Just curious as I am getting really anxious to wear something I like. I work a lot a and I am always home. So I don't really wear anything but work clothes and my sleep wear. It's only been 5 months since I started transitioning (well sort of), but I haven't really paid much mind to clothing til now.
I have really really bad foot problems so I am avoiding all women footwear for now (until I get better). Although, I really only like ballet flats :/ as far as footwear goes. CURSE YOU FEEETTT!
What kind of clothing do people usually start when buying new stuff. When I hit 3 months of HRT I really do plan to buy something but I am really sure what looks okay at that point... :( so far HRT hasn't change much beside my legs..
My mum bought me a few things the day after coming out, but it was only a few weeks for me before shopping went from boy stuff to girl stuff.
I'm talking basics, jeans, tees, jumpers, over the next few months that built my wardrobe to the point where I had more female clothes than male.
Hugs I started with hoodies blouses legging and OMG I love ballet flats.i just donated all my male clothes to charity lol no going back now
How many op shops over the years have made a huge profit from the trans community? lol

I had a similar event with my mom.. She donated almost 75% of my wardrobe since she loved to buy me polos and manliest clothing she could think of... So glad she donated as I never wore any of them. At least someone will find use of them. I didn't get any new clothing though.. X( I actually have 5 shirts outside of my work and pajama shirts. 2 jeans, 1 short (Which I want to donate now), and 5 gym shorts from high school (I actually like gym shorts and they are really short on me)
Oh and thanks for naming blouses... I totally forgot about them >< I guess I'll start of with blouses and tees as it wouldn't be a bad idea.. time to google leggings..
>w< I wish I had the money to buy all the ballet flats I want honestly..
I'm attempting to build a wardrobe, but since I don't present as female in public yet, it's mostly been through online shopping. Haven't had a whole ton of luck yet though since it's been hard to guess what size in what brand I would be. It seems the majority of the time I buy based on their measurements the clothes end up too big or too small.
Once I'm out and starting to publicly present as female, I'm hoping to have more than a few outfits to wear. I'm more running into the issue of not knowing where to start.

That's actually what I've been trying to shop for too. I work in an office setting, so once I'm presenting as female, some modest dresses shouldn't be all too extreme. I'm not a fan of jeans, so I've been leaning more toward skirts/dresses as my main focus right now.
It's funny how I get frustrated when Amazon sends me a daily email and it's about men's clothing. I never look into those ones and I've never bought men's clothing from them, but I occasionally get emails about dresses and shoes that I check into.
I started about the same time I started HRT. I think at first it was a bunch of panties, so I could at least have something feminine on without it being noticeable. Then I think I got cute jammie pants to wear around the house. Maybe two months in I started going shopping with my mom since I was still uncomfortable in the women's section alone, and I got some jeans. Got a small simple purse with skulls on it around that time and started carrying it with me regularly. Three months in I sometimes went out a bit mixed, like women's jeans and a guy shirt plus my purse. Didn't want to draw too much attention to myself. But this was the point of male-fail as I was getting ma'am'd and wasn't really trying to pass. Once I reached that point, I got more female clothes. Some rather blatantly female stuff. Got my eyebrows done and I was passable except for my voice. Got some high-heels and stuff like that too. I tried taking it slow but it all happened pretty quick. So about three months in I had enough clothes for a week. And then I ordered or bought quite a lot more clothes, especially because I was going on a trip. 4.5 months in, I went full-time and had enough clothes for a week and a half to two weeks, and over time I've just added from there.
Well I don't really intend to go out with any clothing until I am at least somewhat passable.. My body shivers just from the idea of it.. :S By then I think dresses would be fine no?
I get that same feeling too.. I am not really excited to wear jeans. Dresses on the other hand gets my full attention. I wish amazon's prices weren't so high otherwise I would love to shop on amazon.. as I trust them 100% and never gotten a problem with them
I been out but no one confirms anything no mam no sir but then again I don't go out on my own

The main reason I shop on Amazon right now is their return policy. I pretty much exclusively order things that have their free return policy since I currently have a hard time finding a style I like that fits how I want it to. It's fantastic because I can usually just ship it back in the same package they sent it in if it doesn't fit. The way I look at it is if I had to pay for even return shipping on my purchases (much less a restock fee or only partial refund), I'd probably be out twice the value of the items I've kept from my Amazon clothes purchases.
Oh, and Ashley, I pretty much forgot about panties. I can't even remember the last time I wore men's underwear since that was something I could switch to feel more feminine without anyone ever being able to notice. Victoria's Secret's "Panty Party" sales were my best friend while building that part of my wardrobe. After shipping, it usually turned out to be less than like $35 for 7 pairs with a bunch of different styles to pick from.

Heh, well.. took some getting used to, but one day I realized it was no big deal and that I was shopping alone without being paranoid. And don't worry much about height. I've seen some taaaall women out there and they own it. I actually shrunk from HRT. Went from 5' 11" to 5' 8" so now I feel okay wearing 5" heels. It's nice to be able to strut along towering over everyone but then go back to a more modest height by taking them off. Plus, if people see tall heels on you, it doesn't really matter what height you start at, they'll just assume you're tall because of them.

I'm sure they do, but do department stores like K-Mart where you're from have self service check outs?
I think they were invited for the trans community
As soon as I started HRT all my male clothing went to the local op shop. It was a case of ready or not here I come because I was so totally fed up with living a lie. Apart from underwear and leggings/stockings I tend to buy all of my clothing second hand and op shops have been a good friend to me over the years. If you have a good eye you can pick up some really good quality garments at a tiny fraction of the new price. And of course whenever I decide to prune my wardrobe all the prunings go back to the op shop so everybody wins.
With shoes I stick with flats because they're practical. Now that it's Winter here I'm wearing boots and my current pair cost me all of $NZ8.00 second hand. They're nice leather boots too. When I was still working as a social worker I spent a lot of my day on my feet so good practical shoes that were comfortable to wear all day were the rule. Back then I used to check out sales and if I found a suitable pair of marked down shoes I would buy two or three pairs in that style at the same time which worked out really well over the time I was working at the clinic. I burned up a lot of shoe leather going up and down those corridors all day!
I'll be completely honest though and say that the first time I went clothes shopping for myself I was very nervous, but I found that wore off quickly and it became a totally normal event in my life. The secret I found was to own being out shopping and it wasn't too long before I was just another ordinary woman in the store buying clothing for herself. Rarely I struck other people who would pass off comments. If they're store staff don't be afraid to complain to management about it. This past month some staff at a big chain store here in New Zealand were rude to a transwoman customer and store management took her complaint very seriously indeed and took immediate steps to rectify the problem.
On the day I finally threw every last of scrap of John's life in a big bin.

ASOS has a return policy as well and can be pretty reasonable (and really cute too, although sometimes it skews too young for this mare :P ) The return label is pre-paid and is an easy sticker you can just toss on the same bag it came in. You might wanna try it out.
As for your question about leggings with the foot, those would be tights.

You look great in gingham
I've been slowly building my female wardrobe. Originally, I had no intention of doing so until I lost 100 lbs. Once I started getting a few things, I decided what the heck! I found Walmart to be a good place. They carry a good selection of plus sizes, customer service is terrible so no one bugs you, and they have self checkouts. I did go to Target yesterday, so I'm getting more brazen. [emoji4]
A couple of months ago, I went through my closet and donated about half my male clothes, only keeping ones I know I'll be wearing for now. I'm now starting to incorporate some female clothes into my wardrobe. Mostly t-shirts and undies. Socks and unisex shoes are next! I mean really, who looks at a man's shoes?
(I should've used that last one in the movie quote game.) [emoji13]

I can't carry on wearing male clothes.
I started shopping for female stuff a few weeks ago
I wear it out in public, even though I am otherwise male in appearance. this is the start of my transition I guess
I am not on HRT.
Well I jumped in with both feet really fast and started buying a couple days after I figured stuff out. Spent way too much money on Amazon and pretty much used it for everything. But a couple weeks later I said forget it and started just going out and shopping. Its more fun at least for me to go out and look at stuff and not just see it through a computer screen. Oh and self checkouts are perfect for me, since I'm still nervous about my voice even if everyone says I sound fine.
As for my old clothes right now I'm just waiting for a free donation pickup service to get them next week. And all I'm going to have left is my work clothes otherwise everything is female no going back for me. Only bad thing is I'm covered on summer clothes just have to start building winter soon.
I started shopping from the women's side once HRT changed my body so that they just fit better and are more comfortable. It's nice to have room for boobs and a little less room for the waist. Most people don't even notice, really. The way I dress hasn't really changed much.
Yeah, I'm pretty butch.
I started with the occasional skirt or dress with heels. Now I have a whole closet filled with jeans and t-shirts with only 3 dresses/skirts. I've also totally abandoned heels. I like my ankles the way they are.

ballet flats for the win 💖💖💖
I started slow and added things gradually. I now wear virtually any I wish to work provided I don't flash cheek or naughty bits. I'm a fan short skirts and heeled boots. I started collecting clothes well before HRT but went through a few purging cycles. I started gradually wearing stuff in public about 5 or 6 months into HRT.
What I learned pretty early on is that staff don't typically give a damn what you're buying. Just get what you want and don't sweat it. Tring on may make you more nervous bu checkout never should!
Reading all of this really makes me want to start as well. :3 Well at least at home for now..
Really wish my grandma would stop giving me killer stares whenever I wear my headbands or pigtails.. Makes it really uncomfortable to do anything I want when she looks away with a sad look as if I died or something.
I love the ASOS website by the way.. They don't really have any wide width shoes which makes me feel like I am just window shopping ^^".. at least for ballet flats since that pretty much what I've been browsing. The quality seems to be really good :o Explaining some of the prices.. Definitely better than amazon's selection but I have weird feet and they are wide too so it kind sucks I can't really buy anything from there :S

Yeah prices 😓
When I first started transitioning I couldn't wait to work on my wardrobe - Skirts, jeans, shorts - at least 3 of each - about 10 blouses - Of course I had been borderline depressive for a lot of years and my weight was almost 300 at that point - The diagnosis and starting hormones were God sends emotionally and after 16 months I've lost almost 90 lbs - The result being I am now into my 3rd or 4th wardrobe overhaul and sanity has set in - Couple of pair of jeans/shorts, a skirt and a few tops is all I will be buying for a while - Well I did buy this cute dress - Couldn't help myself - and the charity thrift stores have been the recipients of a lot of clothes
be well

Customers don't really care either. I observed last time that other customers avoid making eye contact at all costs. Although it could be that they felt uncomfortable about the lesbian couple or possibly couldn't tell if I was a guy or a girl. At any rate, people seemed to actively avoid looking at us while shopping.
Just a few months ago :D
I needed some new night/sleeping clothes, so I convinced myself to get women's pyjama pants, sweatshirts, and leggings. I'm pre-everything at the moment, and it's too soon for me to even consider wearing anything feminine out in public. But I love my jammies, especially the baby pink one. I'm thinking about getting some new underpants soon and start tucking on a regular basis, even while presenting as a man. Just to start getting used to it.

I actually shrunk from HRT. Went from 5' 11" to 5' 8" so now I feel okay wearing 5" heels.
Yowza, that's a heck of a change Ash. A 3" difference is not insignificant. I know HRT does many things, I didn't realize it also affects height. Apparently I've got more reading to do! I'm 5' 7" now, and don't want to get too much shorter :p
It was around October of last year when I really started to gear up for full time. Early this year I discovered my size for a wordrobe I would wear daily. In my previous life I wore shirts that were too big that look comical on me these days. Now I find medium and small size blouses and shirts look great on my frame. I had always worn medium skirts and now I find size 6 jeans/pants fit me perfect. Even now, I am purging the last of my old clothes I will never ever wear again in this lifetime.
Yeah, I pretty much did the damn thing overnight, as much as I could. I still remember that when I started out, all I had that was technically "female" clothing, was a black A-skirt and leggings. So I kind of just wore that as much as I could with sweatshirts. And then from there I did what I've seen most people on this thread have done, bought basics (tees, jeans, more leggings). I basically just worked from there and fleshed out what I could. I'm kind of in a minimalist state right now because I'm moving to another state at the end of the month, but once I'm settled there, I will start building out my wardrobe! I'm also nearly 3 months into HRT, so as things progress there, I'll likely start experimenting with new styles!
