Title: Blue Cross Blue Shield
Post by: StartingOver on August 04, 2015, 04:10:40 PM
Does anyone know which surgeons are currently working with Blue Cross Blue Shield and getting preauthorizations for surgery approved?  I know Bowers does (or I think she does), but are there any others who are as well-versed in slicing through the insurance company red tape as they are at slicing through penis-shaped things?

Thx!

Hi StartingOver,

I also have BCBS.  For BCBS of MA they have a find a doctor feature on their website.  Once you log in to your member account you can then search using the SRS surgeon's name to see if they are covered by your plan.

Hope this helps!

as a fellow Bostonian, Who is thinking about switching to BCBS, Do they cover a lot for us in terms of surgery?

The only two I know of are Bowers and Kuzon (University of Michigan).  I called BCBS a couple months ago and asked about maybe 12 surgeons in the US and Brassard in CA. These are the only two that participated.

Hi Tinkerbell,

BCBS of MA covers most if not all of SRS.   Google "189 Transgender Services prn-3.pdf" to get the most up to date policy.

I called them to review the coverage  in my plan to be sure during health care enrollment at my company.  I would suggest that you do the same before switching.

Hope this helps.

Sadly BCBS Federal doesn't cover so I went to Aetna when the VA offered them this year and I've been less than impressed overall. If BCBS Federal follows the new guidelines and drops the exclusion like they're supposed to next year then I'm going back to them.
