And News4 has learned that police were called to the same area about a half-hour before 21-year-old Zella Ziona was killed Thursday. They were responding to the report of a group of people fighting, and one person being hit with a stick."

Very troubling that the family member sourced in the article asked the reporter misgendered the victim and asked the news outlet to deadname her. Even more troubling that the news outlet agreed.
Looks like even after her murder, her family wouldn't accept her identity. Maybe they didn't know better, but the reporter covering the story should have.

"Police say 20-year-old Rico LeBlond shot and killed Zella Ziona, whose legal name was DeAndre Smith, on Oct. 15, because Ziona "began acting flamboyantly towards LeBlond and greatly embarrassed Leblond in front of his peers," according to charging documents obtained by CBS affiliate WUSA."
