Title: Anyone have short hair their entire life before growing it out for transition?
Post by: rachel89 on September 08, 2015, 07:33:12 AM
So, in case you don't now, I've had short hair my entire life until I started transition. Sometimes I like having longer hair, but sometimes I find it annoying, it can be unruly, in my eyes, a little warm itchy sometimes, slow to dry, and slow to grow into a more feminine style. Sometimes I just feel like buzzing it all off and wearing scarves and wigs instead. This would also enable be to have a more professional appearance when i have to be in guy mode. Does anyone else who used to have short hair ever have days where you get so annoyed by long hair that you just buzz it all off?

Yeah, I had a shaved head most of my old life. I looked mean!

I couldn't stand the feeling of any hair touching my face. I've had to get used to it. Luckily it stands on end though ...

OK a bit of wit here  :-\ Never had that problem... MPB ensured I never had to worry about hair in the way...

But probably if I did, I would gradually grow it out moving in steady steps, but it does depend on your surroundings and your work life I guess.

I have had short hair all my adult life mostly because it was so I could fit in it was part of my "man mask".
When I was younger I let it grow as long as possible... Until my dad told me it was too long or that it made me look like a girl. He would then take me to the barber, this jolly old Italian stereotype who had soccer memorabilia on the walls and porn magazines in the reading material, for a short back and sides.
A few years ago I needed a new barber, the old one having closed, but none had opened in my town. A new hair salon had that was run by two Palestinian men, my "man mask" thought this was suitable and my secret self thought it was great. Gone was the ultra macho environment replaced by photos of women and men with different hairstyles, taken by the hair dresser, men's and women's interest magazines on the coffee table, it was a breath of fresh air at last. It didn't stop my mask from requesting the same old haircut though but the first time, and almost every time I visited, the stylist asked if I was sure. He told me my hair was beautiful and fine, that if it were longer the natural highlights would make it shine like gold instead of the mousy brown it looks when short.
But I digress.
I have had short hair for too long and I look forward to having it get in my eyes, not being able to do anything with it, and it feeling too hot when the weather is bad.

I always had short hair growing up through high school.  The school I attended had a strict dress code for haircuts.  For guys it had to be "short" and off the ears and off the collar basically.

When I was 18 or 19 after graduation I let it grow out a bit, but I never got the split ends trimmed off or took very good care of it so it was always frizzy and huge.  I cut it off and kept it short again until just a few months ago.  Now I'm almost to that length again, but I have a much better hair care regimen and have a stylist that keeps it shaped properly and well maintained every 2 months or so.

I don't think about buzzing it off, that's for sure.  I love my curly hair and am eagerly awaiting the day it actually looks good, haha.

I had a short, what you guys call a grey hair buzz cut? Walked into the swankiest hairdresser and told them I was trans and could they help me.

They have.

I have my own hair beautifully styled.

I love it

I am trying to grow my hair out as of recently. Sometimes I get the feeling they just don't grow at all, they are too short to style them any way and too long to not get bothered at times -w-

Anyway, I am confident after a while, once they are longer, I will be glad to have long hair >3<

As an adult have always had short hair, either written requirement of job or huge unwritten pressure to appear a certain way. Growing up started pushing parents to let my hair grow longer around 11 years old. Longest I ever was able to get it was not quite shoulder length before fathers objections overrode mothers leave him alone attitude.
Funny side story 5th or 6th grade era, memory a little hazy. Friend of my mother visiting with us thought I would look great with blonde hair ala Marilyn Monroe, she had been a hairdresser at some point in her life. She ended up peroxiding my dirty blonde collar length hair to a bright blonde. Mom didn't object, dad was pissed and I loved it. The boys at school made my life miserable ,the girls weren't much better.
Recently found some old pictures from high school, hair was about shoulder length. Made me kind of sad. Oh well no one said life was easy.

Always had short hair. I don't think I could deal with having long hair 24/7. Wigs are fun for long hair once in a while, even then I carry hair bands. Nothing like hair sticking to your lips to make you annoyed. Ha ha ha... I stick with wigs and extensions if I want the look that day. Till I figure out how to manage my hair, I'll settle for a longer pixie. That awkward middle phase was all I could manage... 😕

I had short hair all my life. I avoided growing them since it would have been more feminine and I didn't want to be more feminine. I wanted to be cute as a boy and I think I quite managed that part for a long time.

But well, I always wanted long hair and I'm super happy now that they are longer. Short hairs feels great because you got nothing on your head, but long hair feels better because it's soft, you can play with it, and I feel like having a chignon or ponytail is like having short hair + all the advantages. And well, I have great hair and I love them, which helps I guess.

I would love to have a pixie haircuts...unfortunately I don't have the shoulders/neck/face/forehead to pull it off, so my hair is long (not quite long enough, though; I want it to be able to drape between the breasts by a good few inches).

I count the beginning of my transition the day I looked in the mirror and asked "who the hell is THAT?! I need earrings and long hair!"

I had long hair when I was 19, cut it at 20... albeit regretably.

I'm growing out my hair again, taking a lot more care of it.

I grew up in the Hippie revolution so I had my hair very long, then cut it , then grew it back , then cut it then grew it back. Got really sick with the flu and laid in bed for three days my hair got irreversibly tangled so had to cut it and cut it really short and kept it that way for a long time , then transitioned and the only cutting that will be done is to straighten the ends.

I had really short hair since I was 3. I stopped shaving it a bit more than 2 months ago, and it has been growing pretty fast, and so far, feminine (I am using a biotin based shampoo, and I am on Hormones, and my hair grows fast naturally). I am a bit concerned how I will take care of long hair. So far it is already getting frizzy, and a bit annoying. But I guess i will know more in a few.months.

Sort of.

It never got as long as it is now. However, it was kinda long and bushy before. My wife used to always hound me to cut it.

Mine has been long for much of my life actually.  I started growing it out in my teens and kept it almost waist length until I interviewed for my first "real job" and had it cut short at my ex-father-in-laws request (because I had to get the job, no excuses).

Once I got the job I promptly grew it back out and kept it waist length again until I began working around high speed equipment, so I had it cut short again (I'd seen the "scalping" horror pictures our safety department had of those unlucky enough to get too close to a high speed spindle.)

I kept it that way for about 10 years.  2 years ago I started growing it out again and plan to keep it that way!  It grows so much slower now that I'm older but it's getting there.

Personally, I love my hair long and don't ever want to cut it short again.  I love the way it feels.  I love the weight of it, the feel of it against my skin, the way it looks.  Sure it gets hot in the summer but that's what ponytails are for.  :)

I was made to have short hair as a child, but in my teens I let it grow despite being nagged about it being so long.  Long hair has always felt natural for me and having short hair just plain feels weird.

Me Me Me even after I transitioned. When I was young it was a crew cut or a flat top. By the time I was in high school my mom wanted me to change to a cut short on the side with a couple of inches of length on the top. I hated the idea because I feared longer hair length would expose my secret. It didn't and when I started to transition my hair reached it's longest when I was growing hair for a page boy. I Permed my hair for over 30 years and the hair was never more than 4 inches in length. The style I am growing hair for now is going to be pageboy length once again so I never have felt what it's like to have truly long hair. I envy those of you who have the face to pull off long hair but I don't.

I have had many style of hair length, although I always loved and wanted long hair. I have had short hair when I was really young, to long hair in my late teens. I loved my hair then (cut off by a country barber when  I ask him to just trim the ends). I think this was indicative of my true self. I also suffer from MPB. This has caused me much grief and caused me to go for over 15 years totally shaved. Over the past 5-10 years, I had allowed my hair to grow so that I could wear a short pony tail, or been shaved. With the help of HRT, my hair is growing well. Dutasteride along with spin and E. seems to work for me. In the last couple of weeks, when my wife and I are out and about, I am most often correctly gendered. Makes me smile and onward I go!

My hair was always a short back and sides with a little more length on top - until I came out. Then I let my hair grow out until it was just over shoulder length and learnt that long hair wasn't my thing at all. A couple of shorter styles happened before I settled on my current look, which is both short and kinda long.

I grew it out for 3+ years in my 20s. Later on I didn't touch it for almost 5 years but had to cut it off, which I now regret. The 2nd time around I had already started to transition.

No, I hated going to the barbershop as kid stopped going when I was 12 or 13. Have had my hair at least shoulder length since about 1970.

Yup! I had short hair my entire childhood, and I started shaving my head when I was 17. People I haven't seen in a while are shocked when they see my long hair.

I've had short hair most of my life. Now it's just past shoulder length but very curly. I love my curly hair and am very thankful for it. Though it is a pain to take care of.

Had short to very short hair while growing up, either crew cut or just plain short. When I was 16 was when I had a fascination to start growing my hair out, due to the fact I wanted to have my hair braided, never got long enough to the point in which to braid my hair up until I was 20 and signing my life away for the army.
But while my hair was at a decent length, not quite long enough to tie it back, though when brushed down it was around toward my jawline.

Edit: One day when I do get the chance to grow my hair out (hoping the military protections come out sooner) I'll probably try and have my hair either jaw length to shoulder length.

I'd always try and grow it out long but I was always forced to get it buzzed. Into adulthood I was pressured to get it buzzed being told that long hair made my face look fat or that it was unflattering etc. I used to get it military buzzed every other week and I hated it.

I had shortish hair for the first 18ish years but Unless we want to count 16 years ago as when I started to transision, even though I never did anything medical till this year then yes.. but no not really.

one of the things people kept bringing up was how it must be hard for me getting used to shaving my legs and fixing my hair every day and I tell them all the same thing. "my hair is not much more work, its shorter now than before I transisioned and I used to braid it each morning now I just blow dry a bit and use some defrizzer" "as for the legs, I have been shaving ankles to ears sense my senior year of high school so thats nothing new" in fact make up is the only new time sink to me getting ready in the morning.

I always had short hair growing up while pretending to be the boy everyone wanted me to be, and in my professional career I had it short to "conform"

But that was then! It's been four years since my last haircut and it's going to be a long time before I get anything other than a trim to pretty up the ends a bit.

I LOVE how my hair looks longer and I also had no idea my natural color would look like this :)

Happy dance!

This photo was from three months ago so a bit longer now.

The last time I felt that way, I had a haircut to thin it all out a bit. My hair is so thick it literally breaks brushes, so I really did want it tamed somewhat.

I've worn my hair long since high school, except when my father harassed me into getting it cut so I could get a job out of college. I HATED that, and promptly grew it back out again. I love that I can wear it loose post-transition instead of ponytailed or pulled back. I usually go a bit too long between haircuts, so my hair is typically mid-back length (it's actually to my waist when wet, but curly enough that it looks shorter once dry) and the shortest I've cut it on my own was to just below the bra straps. To me that's short, but even my wife's hair is to her butt so I may have a skewed view of "long." ;)

Growing up my hair was always a short back and sides, nice and short.

I starting growing my hair when I started cross dressing more often, I did not want to wear a wig. I was 19 at that time. Long hair was irritating at first, but I got use to it.

After I started hormones at 21, I had my already long hair styled in a more female style. Then I let it grow to my waist. Then I had it cut to about shoulder length. The reason I cut it, as it difficult to clean, with hair that length blow drying my hair took ages.  My hair now is about down to about my shoulder blades. I maintain it at this length now. when it get long, i get it trimmed.

I have short hair now. Have had it most of my life. But it has always been with a boy's/man's cut in mind. My hair is quite thick. I don't mind going to the barber, but I kind of wish I could get it styled how I felt. Cute and feminine over masculine and short.

One day though. :)

Growing up, I was always forced to get my hair cut >:( Once it got kinda long I was forced to go get it cut. Now, I've been growing it out for a year and it's awesome, but annoying at the same time lol. I remember growing up with short hair and seeing people with long hair and giving them a hard time, telling them to cut it. Now I know how freaking annoying that is! Not a day goes by that SOMEONE tells me to cut my hair  >:(  I find it most annoying when it gets in your eyes and itches your face! I resort to wearing a headband every day until I can figure out what I want to do with it. That's another thing, trying to figure out how to style it and what you want to do with it! I want that gorgeous ombre hair, but I just don't want to listen to people b*tch at me for it  :-X

Ever since I can remember, I wanted very long hair, but my mom buzzed my hair every month. I promised myself that when I grew up, I wouldn't cut my hair. When I started growing it, the hardest  part was getting it long enough to put in a pony tail, as I hated it flying in my face. But as a man ,I got teased about long hair, so when I found out about transgender people, that helped me to become a girl, so I wouldn't be teased. I wish I had floor length hair, as when I had knee length extensions, it was the best feelings I have ever had!!! esther

I always kept my head shaved for fear of having too feminine a hairstyle. Been growing it out for almost a year now. I keep hoping when it gets long enough, that the weight of the hair will loosen the curls into a wave, but all that seems to be happening is that the size of my hair gets larger and larger. I need the 80s to come back so I look normal again. I fear I may ultimately end up cutting it short and just going with the tight curls in the end.

I used to have beautiful long golden dreadlocks in my 20s

I was devastated to cut them off but they were starting to look messy.  I should of grown it back long but never got round to it.  That was 15 years ago!  I'm growing it now though and am loving it.  I have beautiful hair just a shame about the face and slight bald spot on the top arrrrgh!!! LOL

Actually looking back most people probwould of thought i was gay or trans because i was so fem with the hair,  beads etc...In fact i was very close to going to the doctor back then about this gender dysphoria but i got caught up in drugs for a while and I got a bit lost (which was a good escape at the time)

Anyway looking forward now not back,  I love long hair! :D

Prior to coming out my hair was never more than a few inches long. Would have to get it cut every couple of months so that I could keep it short. now after 18 months of hrt and 2 years since first coming out my hair is down past my shoulders from only half an inch before coming out.
