====================
Amazing speech. I admire her so much.
Some favorite lines:
"With attention comes responsibility."
"If you want to call me names, make jokes, doubt my intentions, go ahead. Because the reality is, I can take it. But for the thousands of kids out there coming to terms with being true to who they are, they shouldn't have to take it."
I love that last line you quoted there.
Me too Suzi, I saw a snippit on a local news show here... What I saw of the speech was very well delivered

Haven't heard the speech(computer at work has no speakers) but from reading what she said I think she's going to be an asset to our community and cause for recognition and equality.
Wow, she killed that! Thanks for posting this, Suzi.
Hugs, Devlyn
I admit to wiping my eyes about 2/3 of the way through her speech. I thought it was awesome and she seems to be growing more and more into a very visible asset to our community. Her speech helped with that.
I recorded it and I am just watching it now. I got teary eyed during the intro and didn't stop. Thank you Caitlyn for speaking out and bringing awareness to the rest of the world about our community.
Wow, Caitlyn is amazing. I also was moved to tears throughout her speech. Watching her, being so strong and beautiful and giving such a passionate speech, really is truly inspiring.
I can normally hold back the tears, while watching this video the floodgates opened, she is so courageous she is going to wonderful advocate for the trans community.

I have a lot of respect for her.
I'm not ashamed to admit it.......I cried while listening.
I thought she presented a wonderful speech, and addressed the naysayers in a polite non-combative way to make it not so much about her but about thousands of transgender youth that need support, and understanding.
Wonderful job Caitlyn..........Thank you!!
Wonderful job!
I hadn't watched it tell a few minutes ago, but it brought me to tears when I did. She did a wonderful job with her speech.

Elegant, eloquent, and inspiring!
I was crying and clapping by the end. Best thing I could come home from a rough day at work to. I love, love, LOVE her!
Good on her for doing so well in such a high pressure unconventional setting. I suspect her Olympic character and strength was shining through.
I had heard of her award nomination and was hopeful to watch it live, to my dis may I missed the broadcast. It was disappointing , some one at work this morning had disparaging remarks about her. I was somewhat surprised at the comments, but could not think of any thing to say in support or to add, that those comments are not welcome by most in this day and age. Since thinking a little more, I can have a response should a like situation arise.
Caitlyn, was amazing, like others I was brought to tears. I think she could be best suited as a public speaker on our behalf. Not in some commercial reality show designed for shock and ratings. Thank you Caitlyn Jenner
Thanks, Caitlyn. The Arthur Ashe Courage Award. It is appropriate. I remember Arthur Ashe when he was a tennis champ. He broke the color barrier in the white world of tennis. It takes courage to be trans as it is.

So I think when I first heard about this I thought it was just tabloid B.S. that portrayed her in an unflattering manner, and was worth completely ignoring. Then there was more evidence for her transition, but i wasn't really on comfortable with her being associated with our community, because I thought it was made for t.v. Kardashian drama. In her first interview, I thought she was honest, and in her ESPY appearance, she said something really important apart from the feelings of her own life, I am glad she spoke up for transgender people who are afraid.
I will be really good to have her in the spot light
That brought a tear to my eye. I was in hospital having srs when she was on the news non stop and honestly didn't know what to think. I chose not to watch the coming out interview till after I was discharged in case it was too emotional for me. It is without doubt after watching this she is an asset to our community.
Nicely done Caitlyn.

Yeah. It's a bit absurd.
When I watched the video of her speaking. The first thing that I thought was: "Wow. Her voice really sucks."
I just don't get the logic behind forking over mountains of cash for GRS, FFS simply because you have it. But, you make zero effort to work on your voice and then you whine and cry when people clock you.
It takes a lot of time & effort. People just want the quick fix.
There. I stated my opinion. I did NOT say this to piss anyone off. I've held this belief since day one. Probably said it before on here at one time or another.
It's the cold, hard truth.

A lot of people either choose not to or are unable to speak femininely, not something I understand personally but I respect peoples choice to do so and feel for those that are unable to accomplish a feminine voice.

If you make the choice not to do it. You are just sabotaging your own transition out of pure laziness.
Sorry. I won't give them any sympathy there.
The idea that "some are unable to do it" is a lame excuse and nothing more. Again, people don't want to put in the time and effort. It took me three years to get even close to having a passable voice.
When I was in the Jr High boys choir. I was a baritone. Our teacher told me that I could even be used as a bass vocalist if need be.
So, I don't buy that excuse of "Oh, I can't do it."
No. You CHOOSE to not put in any effort or you give up after two months because it's too hard. Go cry me a river.
Our comunity should not sit and micro-criticize one who has chosen to be a poster girl for the better of trans people. Most of the population know that she used to be a dude and get that the voice is really not that big of a deal. Would we be happier if she talked campy and she sounded phoney? May be the voice will come in time. Some of us t girls have male physical features that cannot be changed. Does that make us any less trans? Iam disapointed that from all the positive to come from the presentation of her espy speech, some can only find the negative in it all. Caitlyn unfortunately lived in a spotlight so her coming out was in the spotlight. Im really sure that other than have her every move plastered on the tabloids, not one of us would refuse to use the cash resources to pay for their feminization.
To me the strength was her chosen word, the struggles of trans people and how we all can work to make this a better world. Of course these are my opinions as are the previous opinions of others which we all have a right to , but we should not look a gift horse in the mouth
What do you do when no matter how strong of an effort, you can not feminize your voice?

Why are you expecting someone that's been transitioning for 3 months to do what took you 3 years.

My point has been this: Someone attempts to do something, such as feminizing their voice, and then after a few months, they want to throw in the towel. I've seen this here over and over. They don't want to put in the time and effort. They expect it to be done in a time frame of several weeks.
This is absolutely ridiculous. It can't be done. Anyone who thinks that it can is lying to themselves.
And that is part of the problem with transitioning for some people. They convince themselves that certain things can and WILL be done on a specific timetable. Sorry, but life doesn't always work that way.

my 2 cents would be if I had 2 cents is that if transgender people very simply embraced who they are the voice issue would be totally non existent. Also , I watched the whole speech and at first I said good for you be yourself then by the end of the speech any awareness of her voice being different from any other woman was non existent. Her looks and what she was saying totally annihilated any relevance to her voice.
I loved her words, her appearance, her support for our community. Amazing speech.

Please, people, this isn't about her voice. It's about her words.

This! I admit being a little irked in the first minute due to my own internalized transphobia, but her words were so powerful her voice became irrelevant, and I mean that in a good way.
Personally, I transitioned to feel more at ease and reduce my social anxiety, and worrying about a passable voice would just have given me something else to be anxious about instead. Can I do it? Yes, but it's at the upper limit of my range, so I sound monotonous and phoney, and long-term strain will damage my vocal cords. I've been practicing at home and I have the resonance down, so I'll fix the pitch problem at Yeson.
Transition is also a continuous process, and Jenner might not be done yet. It seems to me that she's trying, because her voice doesn't sound the same as it did in the 80's, but perhaps she just can't due to age or other physiological constraints. Judging her for her voice is no different than judging anyone else for bone structure, hair loss, or body type.
Okay well you dont need a specific time to get your voice right, I had no problems for example and almost didnt work on it, so it depends on the person there is no specific time frame. That being said, I didnt even care about the voice, the words were amazing, she looked stunning, everything was perfect. Who cares about her voice, maybe she's training but she decided to keep using the male range until she knows she can keep her female range for a long time, or until she's confident enough, you don't know that, don't call someone lazy and make assumption about stuff you dont know. I don't mean to sound mean or rude, but I've read so many negative comments from cis people that getting this attitude from trans people too it's just too much.
Yes what she said !! (Serena) and Devlyn Marie
Does anyone here think that Caitlyn didn't deserve the award? I am somewhat conflicted with my opinion.

Its not our place to judge that. The people who did have the right to do so apparently thought she did deserve it and awarded it to her.

Let's keep this on topic please. Caitlyn's voice is not the topic and also avoid the use of asterisks in place of naughty words. I'll open this again but if I get another report it will be perma-locked.
Thank you all.
i've got to say that was such a well executed speech and i'm sure that it has changed some of the doubters in to believers
