Title: small but very real burnt skin on IPL laser
Post by: ganjina on October 01, 2015, 09:24:49 PM
Hey ladies, guys!

I had this problem at an IPL with a skin burn. It's small but it's mean. What if I had that done to my face?
Am concerned because as with any other place here you pay in advance, but the place was well referred by customers and big institutes alike. It's just one doctor and a handful of assistants, the place was neat, it's always full of clients, it's been in business at least for one full year if not more...

This was this morning, I kind of felt the burn when dressing up but did not even look up, thought it was nothing. I thought about confronting them directly tomorrow and ask for a refund but it's not like I can coerce them into that, at best I can make a big fuss and have the police come in and scare clients, but... uhm yeah... what to do? Could be a long and tedious thing in a court.. hmmm...

I've 2 pics in this link to download. You don't need an account or anything.

When laser hair removal was new thing, I had my chest, stomach and arms done and on my stomach there was a similar mark but even larger in area. It is caused by using too strong a setting, in those early days it may be excusable. I remember a gay friend going with me and he was really upset and actually sued them for mal practice.

I saw your pics and if its anything like mine it took years to disappear. I would challenge the place where you do your laser and ask what they plan to do to correct this. Its NOT normal and is negligent or a malpractice (not sure what the best term).

I was burned much worse than that in 2001 when I first started laser hair removal.  It took a couple of years, but after that there was no trace at all, so don't worry about scarring.

My recommendation is to bring disposable ice packs with you to each appointment (the kind that you pinch, and they activate) and ice right after your laser for a faster recovery.  But burns should never happen with a professional laser or IPL technician.

I'm going to get people to disagree about this, but I own a big ipl machine and I know some stuff with my last 2 brain cells..

My advice:
1. If it goes away in 24hrs, you are ok, just ask to turn it down 1 joule

2. If it's still there, have them turn it down a few joules, try another test, and wait another 24hrs

3. Are you on any meds that make you sensitive to light?  Don't do until you stop those meds a couple weeks

4.  Have you got a tan there?  Do not tan or get sun 2 weeks before and after ipl treatments.

5.  Did they use cooling gel or ultrasound gel?  If not, they are not pros and don't use them!

There is an actual wavelength and duration for your hair and skintype..  if you pm me those, I can give you the settings to ask for or verify..  a lazy tech may use same settings, and high settings on a blonde, light skinned person will scar a dark hair, darker skin person.  A setting for darkskin, dark hair will be a waste on a light skinned blonde..  then the combos in between..  there is a double flash on dark haired people with cooling time in between in the ms..  if not, you can scar..

It's a science, and it will work if set right..  don't ever trust your tech!  Don't ever start the first shot of the machine on your face when it starts up or setup..

Plus, if they don't know if it can be used on your face, then don't let them use it on your face!  Keep 3" away from eyes!  The pulse will go through eyelids any closer and can cause burns on your eyes!  I use zinc oxide on my eyelids out an inch to block stray light when working on my face!..  I let my electrolysis lady do around my eyes and lips, and light hairs the machine can't do..

Hope this helps:)  jamie
