Title: "Ma'am"-ed over the phone
Post by: MugwortPsychonaut on July 21, 2015, 10:26:32 AM
More and more, I've been getting read as female. I'm totally thrilled about that! But I totally didn't expect this. I had to call a billing office for a medical bill. The lady on the phone called me "ma'am" when she asked for my name. I gave her my male name, and she asked who she was speaking with. I told her it was me, and she still called me ma'am!  ;D

That is a real kick, isn't it. I thought I was over that years ago but on the ten hour trip back from my voice surgery I was reduced to a pad of paper and a pen for communication. I wasn't looking for it but I noticed I was getting gendered female all the time where as in the past they would leave it blank.

I think I've been lucky in that I've always been "Ma'amed" on the phone, but they usually switch to Sir after I give them my birthname, but one time, they switched to sir, then went back to ma'am a few moments later.

This always happens to me. I have always been soft spoken for a guy. When it is bad is when I am trying to get something worked out and I'm not taken serious. I have to lower my voice and talk louder to get them to fix my bill...lol. But other than that I like being called ma'am.
