Is there any link between hormones and oily hair?
I see pregnant women all day, and quite often their hair is this beautiful thick and shiny hair.
During pregnancy I know that estrogen and progesterone levels are sky high... is that what causes it?
I had real bad oily hair before HRT. Now my hair is to dry almost like straw.
I have to add oil to my hair (spray) because it is so dry.
I use garner fructis anti frizz serum now because my hair is so dry
The only difference in my hair so far is that dandruff is GONE. Every morning I take a shower and whenever I drove to work the dandruff would be flying all over the place. I tried several things to help get rid of it but I always had it since it started sometime in high school.
This is my 2nd week on Premarin. I have no more dandruff. A surprising change I am very happy about.

I had oily hair prior to transitioning. Nowadays, cis women friends of mine comment on how much drier my hair is than theirs. Good thing too because it poofs up pretty hardcore lol.
I had oily hair too, had to wash it daily but now I can easily go two days and sometimes 2.5-3 days if one is a weekend day. little dandruff too - all the little changes are nuts!

Androgens (i.e. testosterone and DHT) increase sebum (oil) production in skin, progesterone as well but to a lesser degree whereas estrogen DECREASES sebum production. Progesterone helps to counter dry hair/skin and sometimes brittle nails (caused by not enough oil in skin) caused by estrogen AND the loss/reduction in androgen. During pregnancy, progesterone is high and estrogen as well. They balance each other out. Pre-menopausal ciswomen also typicall have more androgen than us, so more oil.
The addition of progesterone has really helped with my skin/hair dryness. My nails are quite strong. I find estrogen taken orally also inhibited androgen production more than when taken non-orally because orally, SHBG is increased by estrogen to a greater extent and it binds (inactivates) androgens very strongly. On oral E, my skin gets WAYYY too dry, even with progesterone. Not so with injections.
