Title: Taco Salad Shells, to deep fry or bake?
Post by: V M on May 23, 2015, 06:46:47 PM
I know it is common to deep fry a flour tortilla to make a taco salad shell, but I prefer to bake mine

All you need is a flour tortilla, some margarine or non stick spray, an accommodating pan (I use a large 2.5 LT vision glassware pan) and of course an oven

Easy peasy really...

I like to marinate the burger in Worcestershire sauce and Balsamic vinegar a couple of hours before hand then...

Put a can of black beans on 1/4 heat to heat up on the stove

Coat each side of a 10" flour tortilla with a thin layer of margarine and place it in the pan so it makes the shape of a shell and bake at 350 F for 10-20 min.s regularly checking it so it doesn't get fragged

In the meantime get the rest of your fillings ready, I cook up my burger mix (I tend to start with some crushed garlic, minced onion and minced mushroom and then add the burger much like making an easy bolognese sauce for spaghetti

I like Romaine lettuce so I use kitchen shears to cut it into shreds, dice up a Roma tomato, slice a few black olives, dice some red onion, use whatever cheese I have on hand

Stack it all up however you like in your tortilla bowl and add some hot sauce

Have fun with it

Hugs

I've never tried this, but it sounds fun!

On my taco salad, I cheat and use Lawry's taco seasoning on the meat and crumble tortilla chips on top as "croutons".  I also like to use taco sauce as dressing with Cholula hot sauce sprinkles for fun.

Oh, and people... This is very important!  We have all been omitting a key ingredient from our guacamole this whole time- BACON!!!  You must try this.  Avocado and bacon go in Cobb salads and in BLAT sandwiches, so why not guac?

Oops!!! I forgot to mention the guac!!! No bacon in mine yet, maybe try that next time, but yeah, I made some guac to put on top  8)

I saute onions,  green peppers, cactus, green chile  and halapeno   (optional) in a frying pan with olive oil. set aside  . take tortillas and place refried beans and the sautéed ingredients on top of the tortillas and fry in olive oil until desired crispness. Take out your bottle of Mescal you've smuggled across the border and enjoy.
