Title: Top Surgery Australia
Post by: zolw on November 18, 2015, 05:30:22 AM
First of, hey! I'm new here as a poster! :D

So I'm a genderqueer/genderfluid teenager who lives in Australia. For about 5 years (since the start of puberty) I have gotten an increasingly worse chest dysphoria. It's not SUPER horrible, but it's causing me discomfort all the time and I can't get my hands on a proper binder, though I have tried tight crop tops and layered crop tops but they don't work well. Point is, I would like to have top surgery eventually. I know right now I'm too young and only recently told my mum about this and being genderfluid so she's not very keen to go ahead with it until I'm older in case it goes away, which I'm sure it won't.

Assuming in a few years I still feel like this and want top surgery, is there anyone who has had top surgery in Australia and would be willing to share their experience? I would also like to know the approximate costs, since some places say that insurance covers it all while other say $8000 and anything in between. I've heard of Dr Megan Hassall and Dr Bartholomeusz, and since I live in Brisbane I'm wondering if it would be better to go to Dr Bartholomeusz because of where I live or if it would be worth it to go to Sydney for a while and have Dr Hassall since I've heard and seen good results from her. Also I don't know whether these surgeons allow top surgery for genderfluid people or if they are just for FTM, so if you know if they or other surgeons would be happy to operate on a genderfluid person, please tell me :)

Thanks! :D

Have you ever visited transbucket? perhaps that might be where you've seen the results, it's very good as some people do quote the prices they've paid. I'm not sure about Bartholomeusz, but I know Dr Hassall has accepted non-binary folk but a psychiatric assessment was required. Though I am not going to Dr Hassall now I was interested and I think I got quoted about $6500 on average plus anaesthesia fees which they didn't give me a quote for but I'm not a Australian citizen so I am not entitled to insurance so you could possibly get it for less? I don't know. Hope I was a little bit of help at least

Yeah, I have been on transbucket and seen some good photos, might go on again to look at costs. I've also seen a few YouTube videos of people who have had surgery with Dr Hassall and they look good as well.

I'll be starting psychologist appointments soon, so that should help when I'm allowed to have surgery. Do you know the youngest age allowed in Australia to have top surgery, assuming I get proper consent and approval letters?

And thanks for the welcome! :D
