Title: University
Post by: Dani257 on October 13, 2015, 01:50:39 AM
Hi all, not sure if this is the right place for my question, but I'll try here first.

I was studying as a mature student on a university program, which involves undertaking two work based placements. I successfully completed the first placement and all the coursework up to the second placement. I then commenced the second placement, but it didn't go well. I left this placement and withdrew from the course. Following on from this I came out to my wife and family that I am transsexual, however I am still pre everything, although I realise transition is something I am seriously considering. I have been to see my doctor but as yet no referral to a gic has been made, although this is something I am seeking.

It is now 18 months later and I have contacted my university with a view to going back. They have said this is possible in principle. However they are asking me to obtain a report from my doctor. If I transition I would not do so until the placement is finished. So my question really is it right for them to ask for a report from my doctor?

Many thanks

Have they explained why they need info from your doctor?

If you withdrew for medical reasons it is reasonable for them to ask your PCP if you are OK to continue.

Hi thanks for the very swift replies,

I didn't withdraw for medical reasons the original placement just didn't work out, and following on from this I took time out and accepted who I am. They are concerned I am going to transition whilst on placement,  this is why they are asking for doctors report. I certainly wouldn't do this, as even if I wanted to, the waiting times here in the UK would mean I would finish the placement before reaching the end of the waiting list.
