"Janis Walworth knows how hard it is for companies to adapt when an employee begins transitioning to a different gender.

The Bellingham, Wash. woman has helped guide numerous businesses through the changes they have to make when a transgender employee comes out. Walworth and her partner Michele Kammerer, who transitioned to female in 1991 as a Los Angeles firefighter, run the consulting group Gender Sanity.

The Oregonian/Oregonlive spoke with Walworth about how the workforce has changed for transgender people and what bosses should do. Her answers have been condensed."
