Yup! This morning, I am officially my new female name. :) I have filed changes with the SSA now, and the DMV will be next week. Have started aggressively updating as many records as I can, and jumping into full time very quickly. It's been a WILD day today. Exhausting, surreal, but good. Part of me keeps going "is this ACTUALLY HAPPENING?!", and I'm slightly believing I'm still dreaming when I know I am not. I cannot wait to get all this paperwork done now. :D It's so annoying.
That's awesome! Congratulations!
On the other hand, once you get the paperwork done, you're home free for the next steps, right?
It was a big step, wasn't it? Getting the name change is where you can finally start smacking people for calling you something that actually isn't your name anymore!
(You didn't hear that from me.)
Either way, congrats! You're not dreaming, thankfully.

Thanks! :) Haha, yup that's pretty much it. If anyone tries to call me by intercom at work with my wrong name, I will simply ignore it. :D That'll condition them pretty quick. :P

That's a good idea. Or be like, "Who's this (name) you're talking about?", if they come and get onto you.
That is wonderful news. Congrats. Hugs

So happy for you!!! I'm going to be dealing with the same thing in about three weeks as well.

Congratz! Mine was official last week. I know what you are going through. I started changing records as soon as I left the courtroom. Got my new SS card in the mail today. I am going to the DMV next week too. Have found that some banks won't allow one to change the name on your account with the certified court order, need a state issued ID as well. It's grueling, but kinda fun too, especially when done over the phone. Conversations kind of go like this: Hello Mr. (so & so) and then nearing the end of the call: It's been a pleasure serving you Ms. (so & so)! Just love it.
Congratulations! It is the big hurdle, and does feel so good to have the ID say your real name.
My debit card brought me the most joy because it's in use so much. Tomorrow is my 4th anniversary. I finally ordered checks with my name on them this week.
Congratulations!
I'm about to start down this path myself once I get a timeline figured out at work. I'm hoping to have my name change coincide with full time at work.
That has got to be a great feeling, I HATE using my bank card anymore right now since it's an automatic outing. ..... hopefully soon :-\
Congrats girl! Nothing feels better than making it official! Now when I take my wallet out of my purse all of my cards and ID's have my name on them and my license has that big beautiful F. It is such a reassuring reminder.
Mine was official at the end of May and I went to Social Security, which was across the street, that same day. It is a bit of a pain and it takes some time and effort but you can get everything changed pretty quickly. It took me about 3 months to get all of my bank, credit card, school, utilities and insurance records changed. Many did require a copy of a government issued ID card in addition to the court order. Since I also had my gender changed there was a little extra work involved in getting some records changed. I have converted almost everything to my new name and gender. My auto insurance renewal came the other day and had me now listed as a divorced female and my premium was lower by $15 a month. When I go into work now, my college and law school diplomas with my new name on them are there to greet me.
So while it takes a little bit of time to complete, it is so incredibly validating once it is done and everything is changed over. It is fun getting mail in your new name with the conformation that your record has been updated or you get your new credit card with your new name.
Enjoy your new name girl!
It's great to have done isn't it? I know what you mean about the paperwork, I've had my name legal for months and I still haven't switched everything, there's just so much! getting your new license doesn't change the registration, so that's another one I didn't count on, medical records, heck even my AAA emergency insurance! There's just so many little things. Good luck, and enjoy the ride ^_^
Wow! I didn't even consider the auto insurance angle. Will see if the name change is all that is need to request the lower female rate. Will probably need the gender change doc. before it will work, but will do whatever it takes. The savings could be worth a couple of hors. of electrolysis. ;)

It is! I prepared a spreadsheet of every account I have under the sun a few months ago so I could check off my progress as I go. It's gonna help me stay on track with how much I have to change. It's exhausting changing all these records, but will be awesome when it's all said and done. :)

I had some questions! Hope I'm not too inquisitive!
Well, I wanted to transition sometime after I get out of college. But, see, if I change my name on all my documents, can I change the gender, too? I'm from Texas, and I believe SRS is required to change your legal gender, but I don't want SRS as much as I want implants, if that makes sense. I still want hormones and the whole enchilada, but not SRS. Do you think I'll be able to? It's been a lifelong dream to transition, but I feel really frustrated because I might not be able to live how I actually want to, in this case.

Actually I am a licensed insurance agent and do so professionally. I can answer that yes your auto insurance in fact WILL go down when you change your gender marker. There are some off reasons why it will actually go up but that is beyond what I am willing to type out right now. A little something to look forward to lol! ;D
And yeah I have my court date to change my name next month and just can't wait for it.

Thank you! :)
The gender part can be a little tricky, depending on state to state. As I understand, the SSA has updated their procedures for gender marker change, so that all you require is a letter from a licensed physician stating you have gone under appropriate for gender dysphoria in order to change your gender in your SSN record. I ran into problems with this on Friday. I updated my name with the SSA, but the person that filed this for me still believed surgery was required, even though it is not explicitly required now according to their website.
The process for DLs are different state to state.
https://www.txdps.state.tx.us/DriverLicense/changes.htm
According to this, it sounds like a court order is necessary in Texas. But if you do some research, there may be ways to work around this, especially if you are able to get your record changed on your social security records. If you wish, I can give you some more info as I navigate the SSA part of this by PM. :) I live in CT, so the laws that affect me with gender and DL are markedly different.

Omg, that would be such a big help!!! If you can PM me I'd love that. I can also give you my email if you need it. ^^ I'm not sure if it's looked down upon, I just don't want SRS, but I do want my gender marker changed. It's frustrating that I'd be forced out of my comfort zone, but it'll be easier if the SSA doesn't need it.

I would love to know the reasons why it would go up. When I changed my gender marker a couple of months ago my rate went up about $2 every 6 months. It's really inconsequential but I was always under the impression it would go down.

Okay so now that I have a little time I will explain why in some cases it will go up when you change to female:
If you are under 25 you are considered a young driver, males in this case will almost always have higher premiums. Now when you hit 25 and beyond that is when it no longer factors your premium based off of gender in the same way as before. What I mean by this is in some zip codes and territories females are statistically the more dangerous drivers.
Your premium is rated not nationally but based off of where you live and how many accidents have occurred and who caused them, so while being a young driver is based nationally, everything past 25 is more local. Try and think about it like this, do you notice more females in accidents then men in your local area? If it is more expensive being female then statistically there have been higher claims and higher payouts and accidents based off of women.
Likewise if you moved to another state or surrounding zip code that could all just change drastically. So between 25-55 you are going to be grouped with all women's driving abilities at that age, then 55+ you enter into the senior age. But ultimately you will find that generally women are the safer drivers and drive the safer cars, but again the rates can change drastically by just a small thing.
As an insurance agent the best way I can advise people to get a quick discount is to check your mileage (especially if you live in California) most states dont notice or care if you say you drive 1000 miles less but actually dont, and that will save you a few dollars each month.

I must be one of the off reasons then because mine went up $10 or so per 6 months. (Progressive).
I think it's not a general rule as there are some FTMs reporting that theirs went down when they went female to male on their DL and insurance.

Thank you for the explanation, it makes perfect sense. So I can partly blame my soon to be ex-wife for my increased rate, she has had 3 accidents in the last few years. :D
so congrats and its nice to know my insurance may got down, last weekish I had to put my change in the local paper, now I am waiting for the court to get back to me after the 28th. I already have a note from my doctor for the social security office to change my gender marker, I am hoping things can go fast and I a can get a accurate license ASAP. the day I do I am buying myself one of those pink "its a girl" balloons :-)

Social Security Administration can get very frustrating despite being very easy. Frustrating because exactly as posted earlier - some of the agents do not know the regulations and may demand you jump through useless hoops or refuse to provide a verification letter at the end of your business.
SSA regulation 'RM 10212.200′ requires only one of four methods to change your sex at your SSA file
- Birth Certificate
- Passport
- Court order
- Doctor's letter
(I have that full regulation posted at my site: https://slimandme.wordpress.com/2015/07/31/another-sex-change-at-social-security/)
So, the easiest is the court order. When you petition the court for name change, include legal sex change. Bring a therapist and / or endocrinologist / or primary care letter. Court order has far more uses beyond SSA as others have posted here: bank accounts, utility accounts, insurance, loans, drivers licence.
SSA can get finicky with the medical letter. I had to have my endocrinologist do two letters to recently re-correct SSA errors at my file. AGH!
