So, I really like to sing, and over the course of my life, I've been able to learn to sing pretty well (not to toot my own horn or anything.) I enjoy my singing voice, but my voice is not masculine at all and I could never pass with it.
Would I be able to learn to sing again when I get on T? Are there any FTM singers that can provide insight? I'm not as worried about hitting high notes, as I sing in the alto range anyway, but I'd like to know if my voice will be able to adapt to singing again.
I am not a singer but I can tell you there are a lot of FTMs who do continue to sing. If you go on google and search for FTM singers the first link that should pop up is to transguys.com. It shows a few videos of different FTM singers and also explains what T does to the larynx. Hope this helps :)
It would be nice if there was an easy answer to this one but there isn't. I came by T naturally and my father thought I had a singing voice when I was very young but after puberty I ended up deep Bass. My lowest usable note was about an E2 and my Falsetto topped out at around A3. I think this voice came from my mothers father because my fathers voice wasn't that low. Few males have voices this low or bad so the risk is low but it exist. I am large at 6'2" and that also means everything is larger including my larynx aiding in the lower voice. Having a genetic link to a lower voice bumped the odds way up for me.
It comes down to what is really important to you and only you can decide if the risk is worth it.
go to youtube and search for the music of Heather Alexander, and Alexander James Adams. They spent 25 years as a folk singer before transisioning in 2008 and continuing, and they sound great before and after.
For a cool fact he recorded parts of songs he had not yet finished before starting T so that he has some songs that are duet's sung with himself.
