Hi I am transitioning mtf and I have body dysmorphic disorder. One thing I am worring about passing, is my head size. Because I feel like I have a huge head for a female when I measure my head it is 55cm and it is avarage for a woman, although I know my head is avarage when I look at the mirror it look big and I feel like I cant pass to female because of my head! ??? :(
You could try to grow your hair out.
If framed by curly hair it will look more feminine regardless of size.
You could try bangs over the forehead and the brow area...
trim brows (careful... you might start from below and look at results often) or have them trimmed...
you will probably look fine :)
I have a large head size as well and require an extra large motorcycle helmet but I have large shoulders which balance the head size out. If you look at CIS women you may notice that there heads tend to be big for their shoulder size so a large head isn't a problem as long as everything balances out. If you are still uncomfortable then Laura's hair suggestion would help as well.
It's weird - I read the title of this and went off for a little look on the internet. Seriously, it's something I'd never really thought about, and knew even less ;) I'd always thought of men being the ones with unusually small heads! Turns out I was wrong, or perhaps because Essex has its share of massive-shoulder body builder types who end up looking all out of proportion. To me most women's heads look sort of average in comparison with their bodies. As in, like, the actual size of the whole head if that makes any sense. The large body and small head look is a guy thing in my opinion. I have an average sized head but a small body, and to be honest it's never given me a second thought! Maybe it should? ;)
My look at some chart thing on a website revealed there's hardly any difference. It's maybe a centimetre between the genders in terms of average size. I suppose guys are more likely to go round with their heads on display. Being bald, or having very short hair, kind of exposes the whole head :) But long hair can deceive the eye, it can add bulk to a head or soften sharp lines.
Apparently, the bigger differences come from the way the skull is constructed. I've even found a picture!!

I've never liked skull print designs but the real things are so interesting. I think I read somewhere else that facial feminisation surgery is based on somehow turning the male skull into something that resembles the female.
But they said on the skull website that the comparison is extreme. I think most people fall somewhere between the fully male and fully female. So maybe it's head shape rather than actual size?
On my scale, 55cm is pretty damn small.
But also comes down to how tall are you. I am 183cm tall, head diameter is 59cm. The proportions don't disturb me and are not a deal breaker for passing.
The bottom line is, cis women exist whose head appears larger, due to hair or any reason whatsoever. Why not join that crowd.
This will sound horrible . . . you are fine! The reasons you don't feel fine have little to do with how you truly look.
Sooo, here's the homework:
- Get dressed, put some light makeup on and do a little coiffing and go out!
- STOP looking in the mirror!
- That's not where your problem is at.
- And do try getting into a support group and start gender therapy if you haven't already.
Please stay in touch and best to you and yours,
Rachel
