So I just heard about this! I am so excited! Here is the link to the article.

I've been watching Sens8 on Netflix - three episodes in and I'm only just starting to get vaguely interested. Anyway, I didn't realise at first but there is a trans woman character (Nomi) and she's played by a trans woman actress. I didn't realise at first because I was rather distracted by the somewhat hot sex scene between her and her female partner (played by the woman who played Martha Jones in Doctor Who). I presume Lana Wachowski had a part in developing that role since she and her brother are directing it and co wrote/created with J. Michael Straczynski.
It's not giving away much to reveal Nomi as trans, or the fact she is portrayed as a trans activist blogger since that is covered fairly perfunctualy in the first episode. To be honest the activist blogger role comes across as utterly contrived, surely they could have thought of something more interesting for her. As a result I was pretty bored with Nomi as a character until we meet her mother in the second episode who insists on calling her by her male birth name. I'd say it felt overplayed except that's how my father is right now with me. So that was really uncomfortable and had me wishing a horrible fate on the mother. But at this point Nomi's story starts to deviate from "cliched trans character" to something a bit more interesting. I won't say more, so no spoilers from me. I've only watched three episodes, I hope/expect I'll get through the rest this weekend.
Anyone else watching? No spoilers!
I will be watching it. It's Jamie Clayton isn't it? She is stunning.
Most of the time, the Wachowski's works bores me to death. I dont see whats the big deal with Matrix; Speed Racer almost killed me, etc, etc, etc...
But Sense8 got my attention. I think I will watch it pretty soon. Now that I know that it has a trans woman character (an actress), I've got even more into it!
Lets hope that Sense8 dont bores me to death either! lol
OMG, it looks awesome!
I can't decide if I want to watch it immediately or finish "The L Word" first. I've found that to be very relevant to my life.

That's awesome on so many levels; I'm definitely watching!
you can give a play by play critique if you want. You won't be spoiling anything because I don't watch TV or video or whatever.
I am totally in!!
Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks Amber for posting this. I didn't realize there was a trailer for each character. This looks so good.
Paige :)
Yea and it's out today! I have heard mixed reviews so far but that's the wachowski's though. I know many people who love cloud atlas and think it a masterpiece, despite the fact that it wasn't consider good by the mainstream reviews. So I'm gonna come in with an open mind. I'm gonna binge on this show sunday
I did enjoy all 3 matrices, but I didn't like the ending of the last one. So I think its got a chance.
I'm halfway through the first one. I have NO IDEA what is going on. I'm having a hard time paying attention. I WANT to like this, but so far..... On the other hand I didn't like Orange is the new black until she got starved out at the end of the first episode. Next thing I know I'm hooked on that show.

Let's just say I've found the interesting & engaging to tedious & dull ratio to be around 1:4 thus far. A lot of the really interesting stuff seems to happen in the first five minutes and last five minutes... leaving about 40 minutes of zzz. Hopefully it pick up from episode four.
Is anyone else watching Sense8 on Netflix the new series by Lana and Andy Wachowski? One of the 8 connected people in the show is a trans woman named Nomi, played by transgender actress Jamie Clayton who is in a loving lesbian relationship but has a more conflicted and possibly triggering relationship with her mother. Aside from just that it's also produced by J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5) and, so far, is a really trippy, interesting, wholly unique look at the metaphysical convergence of human experience.
An interview with Jamie (http://collider.com/sense8-jamie-clayton-talks-wachowskis-her-character-and-more/)

I'm watching it but finding it fairly slow going - it certainly has some good moments here and there but a lot of it isn't that engaging. Just when it seems things a re picking up they drop back into tedium and while the premise is promising they're still mostly stumbling around looking confused halfway through the series.
I must say I found Nomi's mother incredibly confronting, I know that's the intention - she's a transphobic misgendering cow and she sickens me big time. And the thing is it isn't even overplayed - I know there are parents out there who behave exactly like her (my father isn't quite as bad but then he doesn't have power over me like Nomi's mother believes she has over Nomi). I don't know what the big conspiracy is that the sensates are supposedly facing but to me Nomi's mother is the most vile and evil character so far.
Kind of wish Nomi hadn't been an activist/hacker/blogger... just seems kind of cliche but I can see that they'll probably be calling on those skills at some point - and hey, these days you really need a hacker in just about any team. At least she wasn't a sex worker, which would have been an even bigger cliche. Maybe I'm just jealous that Nomi's in a relationship with "Martha Jones" (Freema Agyeman who played a companion in Doctor Who)... I've had a crush on Martha ever since she first appeared!
Anyway, I'll keep watching. It reminds me in many ways of Cloud Atlas but even loooooonger. I hope I can get to the end and feel the nearly 12 hours will have been worth it.
I've seen 2 episodes now. It JUST started to get interesting in episode 2, but just barely. I switched back to "The L Word". I actually have a pretty good idea what's going on and its like 100x more entertaining. I just got my blu-ray copies of Orange is the new Black in. I may switch to those or just check out the bonus features since I just saw both seasons online. I wish I had known they were coming out on blu-ray sooner.
I really like Naomi so far she reminds me of another trans women I know. I don't think that her being an activist was a bad choice because their are lots of us that are activists and the media doesn't really show that with trans characters usually so that is cool to me. I am to episodes in and I like it so far.
It's good, I'm totally in... 2nd episode... "go F**k yourself Aquinas"
omg I don't agree with the critics at all with this show I was only gonna watch the first 2 episodes because im watching the show tomorrow with my friend, but im on ep 5 now. I love it!!! so much emotions!!!!
ps don't tell my friend im on ep 5..... maybe 6 by the time aye gets here.
May be worth getting the free trial for this....
Have a lot of OITNB to watch in the meNtime however.
I would delay oitnb until after. Laverne is amazing but the shows writing was like hormones this, surgery that. it is kinda tedious how many of her lines are about her transition. So far, aside from the first time Nomi (Jamie Clayton) is shown where she is injecting a shot probably E, they haven't had her mention hormones. Which I like because cis people even allies get really obsessed with our transition because other media outlets do out a huge focus on the transition itself.
It's doing a good job with her as a character, indeed most of the other characters are getting some good development but I just wish it would pick up the pace and get on with the freaking conspiracy. I just finished episode 7 and the characters are mostly bumbling around in a daze wondering if they're going nuts.

It's as if they don't really know what else there is to talk about!!
And I say, hey yeah yeah, hey yeah yeah
I said hey, what's going on?
LOL. As I long suspected, 4 Non Blondes unites us all.
You'll know when you get there. ;)

That part was amazing!!! Gave me such a big smile! ;D
I'm on episode 7 and oh my Godlessness!!! I am in love!
Just added it to my list.
I am a little curious about the amount of sex, violence, and language.
I'm not a prude. I just don't know what the standards of Netflix are like. I had HBO for a while, but I was turned off (lol) by just the overabundance of the aforementioned things. Personally, I feel that you don't always need to have a lot of those sort of things in a show or a film to be adult.

Um I am going to be honest. There is a whole lot of sex, nudity, and violence. The show can get very steamy very fast..... If those things bother you it's probably not the best thing for you :-\
Half way through episode eight. I'm finding Nomi's story to be the most interesting followed by the cop, only because they're both getting involved in the conspiracy. The others are reasonable characters but some of their sequences really bog the overall story down. Kind of wish it would get to the point already!

Just watched this episode. Absolutely loved it. I don't remember ever smiling like that for a tv series before.
Paige :-)
Currently binge watching.
I'm three episodes in but I'm finding it hard going... The script is so clunky sometimes and a few of the characters are quite one dimensional, and their roles are a little bit cliche. It's great that it's trying to be diverse but there are so many subplots and very little actually happens that's interesting. I'll give it another few hours and hope it starts to have a bit more purpose and narrative.
I watched the first episode last night and my first impression was, 'Wow!' I guess I will need to view a couple more episodes to really be able to venture an opinion, but I know I'm looking forward to watching episode 2 this evening.
Just finished the first 12 episodes. I love this series, I hope it continues.
Paige :)
I haven't even finished it yet I will by the end of the week end though

I watched the first two episodes. :-)
Was surprised at the sex scene between Nomi and Amanita (Amaneta ?) right away. Did not bother me at all.
What did bother me was opening the series with a suicide. A very graphic one at that.
Still I am going to watch. The characters are damn interesting and feel incredibly human and real.

I am really pleased with the sex scene. I mean you can really tell that a trans women made the movie because it wasn't like let's make sure to show her genitals when we get the chance. It's nice that they haven't even mentioned whether or not nominated got the surgery....
I loved this show. I watched in a few days, hope they get a season 2.
The sex scenes and other explicit scenes were a little to much for me, but I really enjoyed everything.
Nomi, Lito and Wolfgang are the best for me

Fixed the typo for ya! ;-)
I really liked that sequence because of how it was shot. It wasn't carnal or exploitative. It just
was. So that was just really nice to see. Like people have sex in this world and it's
normal.
I'm only up to episode five, but how awesome was that 4 Non Blondes sing-a-long? It put the biggest smile on my face. Made me dance around in my bed and sing too!
Someone else mentioned (in another television board) that the Wachowskis' have this overall theme of "love win out" or "love will win through" (in a humanistic sense). Does anyone agree or disagree with this? I, personally, think it is a wonderful theme/message to send out there in the world.
So far liking the series especially the treatment of Naomi, well there was that super trigger inducing idea, that reminded me of how many people want to "fix" us even if it means destroying who we are.
I will say it reminds me of why I never got into heroes, half way through and most of the characters have no clue what is going in, this it's why I liked arrow no 10 seasons of secrets or slow reveals I get bored fast when people can't figure out what's going on.
I ended up marathon-ing the last few episodesI had left in queue.
Which is why I haven't posted in here. Lol.
Anyone else finish the series? I don' want to spoil anything for those that haven't yet.
But I really dug this whole show. The characters felt like real and honest people to me. And I would love for this to get picked up again.
Apparently there's a big announcement at Comic Con on Thursday. Fingers crossed, love this series.
Paige :)
I heard they have 5 seasons planned!!!!!
I also love the show. The whats going on part was just amazing!!!
I like the show, but by the time you get into whats going on, there's only a couple of episodes left. I'll get around to watching them one day. I'm trying to make it last. I can't wait until the next season.
I ended up binge watching this show and absolutely loved it. It had that Wachowski look and feel to it, which I like. Glad to hear there might be upcoming seasons!
I just watched the second episode and the hospital scene with Nomi and her mom was extremely overwhelming to me. I guess that was my first "Triggering" experience. :-( I felt like a cornered animal. I couldn't get away and I was impotent to stop it.
Is that Geena Rocero dancing in the introduction?

So I guess yesterday at Comic Con executive producer J. Michael Straczynski said we'll know within 2 weeks if NetFlix will renew the series.
Paige :)
It has been a really popular show so far. Netflix knows this since they have all the data on who watches what and how many people watch it.
it actually did much better then people expected it too.
also the writer J. Michael Straczynski said that he already has a five season plan. So cross ur fingers.

5 Seasons????
Excuse me while I pick up my jaw from the floor. Lol.
But I think that would make a lot of sense (pun intended) because as great as this first season is I don't think we have a good idea of what's going on with the bad guys and their plans.
Loved the series! Finished it on Sunday and can't wait for next. Thought I had an understanding of how the characters were developing, but then again.......
i have and plan on suggesting this to several people, though with trans folk and others who i feel may have the same reaction I did I have warned them about the triggerific nature of the second episode. It was done well but still horrifying.

Yes, I would really like to hear Lana Wachowski's view on that episode. In many ways it's a horror story written especially for us. It definitely draws from transgender treatment history. I doubt most cis-people would get that.
Paige :)
So Sense8 was renewed for a second season this weekend which I'm really happy about, loved the first. :)
Yay!
I started watching last night and was immediately hooked and intrigued. I saw the first two episodes before I had to switch over for The Strain but tonight will be binge watching central.

Excellent. :)
Watched it, finished it, LOVE IT.
-2nd episode/ The hospital in the beginning for Jamie's Character was triggering.
-Got emotionally invested in every episode
-Balled at the end of episode 10, Beautiful
-Could have done without the Big bad this season
-felt the ending was anticlimactic
-MARTHA FROM DOCTOR WHO
-All the characters were very interesting and diverse.
-One of the best character's ark was the actor's
-Wonderful locations
-Middle of episode six ;)

It's not identity fracture. They all maintain their separate selves but they can share skills and speak to one another mind to mind.
