Title: Miniature gaming
Post by: ElizabethSoul on October 15, 2015, 06:29:54 PM
Does anyone play games like Heroclix or Horrorclix? I play both and have for quite awhile.

Years ago I used to play MageKnight, but the game never really took off in New Zealand and I could never get anybody else at the gaming club to play a game with me.  I ended up removing the clix bases and rebasing and painting any Mageknight figures that were suitable for Warhammer Fantasy Battles.  Quite a few of the later series Orc and Goblin MK figures were excellent for Warhammer as were the Elf and Treefolk MK figures.

I always thought it was a pity that MageKnight wasn't a success here and most of the problem lay with the fact that most of the very first Rebellion series figures were just plain awful.  By the time the horrible first release figures were redesigned the damage was done and retailers who'd been burned by lack of sales didn't want to know.

I've got a Heroclix Wonder Woman figure sitting on top of my computer monitor, but she's the only Heroclix figure I own.

Right now I'm getting into Dropzone Commander and I have Infinity and Malifaux on the back burner.

Alas I have never played a clix. I did play Mosterpocalypse when that was still a thing.

I'm a kiwi too and there was Heroclix being played at a club I frequent just this last weekend! (at least I think it was heroclix, I was playing something else :P)

Just tonight I was looking at all the storage boxes where I keep my miniature figures and armies and I found myself wondering what I'm going to do with all of them.  I don't see myself ever playing again and I certainly don't want to throw them all in the bin because too much work with customising and painting has gone into a lot of them (sigh).

the new stuff i'm never going to paint/play is vexing me. I've traded/sold some stuff on bartertown. might be a good place to find them a new home.

Hey! My career is a professional miniature painter. I've worked on some big games such as Sedition Wars, Dread Ball and Zombiecide, as well as a whole lot of private commissions for other games. I really enjoyed painting Super Dungeon Explore, it was so much fun. I was working on DropZone Commander when I left the biz to transition, but the studio had it well under control :) Not played any games in a good while though. X

MK never really happened around here either, we had a few people ask about tournaments and so we threw one on our schedule for three weeks, week one, no one showed, week two we decided to report something so me and a friend played a few games, he won we reported it so the wizkids website would say the tournament had happend. The third week once again no one showed up, we started playing against each other gave up and went and got scorpion bowls.

Some 40K being played but GW has been doing everything in its power to destroy the game, so it has dropped off, my game stores use to be annual 40K megabattle which had about 50 players last time we held it has not happened for years. Warmechine/hordes goes back and forth, the new X-wing game has been popular, and a friend of mine ran a monthly huge game of battle tech for about 7 years.

I personally have Blood Angels, Thousand Sons, a bit of circle of orberoes, a few dozen mechs, and a few boxes of star wars, and D&D mini's and I don't really consider myself a minatures gamer. I know I am awful at painting.

Serena

PS. Moomin you have a very cool job. At least to geeks like me. :-P

Hey miniature gamers, how are you? I have done some "professional" painting in the past, for a shop during the early nineties and I still avidly play "historicals" although I have very recently purchased Warzone Resurrection and the beginnings of an Imperial force for this. I also play Dark Elves/High Elves in WFB thanks to Malekith's newly found high kingship. Additionally I am a one eyed Imperial 40k player with Grey Knights and those old vanilla chappies the Ultramarines (but hey, if you can't win with 'em you're no general). I have an Indian (Apaches as I like to think of them) posse for Dead Man's Hand while today I actually played another of Great Escape's games which was WWII in 15mm. "Kampfgruppe" I think it might have been called but I stand to be corrected on this. I play Napoleonics weekly in 28mm using Black Powder rules and I have oodles and oodles of British for this. Indeed I helped build the terrain for a Waterloo spectacular (400 ft square in total) that myself and my friends got involved in. My current project is an Arthurian British campaign which will soon be up and running. I will be post Romans fighting Scots/Irish and Saxons.
I am about to undergo an MTF transition which my wargaming pals are unaware of as they are also unaware of my gender dysphoria but I am oddly enough gaming with an FTM guy who also attends the same gender support centre that I frequent. It's a small world and there are more of us out there than I had initially realised.
Anyway this is one masculine seeming pastime that I am happy to still pursue.
Sorry for blathering on and on,
I LOVE my games and figure painting,
xoxo,
Roxanne.

It's great to see more gamer girls. I'm in same boat with my gaming group. Don't know many of them well,so not sure how they will react. We just started arcadia quest and zombicide B.P. in home games. Beat undercity and we are about halfway thru shadows of brimstone. So no matter what I will still have a trans frndly home gaming group. Not so sure about my d&d and miniature group. May just put d&d,warmachine and infinity on the back burner for a bit.
Title: Re: Miniature gaming
Post by: roxie rudi on January 03, 2016, 02:42:11 PM
Many of my gaming group are "blokey" and consider me as a "mate" which are very masculine references to our accepted personas. However I identify as a woman (secretly at present) and will be making my first steps to my transition soon and yet I have every faith that these "fellas" will be ultimately accepting because I know them to be "good blokes". However I expect some confusion at best from my longest gaming friends which might turn nasty, one never knows for certain. C'est la vie, my need to be seen as a woman overwhelms me whereas my abiding love of miniature games doesn't.
Anyway.... I am really missing playing Epic WH40k at present because I sold all my 6mm Imperial forces years ago. But at least Warzone has resurfaced and I have plenty of Germans for Flames of War. I might paint some figs today....what to paint? What to paint? Any suggestions?
I'm quite the oddball, I'm a construction worker, I love miniature games but I'm almost dying to be a girl! Go figure eh? Hope you guys have been cool with me venting and blathering.

Ciao,
xoxo,
Roxanne.

No need to apologize, that's what we're all here for. My situation is similar. I'm not to point where alot of ppl are noticing yet. Someone needs to start a thread for mini pics. We have some talented girls on here.

Thanks LJP, you're a nice girl that's for sure!

Fantastic idea too! All I have to do now is work out how to take decent photos with my phone and post them onto this forum to start a painted figs thread. It's only 8 in the morning where I live so I will have to wait until my nephew wakes up because he's the only tech savvy person that I live with who has enough know how to hopefully post photos!

Wow, a way to combine my love of miniature gaming with an overwhelming inner beauty! This is just too cool for words! I'll be back in several hours to start a painted figs thread. Happy Sunday!

Hi LJP, unfortunately I live in a semi rural area without mobile/cell phone reception so I only use them for work and social reasons. Thus I am tech ignorant but at least I have a router for the internet. I don't even know what photobucket is without making stupid jokes....ahem.
I will probably need my nephew's help sadly. It's okay because I have at least come out to him as kids (he's 17) of his generation are some of the first youngsters to become truly LGBT understanding which is awesome. He's also a clever little man with whom I have been close since his birth. I mention this because he might have to see this site in order to help show me how to post photos.
I really do thank you for the advice but LJP!

Roxanne.

Don't worry my photographic skills aren't all that good either ;)

I haven't painted anything for a long time as I don't play anymore.  I do have some favourites though.

Repainted MageKnight figure.  She was intended to ride in a chariot drawn by a winged Pegasus which I haven't completed yet.

Tiny fairy character.  She usually was played as a Mage with my Wood Elves.

WOW!!! Great figs! Make me want to play right now! I especially love the intricate work on the fairy mage and the character of the Goblin chief.
I have never even seen Mage Knight, let alone played it. I am more familiar with historicals and sci fi but I have a nice Dark Elf WFB army.

Thanks Roxie :)  Most of my MageKnight figures ended up being converted for Warhammer as I couldn't find anyone who wanted to play the game with me.

More figures.  These are pretty much the last ones I painted.  I was having problems with hand-eye co-ordination as well as problems with my eyesight.

Warhammer 5th edition spear Elves I have lots of these as well as other 4th and 5th edition Elves which I prefer over the later figures.

Ooooh noooo! I have to start playing around with my figs now! The bug is biting! I have just seen a true collection! I love the elves but I am more intrigued by the more unusual Mantic Figures.
I am tech ignorant but I will try to photograph and post more of my figs tomorrow, particularly some of my Dark Elves.
I can see that you are a true lover of your figs which, to me, is a wondrous thing and I feel very complimented that you are showing these pieces of an artistic love that you have. My Dark Elves range from 4th edition WFB to I  think 8th edition but among my gaming friends GW is not currently being enjoyed much.
Unfortunately it is VERY early in the morning (it's dark still) and I'm tired but seeing your characterful and beautiful collection I shall fall asleep dreaming of fantasy battles.

Thanks Roxanne :)  I was always more of a painter and model maker than a gamer and as my health improves I may go back to working on my model figures again just for the pure fun of creating them.  I think Games Workshop has really messed things up because their model figures are expensive and their constant rule changes which often do little to improve things during game play and with every edition require investment in new models has driven fantasy wargamers away from their products in droves.

Mantic Games has a range of inexpensive fantasy figures and a good set of rules for their battle system that they have committed to maintaining without constant unnecessary upgrade editions.  They also have a policy where they welcome model figures by any makers at their tournaments; - something that GW doesn't do.  Mantic also make their basic rules available for free on-line.  I've got a Mantic Elf army still on the sprues that I haven't done anything with yet.  Most probably because something I do not lack for is High Elf and Wood Elf model figures.
When my son  was younger he had a Dark Elf army and when he came to visit during the holidays we would spend hours together playing 5th edition Warhammer.  Between us we had decided that whatever rule changes GW made we would stick with the 5th edition rules, but we did use the 6th edition magic system.  My son was a very clever player and would often be the winner in our games, - except for one glorious game where my Halfling (Hobbit) army soundly defeated his Dark Elves which was something he didn't expect at all.

I did have thoughts of putting together a Mantic Basilean Sisterhood army and I've got a box of unassembled figures that I made a start on before I gave up in frustration.  I may come back to them again sometime.
(Not my models by the way, these are Mantic's own display Sisterhood figures)
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi883.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fac31%2FSanctaRosa5%2FFantasy%2520Wargaming%2FSisterhoodPantherRiders_zpso37echpv.jpeg&hash=90e18c990b2f87950104d9edf833c583ee06db9e) (http://s883.photobucket.com/user/SanctaRosa5/media/Fantasy%20Wargaming/SisterhoodPantherRiders_zpso37echpv.jpeg.html)

I've always been a fantasy wargamer as I don't really like playing historical or modern warfare games.  I have played some Ancients games as either Sarmatians or Persians back when I was involved with a club, but I sold all my Ancients stuff a while ago.

Hi Lady Smith, morning to you! Yes I thoroughly agree with you about GW and their latest approach to Fantasy Battles is terrible. Not only is it another reason to have to purchase more Citadel figs it has "dumbed down" the rules by an unbelieveable degree. This is all a pity because ever since I was a schoolboy in my earliest teens I have loved Citadel miniatures because I believe they are the best figs anywhere.
Wow lovely display figs but I don't know if Mantic are available to gamers where I live, which is Sydney, Australia. I might be wrong and I willingly stand to be corrected on this BUT MOST OF ALL I HOPE THAT YOU START FEELING BETTER. My heart is here for my sister!
Basilean? Does that have anything to do with either a king or a leader's capitoline building(s)? It's just that "basileus" in ancient Greek (or is it Latin? I've forgotten which) means a king while basileum means a capitol building, like the White House might be called. I think.
Halflings defeating Dark Elves boo hoo, sob sob! This makes me sad but thoughts of Persians and Sarmatians make feel happy again. Ancients are my absolute fave game, bar none! I love Dark Age games and am currently building a Post Roman/Sub Roman British (or Welsh) army in 28mm.
I hope you start being healthy again Lady Smith. Your sisters love you.

Bye, ciao bella,

Roxanne.

Wonderful to see your 5th edition Dark Elves Roxanne.  I think those older metal minis are far better than what GW is trying to sell these days.  I like your 15mm Ancients too.  When GW did the LotR minis I started to collect Rohan minis because I liked that whole Dark Ages/Iron Age feel they had about them.  But then the last thing I needed was to collect figures for yet another ruleset when I had nobody to play against.  I still have them all in a box somewhere.

Hi Lady Smith! Since seeing your figs I asked around the peeps I game with and found that Mantic does quite a few things that I hadn't realised. One guy I know is using some very nice Mantic Skeletons for a skirmish game called Frostgrave that has just been released. Nice game, reminiscent of Mordheim but more focus on magic and magicians! Sorry I was wrong about Mantic's availability where I live. And I find out they're great now!
That's certainly a problem when collecting something new! ANOTHER range....it still needs to be painted....gamers still need to meet up....space to keep them still needs to be found....it goes on and on, especially when you already have faves that need work.
Yes the Rohirrim are fantastic! They are a Saxon/Goth hybrid of Tolkien's! I love them!

I really like what Mantic is doing, - offering a fantasy gaming ruleset with an interesting background history to go with it AND miniature figures which are actually affordable.  GW used to do that, - so what went wrong?

One of my favourite minis in my collection.

The Elf in the middle has a broken spear blade which was like that when I purchased the mini second hand.

Old Glory Elves.  Very different to GW Elves, but at the time I purchased them stunningly cheaper than GW and they are metal.  Not the best picture my camera was on the way out so i was using my scanner.
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi783.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fyy111%2FWilda_Greenbough%2FMyMiniatures%2FOldGloryCommandGroup_zps9453e017.jpg&hash=c452c9303d9298ec847d330c76ffcd558702d453) (http://s783.photobucket.com/user/Wilda_Greenbough/media/MyMiniatures/OldGloryCommandGroup_zps9453e017.jpg.html)

A custom mod on a figure I'd already stolen the head from for another conversion.  She's holding aloft a 5th edition rulebook with a big Roman numeral 'V' on the cover. My protest over the change by GW to 6th edition rules which I didn't like much.

Swordmasters.  I didn't paint these, they were a lucky find.

Wargaming with printed paper figures was something I did fairly often as it was a way to try out a different army at little cost.  It also made it easy to carry a large army with you when travelling.

The figures on the left are from my own artwork, the chariot on the right was specially created for me by a skilled graphic artist who sells a range of paper wargaming figures.

Wow Lady Smith, you are a true gamer. As true as any I would ever be likely to meet and I have been using figs since Citadel miniatues were sold in plastic baggies that catered for D&D and the sci-fi RPG "Traveller."

The gaming part of your soul is precious! HUGE RESPECT for you Lady Smith! Your posts really rock me! And Elves are very cool, I have always thought so.

No matter GW's corporate silliness there seems like there will always be figure manufacturers for true gamers like yourself Lady Smith and for that I will always be grateful cos' I LOVE gaming, painting and collecting figures too!

Ciao bella gamer,

Beautiful miniatures Lady Smith and Roxie! Such a cool thread  8)

The Mantic Basilean Sisterhood army were painted at my studio. Not by me though, but a very lovely and talented friend.

Hey Moomin, it's great that you like this thread! And thanks for the great words!

I only wish that I had the lighting skills etc for the photography necessary to bring some justice to my figure painting abilities. Especially after seeing some of LadySmith's wonderful collection which is making me feel like a stuffy old historical nerd who doesn't scratch-build much. And also especially because a professional figure painter, like yourself, can see and appraise what I  have painted.
Anyway I honestly appreciate your praise Moomin.

Ciao bella (and you are 'multa bella' in your pic Moomin),

Roxanne.

Moomin, all I can say is FANTASTIC figs! And thanks for posting them, this thread is certainly becoming a miniature gamer's paradise now.
Ohhh, I love that Imperial Swordsman. I might even be a "historicals" geek and call him a beautifully painted Landsknecht (a later Renaissance soldier for those less geeky than myself).
I am also intrigued by the unusual colour scheme for the undead character, who looks to me like a uniquely painted Tomb Kings warrior. Not only are your painting skills wonderful but they also possess character!
A gamer says thank you Moomin.

Beautiful miniature figures Moomin.  Thank you so much for sharing your pictures with us.  I always found it encouraging seeing the work of a skilled miniature figure painter.  It would make me pause to consider how I might improve my own painting.
By the way I wondered who had painted the Mantic Basilean Sisterhood army, - and now I know.  If any model figures could prod me back into painting again those would be the ones.

Lady Smith and Moomin I am overwhelmed by your figures AND your obvious love of painting. If more of the world's people could learn to put so much of their soul's thoughts and care into figure painting we would be living in a much more bearable place. Of course this can be said of any (and all) beautifully presented artworks....oh well....

Your profile pic Lady Smith BLOWS ME AWAY! How cool! How dedicated!

WOW guys! I mean.....wow WOW guys!

I'm pretty certain I have some historical figs by Old Glory (Seven Years War Hanoverians I seem to remember) and I can only assume it's the same Old Glory that has made your cool Elves Lady Smith. As another aside I looove your she-centaur, especially because I have always had love and respect for Ral Partha figs. Do they still make them? I really, really hope so! They once made these great sci-fi figs that I used to drool (forgive me) over.

Thanks again Moomin for taking this thread seriously. I honestly appreciate it!

Ciao,

Roxanne.

Thanks Roxanne :D  I love Ral Partha figures too, but I'm not certain if they are available anymore.  I did hear that some were going to be reissued again. only I don't know what happened about that.  Some of the last series of Mage Knight figures were based on certain Ral Partha figures which was useful because I was able rebase and repaint them for Warhammer Fantasy.  That she-Centaur was a delight to paint and she remains a firm favourite of mine.

Yes Old Glory issued their Fantasy figures under the name 'Ghost Miniatures' and they used to be stunningly cheap to buy even taking into account the exchange rate and postage.  Quite a few of my Elves were a hybrid province of Avelorn High Elf/Wood Elf mix which made them useful for both armies with no changes at all.  That was where the wee fairy mages, the Old Glory Elf riders and the Centaurs fitted in which sometimes made opponents stare, but the last thing I wanted was a boring army that was the same as everyone else's

Ta for liking my 'shabby fairy' avatar.  I should really get back to doing larger figures again because they are fun to do.

A part of my Elf army on parade.  Some are unpainted, but don't look at those ones  :eusa_whistle:

A she-Elf sorceress I sculpted from scratch.  V'ana could be best described as 'chaotic neutral' and and was quite powerful as a scorceress.  She had her own special rules which meant that she could be recruited to just about any fantasy race's army, BUT the difficulty was making sure she stayed and didn't wander off or get distracted when she was needed most.  And that's dirt on her skin, that's not her natural skin colour!

I used to wargame with modified Lego, Playmobil and similar figures too which used to horrify some people.  I mostly used the larger figures for skirmish type games, but Lego minifigs can be used for Warhammer if you can find an opponent whose willing to take a Lego army seriously.

Hey Lady Smith!
I'm laughing at your Lego/Playmobil figures right now but IN A GOOD WAY!
I like them because;
1) someone as obviously true to gaming as yourself likes, collects, modifies and paints them and
2) they are perfectly irreverent towards anyone too stuffy to acknowledge someone else's figures.

I mean if they are gaming with you Lady Smith then they must surely realise that you are a TRUE gamer who has gone to the trouble of turning completely unexpected "toys" into painted and modified gaming pieces. Hooray for you!

They might make me laugh but they keep me happily smiling too! Even though I am feeling a bit despondent today because I have just missed out on attending my country's (Australia) largest wargame's convention.

I will keep my fingers and toes crossed for Ral Partha. Ah.....fond, fond memories.

Ghost Miniatures/Old Glory Miniatures? Maybe that's wherein my ignorance lies. I didn't realise they also had a fantasy range but that could also be because I am a total "historicals" geek.

Anyway I still think your pic is super cool and I wish I had a gorgeous figure with beautiful eyes like her in my collection. As exquisite as Lladro

Ciao bella (figurina too),
xoxo,
Roxanne.

That's sad Roxanne, - not being able to go to that wargaming convention.  I can very much sympathis with your disappointment.

A good many of the Lego and Playmobil and other toy figures I modified were down on their luck toys purchased cheap from somebody's toybox clearout.  The Elf army was different though because most of them were purchased new and I obtained a lot of special custom pieces from companies like 'Brickarms' that make all manner of armour and weapons especially for folk who wargame with Lego.  A bit expensive, but I feel the final result was worth it.
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi201.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa276%2FSianelleofavelorn%2FWarhammer%2FlegoMINIFIGURE_S3_elf.jpg&hash=865ccdc10bab075d4e045a0e2b046ee45f52cc87) (http://s201.photobucket.com/user/Sianelleofavelorn/media/Warhammer/legoMINIFIGURE_S3_elf.jpg.html)

It was a lot of fun making clothing and armour for Playmobil 'klickies' from scraps of leather and metallic punchings and other bits and bobs.  Making Hobbit feet and heads from sculpting putty and putting hair intended for doll making on both feet and heads.  Most of the weapons came from the old Fisher Price Imaginex castle series (more toybox clearance buys) and of course quite a lot of the Imaginex castle toys were perfect for toy box wargaming.  I think I have three of the Imaginex giants which I think are pretty darn impressive and waaaaay cheaper to buy second hand than GW's giants.  The only Imaginex figure which eluded me was the Centaur which was only available in the final set of the series and is quite rare.
