  There is a provision in the affordable care act, however, that disallows discrimination like this if any part of the organization or activity is receiving any sort of federal assistance.  That's sort of brain-dead easy for things like university clinics and such. It's also true of almost all hospitals and therefore (I presume) applicable to practices located within the hospital legal structure. I don't know if it applies to a doctor simply because they take Medicare patients.

Personally, I wouldn't go back to the doctor anyway, but you might consider filing a complaint with your states human rights commission on the basis that you were denied medically necessary care, as the AMA has officially taken the position that such care is medically necessary.

When I read about such things, I thank God that my doctor is trans.

My NP is trans, my doctor is gay. They don't judge me. They just treat me and send me on my way. Works for me.

Even my kids' pediatrician is gay. He's one of the most caring, compassionate doctors I've seen.

That's ridiculous. File a complaint. That person has no right denying your prescription. Especially if she's not even your main doctor! God, people like that shouldn't become doctors if there's anything medical that's against "their beliefs "

:icon_yikes: I'm so sorry to hear that. Definitely find another doctor. Congrats on the upcoming SRS, but do yourself a favor. She is causing harm by what she is doing though and really should be reported in for it.At least only doctor I had that didn't want part passed me of to someone, but ran the necessary tests anyways, but at least it was upfront and not like your oh oops I'm changing something. Good luck and Hugs

Good call.  Choose your battles.  Not sure what the gain would be from this one.  I am sorry this happened, too.
Focus on srs and stay diligent on finding another primary doc for care. ;)

I don't get it, your having SRS , but you can't get hormones. Anyway I think your supposed  to stop the hormones a couple of weeks before the surgery. Does her ethics prevent her from giving you hormones once you've had the SRS.

Unprofessional.

I understand that there are people who don't support us.  I may disagree with their beliefs, but I can respect them if they're consistent.  This doctor went along with it last time, but suddenly she has a crisis of conscience?  Yeah...that's really the opposite of integrity.

I'm so sorry you had to deal with that.

Exactly. Im not sure why she felt that way that will interfere with her job . Smh. It amazed me when she told me... for aome reason I had the feeling she would say that. My intuition can be right kn at times

Unfortunately georgia is a state where there is a lot of hate against the LGBT community and if you managed to ride on the HRT train all the way til SRS in georgia than that is something to be extremely proud of so please hold your head up on that!

If I were you I would really look into leaving that "southern pride" state and move to a blue state such as new york california or connecticut where such discrimination is illegal.

Congrats on the SRS I envy you!!!!

Upon reading other individuals responses yes the affordable care act does protect you
but it doesnt protect you from the doctor prescribing you a wacked out dosage

Your surgeon should prescribe some IIRC. And you should really line up a new doctor.

That doctor sounds like a transphobic jerk. See what you can do about lining up one who is more supportive.

I live in Connecticut and literally trans individuals here are equal to anyone else
In georgia however they are still a very hated group of people some even get lynched to be quite honest

If I believed everything I heard about your country I would think you were overrun with koalas and kangaroos.

Seriously, America is a big country. In many major metro areas there is no problem. I get my care from a reputable clinic attached to a major hospital in New York City without issue.

Also in my state (NJ) the laws for transgender people are better than Australia. In other states like California they far surpass what they have in Australia too. You're not forced to do things like divorce your now same sex spouse if you change your gender for example. Changing your birth certificate in California does not need surgery and the record is sealed. Changing your passport and immigration documents only needs a letter from your doctor. Things like that. If this doctor did that here she could be sued.

Sure if you go to some parts of the Deep South or Appalachia you may encounter problems but not all of America is like that.

So come on over, it's just fine.

Seattle has been great for transition so far, and Washington State's laws are very favorable.  We had a big trans meeting with lawmakers recently, and it looks like things may get even better for us.

So, the regions in the US really do differ pretty widely.

What about all the deadly snakes, and salt water crocodiles, and kangaroos, and angry yowies, and sharks, and jellyfishes, and thousands of other deadly creatures?

I think they exaggerate that stuff to keep the rest of the world from invading. In Michigan there's a beautiful region called the Irish Hills. One of the towns there is named "Hell". The locals called it that to keep too many people from moving there and spoiling it. I think Australia is the same way. Heck, I bet they named it "Australia" to confuse people into thinking it's in the southern hemisphere and make it harder to find!

Wow! We've really, really strayed from topic.

That is discrimination. I don't think doctors are supposed to let their PERSONAL beliefs get involved in treating people in office. Thank "god" I'm an atheist.

That is so strange to me. Over in Aus, the states aren't all that different. But I understand over your way, the states have a lot more independence.

I guess the rest follows in keeping with the (electoral) demographic, huh?

By far, the greatest hazards are the drink-drivers, the ultra-nationalists, and the meth-heads :~(

The other critters can at least be dispatched with a shovel, or a snow plough attached to a 4WD.

We have some federal laws. The constitution in the enumerated powers spells out what the federal govt is supposed to do. The 10th amendment leaves the rest up to the states. Of course in practice the federal govt does a lot and states do a lot too. States sometimes go against the fed such as with marihuana laws. The fed can sometimes agree to turn a blind eye or sue in court or similar.

People don't realize we are one country but we behave like 50 little ones. It's kind of good because if you don't like what's going on in one state you can move. It's also kind of bad because some states try to really oppress people for basic human rights like the right to marry or use the bathroom.

If ever you visit New York again let me know. Would love to have a pint or a cup of coffee.

States are sovereign and the Federal government operates with in the powers granted to it from the States.   So different states will operate independent of what other states do simply because they are different states and have different laws and operate with little to no influence from the federal government.  However most of the disparity between locations here with respect to Trans acceptance has more to do with local social mores then actual laws (something that will take years to change.... But it is happening even if it is slowly).  I know from the outside the whole set up over here seems a little backwards but from the inside it's fairly seamless (most people actually believe the federal government can trump the states whenever they want but actually there is very little that the federal government can make the states do)
