My son suffers from gender dysphoria. He is a stealth he said. He would just like to pass for male as that is his gender identity.
Along with this is extreme anxiety, depression associated with the gender body mismatch.
His counselor (an MA) would gladly sign the affidavit so he could at least get his license and birth certificate changed to make. However in Minnesota (where he lives) and California (his birthplace) we need an MD to sign. Also to add to the issues he has thoughts of suicide and anxiety about talking I The phone. He's currently checked himself into a hospital voluntarily as a result. This happened as a result of the gender dysphoria and onset of menstruation.
Since we are in a small town hours from the Twin Cities it's really difficult to find someone to get an appointment with.
Also with the appointments he's already had they have not made much progress. One such doctor he waited months to see only for them to say "oh we don't do that here " (they don't align the affidavits).
The law as I see it is quite vague as to what the requirement is got the MD in order for them to sign.
They also say "we don't prescribe hormones"
This bureaucracy is killing him and the wait is not helping.
The hospital he is in told me straight up they can't help my son with what he really needs, just to keep him safe with cameras and checking him every 15 minutes. But the condescending nurse who's job it is I thought to create a safe environment can't even respect his gender identity and keeps calling him "she, her". When confronted the nurse said "I'll do my best"
Why must the laws, rules and regulations contribute to my son's distress?
He wastes time in a hospital bed not getting help. Wastes money of all involved.
When the solution is fairly simple. Get him the signature and hormones he requires!
How can I help when time and bureaucracy keeps pushing him back?
Welcome to Susan's Place. With 50 states and inconsistent laws, sometimes treatment can be complicated. If you are unable to find a gender therapist, you might try the LGBT center near you and see if they can recommend somebody in your area. When I transitioned things were a bit more complicated. I had to move from Phoenix to Anaheim in order to find medical treatment. I wasn't permitted to alter my legal paperwork until after I had surgery which was around a year of part time cross living and over 2 years of full time living. It is getting better but not at a fast pace.
Instead of the hormones, you might ask them if they can just start the blockers. It's not so much we need the hormones of the opposite gender as we need the elimination of the hormones our body produces. Blocking the production of those hormones can make a world of difference and the advantage is the blockers don't make permanent changes so I wouldn't think there would be as much objection to them.
