Title: Swede want to make friends! (Espec if you too are from Scandinavia!)
Post by: RebeckaJensen on June 12, 2015, 09:18:33 AM
Hi Im Rebecka and I live in the south of Sweden!

I was thinking if there was anyone else here from Scandinavia? The reason I'm asking is that since Im very new here I would like to make some new friends :)
But, also because many of the discussions here has the situation for TG people in the US as their base, and it would be nice to talk to someone who comes from scandinavia and hear what they think about our situation here and so on. :)

OFC I really wanna make friends from the rest of the world as well!! :)

(sorry for any misspellings, my boyfriend is distracting me with terrible singing...)

Hi Rebecka, welcome to Susan's. As V M said I believe some people from Scandinavia are on here. No worries on the spellings. Even those of us who speak and write English as their primary language misspell words. I look forward to seeing you around the forums. Good luck and Hugs.

Hey there, Rebecka.
I'm Finnish. That counts, right?
Anyway, just call me Freya. I know, my name of choice sounds more like Iceland than Finland. But it fits me way better than most other options I had.
I've seen some other Scandinavians around. A few Swedes, another Finn and a Norwegian.
And, well, new friends, that's always good. I'm kinda looking for friends, too. Too bad I suck at Swedish....
See you around, I hope.

Finland is perfect! :) I have some cis-gender friends from Finland that I hang out with a lot, so I have a very positive view of finish people, but not so much of Finland :) But how is it to live as non-cis in Finland?
Freya is a very nice name, and if it sounds Icelandic I would only se that as a bonus since most things Icelandic just tends to sound very beautiful :)
Yeah I wonder where all these scandinavians are but I guess I will run into them eventually.
See you! :)

So you're asking me how life is in Finland as non-cis. Prepare for a long read.
Well....our trans-related laws are quite weird at some parts, and clearly not even designed with our comfort in mind. And, from what I've gathered from some people who know our politicians better than me, those laws are not going to get improved anytime soon. Yeah, sure, the guys at the top of the pile look OK at the first glance, but they're all conservative and somewhat religious. Plus, they're mostly rich "merchant-caste" people, who are almost certain to reduce taxes on themselves at the cost of overall higher taxes for everyone else. And we have an economic crisis going on, to boot. Go team Politics.
Then, there's those guys east of us. I'm actually starting to get a little bit worried about their warmongering.
I'm MtF, but I'm also about the age to get conscripted.
Technically, every male Finnish citizen goes through army training, and I'll have to get my transition up to speed if I am to convince them that I'm actually a woman. It will end up in a bureaucratic paperwork vortex, as far as I see. But at least I won't end up marching for days through forests in heavy combat gear. No soldier's life for me.
The people here.....well, everyone I've told has been supportive and kind.
Emphasis on "everyone I've told". I've met a lot of people who would insult me, or even hit me straight away, if they knew. I'm not that much of a stereotypical Finn, but I plan on carrying my knife with me when trying to pass. Just in case. I know that Finland, and other Scandinavian countries are quite safe, but it's better to be wary than dead. I am, if that did not clear it up, very, very much afraid of some bigot deciding to cut my throat when he realizes that I'm physically still male.
And, well, I really don't have that much connections to people. Aside the folks from school, and my brothers-in-harms in the Scouts. Most of the gang (we're more like a gang of crazy people than a Scout troop) are my long-time friends, and I can't even imagine any of them going against me if I told them. That's how close we are. Some of the new guys are quite worrying, though.
As for transition, I'm getting there with the psychologists. I have a ton of make-up and other cosmetics stuff, women's clothes (no skirts or dresses, however :'( ) and somewhat long hair. Haven't begun passing yet, but I will before the summer ends.
This little "Trans-life in Finland" story has gone on for ages. Hope it was not a boring read ::) Well, you asked for it.
-Freya.
BTWPS, I have just seriously been writing this single damned comment for hours. It's almost midnight! Curse you, perfectionism! I now need a good long sleep. God natt, or however it is said in Swedish....

Actualy, I don't think it sounds that much different from many parts of Sweden.. I grew up in the rural south, which is the part of Sweden with the highest amount of fascists: It is litterally a nazi stronghold. But this is just out on the country side in some places, the rest of Sweden is not THAT bad (even tho it's way worse then most people think since so many seem to think we're way further then we are).
I can understand the fear about the what is going on in the surrounding countries and the consequences it might get on your life, Im worried too and I don't even live as close as you do! But I think it's good that you seem to have a plan on what needs to be done, so stick with that!
In my family we've already decided (yes, this has been a serious talk with the whole family) that IF the war comes I will go to Canada since I will probobly be captured instantly.. they're not very fund of LGBTQ people, and even less with open feminist activists so I kinda consider myself screwd. Way better to run before the ->-bleeped-<- is all over you :)
You said you had contact with psychologists, and you already have makeup, long hair and some clothing. Have you started on hormones yet? I spend every day trying to imagine how I will look once I get started on them.. have probobly thought about it so much now that I will be dead dissapointed when I actually try it, haha!
You talked about your group of friends and that ur worried about some new guys. Can't you just tell the once you trust and tell them you don't want the new guys to know?
Would like to take just as long time answering you as you did for me, but my boyfriend is home and we are having a movie night.
Take care Freya, sending fiercness your way! :)

Yeah, I just started the proper stuff with the psychologists. It'll be close to a year before I get hormones, but I'm still young, I can wait. For now....
I've had a few opportunities to tell my old friends about my condition. They're not a close-minded lot, and I've played around a little bit with the idea, but those damned new guys keep bursting in. Expect for our sauna nights, and they are not the most comfortable environment for.....well, anything.
I'm kinda surprised that your family actually has an escape plan. I was thinking that Britain would be a better option. I really don't see the need to cross an ocean, the Brits are far enough and too tough for Comrade Grey-and-Black Rainbow to try anything.
On a lighter note, you actually have a boyfriend? And he knows, too?
Seriously, that is fantastic.
You'll probably read this tomorrow, so hope you two had picked some good movies.
Seriously, though, I keep writing this stuff for way too long. Better get some sleep tonight. God natt, Rebecka, and you take care as well.

Im pre-hormone and Im actually not even in contact with a psychologist yet (but I have a meeting on monday that hopefully will help me to get in touch with a team of gender-therapists and so on). I've reached 23, so it's not like my body is getting harder to change by the month as it is in the teens, so not in a huge rush, but don't want to wait forever... Im kinda afraid my beard will get worse. Dont have much now but afraid it will become more since that oftenly keeps developing far into your adult years. But it's good that ur taking ur time, one should not rush things... self-medication for example can turn out so bad if it goes wrong... thats why Im taking my sweet time as well :)
About ur friends: are there any social context/scene you guys hang out where it's just the old gang? cause that might be an idea? didn't understand what you wrote about the sauna thing, but I interperated it as the sauna not being a proper place for discussions like that.
Well, our plan is just in case, it's not like I have booked a ticet and so on... But the thing is, that if they will go beserk and start invading other countries (more then they have) we have to remember that the fascist movements are growing stronger all over europe, so fact is that they are not the only reason to leave. But, as I said, it's not like we've booked a ticet and looked into those things very much but we have had a discussion about it where my mother told me that if things gets to that she don't want me to stay and wait for things to get worse. And if I should leave I would want to go "far enough" to feel safe.. But I dont know, might go somewhere else but Canada seems pretty ok when it comes to politics (even tho my Canadian friends have told me that it was better like 15-20y back).
Yes, I have an amazing boyfriend, we've been a couple for two years and are determined to make that number higher into infinity haha! ;) Yeah, he knows, we've talked a lot about it. Thing is that he is not just my bf but one of my best friends (tho we were not friends before dating) so we kind of talk about everything. He's very supportive and just wants me to be happy. He's more about person then gender, although he does prefer men, but he's a bit fluid when it comes to these things.
The movie night went fine, we saw "The fault in our stars". I cried like a baby... very sweet lovestory (sucker for romantic dramas..).
Going to bed now, talk to you later!

Yeah, it's not like Im walking around scared, but I do believe one should be open for the fact that peace is not to be taken for granted and the situation between Sweden and Russia is not very good atm. But, as I said, it's not like people are walking around being scared, we just happend to have a discussion about this one day and decided that this is what we are going to do if it happens :)
Yeah, gonna celebrate midsummer with my boyfriend and some friends, gonna be nice, dinner and dancing :)

Yep, Laura is right. Even here people are not panicking, since nobody really believes that a war could begin anytime soon. However, people didn't believe on them attacking before, and that was just before the Winter War started.
The sauna part......well, it means exactly what I said, nothing ever goes well when we go to sauna. You don't want to know.
And yeah, midsummer is soon here. I'm going to be with my grandparents during the whole thing. My cousins are going to be there, too. Having fun with those two girls is always the best part of my summer.

I ain't a big fan of romantic movies, but "The Fault in our Stars" is a good one. Very sad, though. I cried a lot too when I saw it.
And speaking of movies, me and my father are going to cinema today, to watch "Jurassic World". I've been doing a lot of stuff like that with dad lately, it's some kind of father-daughter re-bonding thing since we were not on very good terms during the last few years. That's before I told him, now he goes a lot easier on me. Probably because he knows how depressing this can get at times.
BTW, is it just me, or is this slowly becoming our official chat thread? :-\

Well, whatever happens happens and I think people just shouldn't take peace for granted. Yes, people are sick of war, but not all politicans are, and even tho I believe and hope that nothing is probobly gonna happend I think it's good to be open for the fact that this MAY happend. Waaww, all this just sounds so dramatic, I can promise that it is not.
That sounds so lovely! Im hopefully after midsummer gonna go meet my niece, she's a soon to be three year old little diva with a huge personality. Absolutly adorable! :)
Aaah, I love romance, and (dont know the exakt word in english so here comes some swedish) 'Kostymdrama'. So anything with drama, love and tight corsettes :)
It's really great that he is trying to mend and improve ur relationship, and that he seems to understand that things are not that easy for you.
Hahaha, yeah a little bit, but when u've reached 15 posts (think u got 2 left) we can just start sending PM's instead... can't do that until 15 posts, so I'm thinking that 'nöden har ingen lag' :)

I'm back from the movies. A damn good ride.
Awesome visuals, decent plot, lot of references to the earlier films, music as good as always, absolutely badass final battle. Also maintains proper Jurassic Park feel during the whole movie. What's not to love?
Well, the characters could have been better. But the dinosaurs are the main point of the film anyway.
And dad, well, we're getting along really good. Laughed at some stupid radio commercials on the road there, discussed Velociraptors and how they actually looked like on the way home.
We still have some strain when it comes to talking about me being a trans woman, but he's OK with it, and I'm pretty sure he has looked the basic things up from internet. So no worries on him. Now I just have to deal with people like cousins, their parents, my grandparents, friends, my stupid step-mother, my step-father and his son, and my five-year old little brother, if I want to keep in contact with them. So no pressure whatsoever.
Also, 15 posts. Now we can talk elsewhere. Yay. :D

I've never been a fan of those kinds of movies, even tho I can understand why some of them have an appeal to people when I see something that even I can recognize as good :)
Well, the fact that he's good with it is the most important, that meens that you'll probably be able to work out whatever obstacles that may arise when you face them since the will to maintain a good relationship between the two of you is there!
Are the rest of your family/relatives people that might have a problem with this? And is there a chance they will have an ongoing problem with it and not get over it? The thing is that even tho many people might react strongly in the beginning, they usually come around.. And if they don't, well, then they are bad people cause family is suposed to love each other no matter what and stick buy your side when the going gets rough. If they can't understand that and can't see that you are stil the person they've all loved then they are the ones who has a problem acting like biggots, and not you (but I guess you already know that).
BUT: it will probably work it self out, even tho some people (for some stupid reason I can't really understand) needs quite some time before they get there.
Yaaaayy, in that case, send the answer of this post in a private message and we'll talk there! :D
I just got back home from my bf, he lives in Gothenburg and I live in Lund (university town far south) so enjoying having a bed all by myself. I love him and all, but I do love having the bed to myself :3
Talk to you later Freya!

Hej Rebecka!

I'm from Uppsala, but for the most part I was raised in Uruguay. Next year I'm moving back to Sweden, though, most likely to the vicinity of Örebro. I also have family in Göteborg!

Ingenting, jag vet bara inte hur det låter, jag har jätte dålig koll på amerikanska dialekter :) Har dock hört att Chicago är en fantastisk stad, so I bet the dialect is just as awsome :)

Vad kul att höra! Jag pluggar också en sommarkurs just nu (jobbar dock samtidigt, så missade den enda närvaroveckan, fuuuuck). Vad pluggar du i sommar för något? Univ. eller folkhögskola? :)

Oooh, lovely! I've actually never been to Upsala (I know, it's a big shame haha!), but my boyfriend lives i Göteborg so I go there all the time! :) It's a really lovely city, with all the canals and the wagons (correct word? I dont know..).
I was in Örebro as a child so I don't remember much of it, but I've heard it's a good city to live in :)

I've been away from here for a couple of weeks and now all of a sudden there's a lot of Swedes here, YAAYY! :P It's just nice to be able to talk to someone who comes from the same country and going through the same system (healthcare, transition, norms and so on).
But anyways, nice to meet you too! Where in Sweden are you from? North, south or middel? (I'm a true southern gal haha).

I don't think I've ever been to Göteborg yet, but I will have to go and visit now.

How did your meeting with the doctor go? What type of timeline did they establish?

I plan on carrying my knife with me when trying to pass. Just in case. I know that Finland, and other Scandinavian countries are quite safe, but it's better to be wary than dead. I am, if that did not clear it up, very, very much afraid of some bigot deciding to cut my throat when he realizes that I'm physically still male.

You're not the only one. I live in Stockholm, so that would be the trans friendliest city in one of the trans friendliest countries in the world, but I'm still scared. I don't think I will ever understand this hatred towards us.

Yeah, I'm trying to get to know some trans people in Sweden in order to get a better idea of what I would expect if I go through with transition. So your post is useful for me too. :)

I'm from Stockholm. The city that is loathed by the rest of the country. :D

In my family we've already decided (yes, this has been a serious talk with the whole family) that IF the war comes I will go to Canada since I will probobly be captured instantly..

Wow, you really thought that through. I dunno, Putin is scary, but I still feel that an invasion out of the blue seems rather unlikely. Never hurts to be prepared, though. Maybe I'm just lulled into a false feeling of safety since I've never experienced war.
