Title: Body Fat Measurement
Post by: Deborah on November 05, 2015, 11:18:18 AM
I wonder if anyone has put any thought into this.

If I am using a scale measuring my bodyfat by electrical impedance what setting would be most accurate after 10 months on HRT?  Is it the male or female setting or is the true measurement maybe somewhere in between?

The scale tells me 35% on the female setting which I can't believe is accurate.  Comparing that to a caliper measurement I get about 16% on the male chart and 22% on the female chart.

Comparing the way I look to bodyfat pictures on the internet I don't look like any of those values.  LOL

Maybe HRT needs a few years to work before those values start reflecting reality again.  Or maybe they never will?  I just wonder if HRT ever makes the body composition approach the assumptions inherent in the bodyfat formulas.

The thing with the body fat measurement is that it's always going to be a rough idea, unless you pay to get it properly done.

Apparently, the best thing to use is the calipers, which are a few quid (or whatever your local tokens of value are). I used them for a bit, now I have the flashy scales.

I set myself as female, because my hormones are going that way, but as it's not overly accurate and, like you, I'm having a hard time believing the readings; I just tend to use them as a guide to see how I compare to myself over time, which is, in my opinion, the best way of measuring it when combined with looking at yourself in the mirror and doing the usual measurements....assuming you do the weekly measurement thing, I guess.

I have no idea... My scale says 19% if I set it to male,  and 39% if I set it to female.  This method of measuring is quite innacurate at the best of times. I just kept mine set to male because I couldn't bear to look at 39% every morning.
