I'm a huge believer in doing what you are good at, and follow by what you love. The reason being, not everyone is good at everything and we're not all made equal. I never really consider the financial world as a field to seriously get into, but this week I made close to 1k in the stock market (my first stock too; good timing and maybe luck). Now, I thought about it, and I think I could be really good at this field because I am multi-cultural-type person, understand psychologies, "people-professional" skills are there, and looking at the stocks non-stop is kind of fun, and researching too. And this field will never die, and it can only grow based on your skills. I would get a degree in finance/business.
And as a transgender woman, I think i would be a minority in this field, which would help me get specific clients, if I use that to my advantage. Obvious, change my tactics to fit the client, if he or she is religious or homophobic.
And as far as fullfilling all my life goals, I think it would do well enough. Money is a big factor, but happiness will be there because I will feel I made a big impact if I increase profits of others. I think I would be a financial analyst, and work for the government, for a pension. And be a stock brocker as well.
Do you consider this as a legit field to break into? Obviously a lot of obstacles to get through though. And obvious the risk is high... but really, an educated risk isn't something I am afraid of.
I have been in the financial field all my life. As I transition I continue in this area. Our financial area has many TGs and it is very evident if you attend any LGBT function. These functions are all supported by tents and sponsorship from major banks such as JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, HK Banking group, Barclay's and so many more.
I will say that it is a male world and many artificial glass ceilings on promotions are there for females. A division of my firm actually assists TGs who are in this field. These institutions need diversity to satisfy legal and moral requirements.
Go for it but remember in stock trading you win and lose. Even with the best technical support and education only a few excel.
I've been in finance nearly 10 years now (Construction, Freight then Property) since my first job in accounts payable. I did go down the route of having a job I can tolerate that pays well over a job that I love that pays poorly. Maybe I'll have a career change at some point, but not right now.
My current employer has been mostly OK about me but obviously it varies from company to company. My firm is pretty small.

I've been in finance for 20 years now. It's not about buying and selling stock's. That's for the punters who like to loose their money. It's no better than putting it on the horses or the dish lickers. The big companies/investors make money as their IS always a winner and a looser for every transaction always.
I currently work of a large US bank JP Morgan and have yet to come out yet but like Warlock maker said they have a strong support for LGTBI people. I specialise in performance and am one of the best they have globally. I get paid well which is what you want. Trading? forget it.
You need to be strong in maths and able to follow procedures as their are no cowboys or cowgirls allowed post GFC.
Companies just don't want the risk of loosing billions.
