Title: Asking Teachers To Call Be By My Name?
Post by: Zeno on September 02, 2015, 01:16:33 PM
So yeah I'm ftm and in Year 10 (9th grade for Americans). I tried to ask my teachers to call me Theo, but idk what to say. I asked my form teacher in the end if she would tell my teachers for me and she said she'd do that so I should be cool. It's just this one teacher said he won't call me my name unless it's on the register, which really sucks. I can get it changed pretty easy though.

Don't know what the laws are like over there. In my state there are anti-discrimination laws. If a teacher asks students what name they prefer to be called (e.g. some guy named Robert wants to be called Bob), then I would expect they might find themselves in hot water if they refused to extend that courtesy to someone because they were transgender.

Can your parents speak to the teacher? Do you have a counselor you can speak to?

The idea is to make it easier for this teacher to do the right thing rather than to be stubborn.

Most teachers know now anyway somehow, and my new History teacher asked me what I want to be called and she's cool with Theo. I think my form teacher told the teachers or something because they all seem cool with it now. My parents just ignored me so I'll have to wait a year until I can change my name, and we don't get counselors in my school for stuff like this.

Same. 16. ftm, It's also awkward pertaining to the ''he or she'' process. Not everybody understands.

I'm 17, ftm, and live in the US. I got my teachers to call me by my chosen name simply by sitting down and having a talk with them on the first day of school. Surprisingly, each of them were accepting and accept me for who I am, and do call me Liam, as I have asked them to. I've done it at each school I've attended, and so far it's been succesful. I would try asking that teacher if he can address you by that name because it's your nickname, and explain to him that it would make you feel more comfortable if he did so. Try going to administrators or counselors at your school, and try talking to them as well. it worked for me.

What I did before the beginning of the school year (but this can work any time really) was I sent an email to all of my teachers explaining pronouns, name, and how i identified. You don't have to include the label, but that is up to you as it can be helpful to some.
