I sounded out my GP about transitioning, thinking it would be nice if he were on board with everything, and he responded by telling me that all I needed to do was dress like a girl, put on some makeup, and go to a stylist. And that I have XX chromosomes, would always have XX chromosomes (fair enough) and would therefore always be a woman.
So, I'm thinking I may need to find a new GP.
Yikes. That's above and beyond the usual transgender illiteracy. Sorry you had to deal with that, dude. I would definitely find a new GP ...unless you particularly loved this guy for other reasons, and wanted to be his official trans educator or something like that. I don't think I'd have the energy, myself, but you do you. ;D
Did you use the word trans(gender, transition, whatever) when you talked to him? If I try to give him the benefit of the doubt, I can imagine a hypothetical scenario where he maybe somehow managed to wildly misinterpret what you were saying. Or something. Idk.
You've just learned something very useful about your doctor. It's not something that's easily discovered, so best not to waste it.
No matter how you look at it your doctor is incompetent. You could go to the trouble of educating your doctor, show him the WPATH guidelines and so on, but at the end of the day he is still incompetent. Do you really wanted to be looked after by an incompetent doctor? Next time you might not be so lucky.
Wow that sucks, definitely find a new GP.

Thanks everyone. I think getting a new GP is the only option. I just don't have the energy to educate someone so woefully ignorant. And so eager to force his view of the world on me. I really don't think I could trust him to manage my care on this. Happily, I have an appointment with the gender clinic here next month, and they may be able to suggest an alternative.

Wow, Thomas, that whole thing is so crazy. I think you are making the right decision to move on. Are you in the U.S., or another country?
Add "and you are mentally unbalanced and need intensive therapy to accept yourself as a woman," and you have the gist of the first FTM book I ever read--and likely the first clinical book on FTMs then in existence. If not for that book, my path could have been very, very different. I spent twenty years sort of floundering around, being afraid, and not quite embracing my maleness.
Sounds like you have a MUCH better option.
I don't live in the US anymore, which is a good thing. I'm from BF nowhere Mississippi, and it isn't the most tolerant place on the planet. Far from it. Now living in Belgium, where people tend to be, if not accepting, more prepared to mind their own business and let you mind your own. Plus the healthcare is far, far better than anything I could afford at home.
Arch - yeah, he also suggested that I see a therapist, apparently not having paid attention when I said I was seeing a therapist and have been for a year now. The more I think of it, the more po'd I get about it.
