Title: HRT and born with a heart condition (help please)
Post by: iLoveCats on August 28, 2015, 06:11:58 PM
Hello,I was born with a heart condition (I think) but no one noticed till I was about 1 years old.Anyway I was on medication and It was gone. I recently got it checked about a few months ago and everything was good. I was wondering if I started HRT would I have even more risks because I had a heart condition? This question has been going through my mind for a while now and I thought I should ask. Thank you! :)

(Sorry if this is wrong forum)

There might be issues with the blockers as they lower the blood pressure but you may be overdue for a workup on your heart. Some issues will correct themselves and it is possible you  no longer have an issue to worry about. Others like a leaky valve might not be enough of a problem to worry about. Let the doctors decide but I suspect HRT at worst might be delayed but not denied.

Should I worry about this? The thought of death honestly scares me so bad but I just can't live like this anymore. I just want to be who I truly am.

Thank you :)

Not until you talk to your Endo, You may no longer have a problem, the problem may not be an issue or it may be correctable. There is a pretty good chance it will not prevent HRT.

Your Dr. will be able to answer that question. Make an appointment to have your heart checked and discuss HRT. I can understand why you are worried. Part of it may come from the fact that your ability to be your intended gender is in the hands of someone else. That always seems to cause anxiety. For Cis people, they are already the gender they should be. What if they had no control over whether they got to keep their reproductive organs that were healthy? They would have the same anxiety.

Think positive. Today's medicine is advanced and there may be no problem with starting HRT with your heart. Don't borrow trouble when you don't have to. We will all be thinking of you.

Could the blockers or hormones be possibly fatal because I had a heart condition? I know this is something I should be asking my doctor but I just can't stop thinking about this right now.

(Sorry that I'm asking so many questions,I'm just quite nervous.)

With hormones the two dangers to look out for is liver damage and blood clots. Liver damage is monitored with regular blood test and blood clots happen because of known risk factors. Both issues can be controlled by reducing dose levels in people at risk.
Blockers were intended as blood pressure medication with the secondary effect of blocking hormone production. In our case the primary goal is to reduce hormone production and the secondary effect is a reduction in blood pressure. If low blood pressure is an issue then blocker might present a problem.
When I transitioned, blockers hadn't been discovered yet so we only took hormones and in my case, I suspect T production wasn't fully shut down. My feminization was better after SRS but even without blockers I did develop a feminine body. One could still transition without blockers but the results might not be as good until after SRS. An Orchi would also be a solution to the lack of blockers but if limited feminization is acceptable, then you could wait until after SRS to finish off the feminization.
