"The government has rebuffed calls to allow people to self-define their gender – claiming it has a "legitimate" interest to block it due to "important legal and social consequences".
The UK Ministry of Justice was responding to a Parliamentary petition calling for reforms to the UK's gender recognition laws – after the Republic of Ireland made revolutionary changes that make changing your legal gender as simple as renewing your passport."
I fear a government that thinks they can tell people who you they are.
Why do people seem to want this?

They don't - People want a government that allows "me" to be who I am while telling "You" who you should be.
In other words they imagine that the government control will naturally apply to "Them" while "Us" will be left free.
Its the classic conceptual failing of everyone who support authoritarianism. They always imagine this enforcement action as applied to "others" of whom they disapprove, and never think that they could be next on the list.
Ehhh, it's just ignorance and fear of the unknown
