Title: Newbie clothes advice
Post by: naa on August 28, 2015, 10:52:19 AM
Hi, I'm new to these forums

I'd never really cared about clothes in my entire life, till I started buying female clothing a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, I don't have a clue what I'm doing. Everything I've bought is very hit and miss. More miss than hit.

Does anyone have any advice about what I should be considering, or aiming for? I'm pretty much lost.

Hi,

what did you imagine wearing, when you tought about yourself being a girl?
Its always depends on what you like, if you want to dress like a Paris Hilton Barbie ... then buy that  ;D
if you dont care as boy, you dont HAVE TO start caring as a girl  ;)

No, definitely not Paris Hilton.

I'm not 100% sure what I imagined. Feminine without looking completely ridiculous would be nice. Long skirts and dresses I've liked the most so far.  But tops, I've had no luck finding anything I've not regretted buying.

Look at why you regret buying them, and with that in mind, look at avoiding that regret next time.

Eg, When I shop now, is when dysphoria ges is worst, because I have to take absences this body has nto account, and extra needs this body requires.

So Firstly I had to find out my Size. I got that down.
But even somthing in my size might not, cover my faulsies for example? I regret buying tops because they was in my size, and I still couldnt wear them. why? Oh yeah no coverage of my breast formes. so, Next top was like.

Do i like this? yes, Ok
Is it in my size? yes ok good
Now will it cover my lack of boobs yes. Ok ill get this.    still regret it? yes. WHY? Because t see through.

What can I do?
I can wear a bra in same colour, or make sure as best I can that my next purches wont be see through.

So I like this red top, what if its see though, do I have a red bra.
Rince and repeat the process.

Also my most important question. Does it look as good on me as the modell.

You have to cater for your body, And buy things that you learn look good on you, and not buy somthing becuse it looks good on the models advertising it.

Which means, you got to reside to the situation, that somtimes that dress looks absoloutly amazing, but you like I, somtimes wont be able to pull  off the look :)

My first female clothes were full length skirts with tank tops to match. Other than a few graphic tanks as well. Then I also worked in skinny jeans which are quite comfy. Which also complements all the unisex graphic tees that I have as well.

When you picture yourself for skirts, really you have to look at the whole ensemble, blouse/tank top/button downs/etc.. With possibly the inclusions of accessories as handbag/purse/jewelry.. It is a lot more work than what guys slap on whatever they do so please.

Note, picture a whole outfit rather than just picking this and that up, and that's how you should generally shop.

Just a thought; I realize you may be very self conscious since you are just starting out, but Nordstrom offers a Personal Stylist service at no charge, which could help you determine your best looks, and help you avoid the "hit and miss" experiences you are having.

whatever you do follow the size guide, clothes to small will make you look massive, im a size 8 and i have some size 6 clothes that make me look like a beast

search outfit ideas on google images, i have done so with searches like "summer skirt and blouse" or "dress and blazer casual", it will give you and idea of what ensemble you are looking for

use color to augment visual size of body, black tops make upper body look smaller when paired with light colored bottoms,
also solid color detracts visual attention while patterns and jewelry attracts visual attention

you have to commit to fashion like anything else if you want to be good at it ;p
hope that helped

For me the first couple times it was hit and miss as well until I started to look online and see what my men sizes would be in women's sizes and then just size myself up with them. I mean I would love to be able to fit into some tiny panties but my size is like 3 or 4 or 5X when it comes to underwear. When it comes to clothing its about the same thing and I go for those extra big sizes because I am sort of a masculine bulky guy these days so that is what I have to buy.

You will eventually get it down pat.
