Title: Between a rock and a hard place...
Post by: KaylaMadison on May 24, 2015, 11:48:42 AM
That's where my Chief says he is at with my hair at work. I haven't gone full time yet as im not out at work openly. A few supervisors know because I told them. My Chief states that my hair is getting too long and that there are uniform standards to uphold. Since I present as male at work. He's been pretty lenient with them up to this point but it seems something has to give. Either I cut my hair or I go full time. I dont know that im ready just yet to be out at work but it doesn't seem I have a choice. I suppose this is just me venting.

Come out to your boss and try to reach an understanding. Let him know you're unsure if you're ready to be full time, but that growing your hair out is part of your process. The good thing is they couldn't fire you for that if they already know because it's discrimination and would be a lawsuit waiting to happen, but the bad thing is they may look for small reasons to let you go. It is a rough spot to be in, but I think you'll be okay.

It sounds like you it's time to sort this out. Maybe make a list of the pros and cons of going full time and do the same in regards to cutting your hair. Then choose the path you can live with most and go with it. Sometimes the only way to be ready is just to jump right in with it because we always have those hiccups that in our back of our minds. I hope your able to find the choice that you can live with. Also have tried letting them know and see if there is anyway you can prolong this a bit longer. I know that may mean you have to come out to them, but it might by you time as far as being out to everyone. Good luck and hugs. Please keep us posted as to what happens.

There are only 3 supervisors above me with him being the highest, and all 3 know already.

It could be if it were based on discrimination but he's thinking more along the lines of poliicy and appearance standards. I work as a law enforcement officer for the Department of the Army. The don't really budge on appearance standards.

It's more the envoriment I work in that is keeping me from jumping in. I'm pretty sure everyone already knows. I work in the kind of place where if there is gossip it spreads like wild fire and nothing is jucier than this. My SO says I should take a couple weeks off, and come back full time. She may be right. Ill have to mull it over the next couple days since i have them off.

I think that is a great idea that your SO suggested. It allows for a clear break if you like and they can just introduce you as new person if need be. Good luck with whatever you choose. Hugs

Just to update, when i came into work this morning my supervisor had the appearance regulation printed out and ready to with trying to get me to do something with my hair. So I told her that I would be taking the next two weeks off and when I come back to work it'll be as Kayla. So that made that easier as she is supportive in the transition but was getting pressure above her level. So June 14 I'll officially be full time since i was already living as a woman outside of work.

So I officially started my first day at work as myself today after a two week leave. One major step down and so far so good.

Also on a side note I have been living full time as my desired gender they day i started leave. It hasnt been without its stares or double takes but so far nothing that I havent been able to manage. I had gone out plenty of times before but i suppose i always had guy mode to hide behind if I got to much into my head. Now I shed off the last of the guy mode and theres just me mode.

I had a staycation. Two weeks at home might seem boring to some but I loved the time off, I wasn't really ready for it to end.
