A transgender woman claims she was verbally and physically abused by a group of kids while riding a D.C. Circulator bus. She said things went from bad to worse because the bus driver didn't help.
Bus drivers who do nothing while one passenger abuses another are sadly quite common. I suppose he was more afraid of throwing the kids off since he's probably seen them before and knew he'd see them on his bus again at some point, which would be quite scary. And it's difficult dealing with a pack of young people like that, whether you say something or not it is still likely to escalate the situation. I bet that had any of them been alone then they would have said and done nothing, it's that gutless pack mentality at work where they feel they can get away with some nasty stuff when they're in a group.

According to the article, the bus driver told the
woman to get off the bus because she was getting harassed. >:(
In my mind, that's significantly worse than doing nothing. In the best case, that's punishing the victim for being harassed. In the worst, the hoodlums follow her off the bus, out of view of any witnesses...
Good transit policy is silently calling the cops when there's a disturbance. Bus drivers shouldn't have to put themselves in harm's way.
