So I've been dealing with the military for two years. And I can't stand it... I recently talked to an O-5... and was told I can't do ANYTHING to change my gender. No long hair. No nail polish. No gender affirmation.

Oh lord. Wasn't done talking. Curse you chaaaattttt! So I can't do anything and all I can think about is my mess ups. What I've done to be where I am. And I've found that my parents do not accept me. At all. And that's all I had. So I'm alone. Not figuratively. Literally alone. This is the only community that accepts me for me.... Thank you all.

So sorry that your having the issues you are having. You might try moving up the chain of command. Also I thought we heard something recent in regards to transgenered military personnel. Hugs

The Military, although once a frontrunner for equal rights has found itself stagnating on half measures to maintain the grey area which minimizes their profile in the political cross hairs. Luckily or unfortunately (on how you look at it) their policies are not really their own (in the US anyway). The elected officials can make anything happens, if they can ever make enough concessions for each other to agree that the sky is blue. I hope things will get better for you. 😯 The military can be less than empathetic.
If you're talking about the U.S. military then the trans policies haven't changed yet other than it being harder to discharge someone.
They are still "studying" the issue and figuring out what to do. From what I've been reading I expect the new policies will be out sometime in the next year so until then you will just have to wait.
I do hope they move quickly for your sake and for mine too so maybe TRICARE can start picking up some costs.

From my understanding the policy for transgender protections are going to be enforced 27 May 2016.
I'm sorry you are going through a hard time. It is a real big struggle for me too. Though I haven't come out to my command just yet I know its about a 50/50 chance I may be able to do anything.
Of course as the whole policies haven't changed yet, they may consider something later when the policies are there, but otherwise you will have to stick with the possibility of having a wig, nail polish etc... For off duty time, but on duty will of course have to be male mode for sure. Actually in reality if you use clear coat with a matte finish you could still paint your nails on duty time, but otherwise it'll be a bigger struggle.
I hope they can find a way to accommodate your needs if at all possible once it gets closer to policy changeover. Either that or you may need to consider, if it may be possible to transfer to another unit.
Hang in there, it always seems to get harder before everything works out.
