Title: Would anyone read this novel?
Post by: soaringPhoenix on October 18, 2015, 11:22:45 PM
For nanowrimo, I've decided to win this year. My book is going to be called "Brothers in Binds," and it's about a transgender "conversion therapy" camp. It's going to be funny in parts, but with a healthy amount of ~feelings~.

My main character is named Jack, and he is a 19y/o ftm from London. His parents were never very accepting of him, which caused him to rebel against their parenting. Drugs, drinking, risky sex etc. After a major, life threatening incident, Jack's parents decide to send him to an (illegal) conversion camp against his will, believing that his gender is causing all his problems.
There he meets other trans people around his age, and the book centres around his experiences with the other characters. I hope it has a happy ending, but so far I'm not sure.

Would anyone read this when November comes?

I'd read it.

That said, I wouldn't write this for anyone other than yourself. Publishers prefer novels in the 80-100K realm. Self-publishing takes an extreme amount of effort, with little to no help. For now, don't worry about audience. Just focus on telling the story you want. Chances are, someone wants to read it.

And, of course, good luck. I'll be rooting for you.

Yes, I would read it. That being said, I only give a book a few chapters if the writing is poor. And my writing isn't that great. I have published a few novels through Amazon and have learned some tough lessons. I made a little money. But it was a fun experience overall.

I'd say, write it. Your audience may be larger than you think. I'd do a lot of research on these religious camps and try to create reality from what you learn. They are terrible things, even for normal cis kids who end up in them.
