Title: Laser hair removal cost question?
Post by: an0npr0xi01 on December 04, 2015, 10:05:13 PM
I had, some questions I'm sure a lot other people have about laser hair removal? If you have time to answer it. I'd greatly appreciate it.

Question 1:
According to google its approximately 70-500 dollars, for the average laser hair removal.
Where are people getting this 70 dollars laser hair removal?

Question 2: I've seen loads of in home laser hair removal kits at Sephora? How do they compare going to the clinic? Both in cost efficiency, quality and why?

Question 3: What are some common questions I should ask during a consultation?

Thank you in advance  :D

In regards to question one I believe many are getting  deals through groupon and or are finding a place that just does laser hair removal.

In regards to question 2, the professional quality of the hair removal in a professional shop is far better and strong than anything you will buy retail even from Septoria.

In regards to question 3, I would ask questions in regards to any concerns and needs you have in regards to laser hair removal. If you have any health issues, then any that might be a problem for it may be something to ask. How long will it take to complete the job, the number of sessions, cost, color of hair, the list goes on but you get the idea.

I think those home laser kits are probably more suited to genetic female hair removal - not sure how effective they are against male body hair since it is usually coarser and thicker, especially the bead. The problem with cheap stuff in this department is you usually get what you pay for.

I presume you will be consulting for beard removal? Ask them how much experience they've had with beards in actual hours. Some might say "I've been doing it for years" but maybe have only thirty hours under their belt, or they've had tens of thousands of hours experience with laser but not on beards. You want someone who really knows what they're doing - if the setting is too low it will be ineffective and waste your money, if it is too high it could potentially scar you.

My beard was removed by laser (dark hair light skin) I went to a clinic specialising in hair removal for women with POCS.

Their opinion was that for a person with my (lightish) beard then home lasers were a waste of money. They are essentially for cosmetic hair reduction. Some women with light hair growth may find them useful.

This is also a reason to go to clinics that deal with hairy people rather than a beautician, the difference in laser power used in the different centres is significant.

There is another danger. Hair growth is cyclical. You need to wait about 6 weeks between laser treatment of an area, with home kits people tend to think more is better and repeat laser on the same area, this can result in skin damage rather than better hair removal outcomes.

I paid (I think it was a few years ago) about $AUD300 a session, it took almost 2 years to achieve removal.

Hi all
It is very expansive and then to find out that if you have gray or white hair you need to do electrolysis.

Honestly I don't really have a beard or any excessive growth. To be honest I never really have. I just don't care for what the razor burns do to my face or all the shaving I have to do in a week. Here are some examples of my face I don't know the added information changes much but I thought it might be important. But if I had to just take care of one place I'd want my upper lip done.

Unfortunately laser will probably not be effective on your skin type. Laser focuses on the dark melanin pigment at the hair follicle and destroys it. It works on light colour skin and dark melanin pigment.

You have gorgeous coloured skin and there may not be enough contrast between your natural skin colour and the hair follicle colour.

You are very pretty and have a lovely natural look!

Congratulations you lucky girl!!

Yes, I have to agree with Cindy, I doubt a laser will work for you. You might have to go with electrolysis which isn't cheap. If it's any consolation, laser did not work for me either as my hair was too light.  :-\

So it seems. electrolysis may be the only opinion. But I have the same set of questions for electrolysis and the effectiveness of home kits.

-there are newer types pf lasers. You might ask if they are usable for you. There are special ones which include dark skin.
You might ask around a bit... or phone around... and ask for an honest answer.

-there is electrolysis. You might ask for pain treatment there.

-all at your own risk there are diy electrolysis kits. You might look up some experiences on the internet.

The second alternative should be the preferable one...

You are beautiful by the way.
I like the picture without makeup.

Tria home laser worked great for me, although I guess the effect differs individually.

I'm still working my way through the earlier thread.Since you mentioned the Tria Home laser. I was interested if there has been group discussions about the IluminageTouch Permanent Hair Reduction? I see both of them quite frequently together on websites. But,  IluminageTouch Permanent Hair Reduction advertises its intended for all skin types? But I'm pretty skeptical. But i figure you guys might know more than me.

It looks the same as the one from the link above.

Ratings seem to be ok.

You might look if there are used ones on ebay...

Well in general concerning home devices people report mixed results.
Some are happy, some have few results due to certain hair colours...

if a used one might be obtainable, from a trustworthy person, it might be an idea to give it a try...

diy electrolysis might be cheap but patience and detailed working might be necessary... and possibly its a hassle finding the right settings... as said all at your own risk...

someone recommended getting in touch with one of the manufacturers of lasers...
they sometimes have studios and look for people they can test their devices on...

same possibly for studios having not much experience with people with darker skins...
also at your own risk :)
but it should be professionals there.

Question 1:

You may find $70 for a single laser session, especially if performed on the back of the hands, armpits, or another small area. $70 is a not uncommon price for time-sensitive pricing, too, if it's only a half hour or so. Generally speaking, however, you can expect anywhere between $120 - $300 per session, depending on the clinic, the area treated, and the size of the area treated.

As another poster shared, Groupon.com also has a lot of laser hair removal fire sales. You'll often see ~$250-350 for 6-8 sessions of an area. This can be a great deal, but can also be a horrible trap. This website should help as a guide, if you're interested:

http://alternaluxe.blogspot.com/2013/01/how-to-choose-laser-hair-removal.html

Question 2:
The only worthwhile at-home laser kit is the Tria 4X, from what I've heard (although a handful of people claim success with less powerful machines). However, it will still not be as effective/powerful as professional laser. The reason for this is because professional machines are capable of much higher settings, and some times hair is stubborn enough to require unusually high energy output. The Tria is limited in its output both due to its size and due to FDA limitations.

As for the Tria's effectiveness, the common experience seems to indicate that it only reduces facial hair most of the time, and is more commonly effective on body hair. Some people do see facial hair elimination, rather than just reduction, but it seems uncommon.

The reason that it would be more effective on body and not facial hair is because facial hair is much more coarse and resilient. Laser works by delivering heat to the root of a hair follicle, and there is only so much heat delivered per zap. The more area that the energy in a zap needs to cover, the less power that energy will maintain.

You can think of using a microwave to heat 1 slice of pizza vs. 3 slices of pizza as a weird analogy -- 3 slices take longer and do not heat as evenly, despite being the same material.

If it works for you, the Tria is definitely more cost effective. It does take a lot longer to see results, however, and requires routine treatment (2-3 times a week is the general wisdom I've seen). Professional laser is once every regrowth cycle.

Question 3:

What type of laser do you use?
If the laser does not work, are you willing to eventually turn up the settings for me?*
What settings do you begin with?
How much experience do your technicians have?
Is your clinic medically licensed to perform laser hair removal?

* This can be tricky. I love my clinic, personally, but it's like pulling teeth to get my technician to go higher than 16 joules (I'm at the highest spot size, which only goes up to 20 joules -- and I feel like something in those last 4 has been the difference).

It helps to ask the technicians to help teach you about the settings, but I would never act like they don't know what they're doing -- this can REALLY irritate them and make them put in less effort! What technicians I've had have been fond of me and like to relate their frustrations; #1 almost always seems to be "people who think they know my job better than I do."

Long post is long, but I'm a harlot for thorough information. I always try to be detailed when I share with others! If you like, you can always feel free to PM me, too.

I hope this helped. Best of luck!

Edit: Oh dear, I just realized this is nearly a month late. It was on the front page! Oh well, I hope someone else might make use of it.

Hi All

I have Silver White hair and electrolysis is my only way. It cost me $40.00 US for each hour that I do so I go 2 times a week for and hour each time and have been for over a year. I still have a while to go till they finally get all the hair cycles. I don't have hardly any hair on my upper lip now and that is a big plus as my skin has gotten so much softer from HRT that is can be easy to get cut.
