Title: Anyone had hair transplants before FFS? Did the hairs survive?
Post by: maquillage on December 05, 2015, 08:49:13 AM
To be a little more specific, I'm wondering about the survival of transplanted hairs (that have had time to settle and grow for 6+ months) if you were to get surgery and cause swelling around the area. The surgery in mind is forehead reconstruction WITHOUT scalp advancement and brow lift.

Looking at old threads, most people say hair transplants that were done before FFS is a waste of money, but I noticed the main reason is because they were considering a hairline advancement (which is more cost effective, and the skin w/ hair transplants might be excised away).

If someone already had a successful hair transplant for the corners, would the coronal incision (located a few cm behind hairline) cause the death of the transplant hairs? I read that even non-transplanted hairs do shed after major surgery, including SRS, but they do grow back.

Anyone had experience with this? Where they had hair transplants early on and decided later to do plastic surgery that cut really close to the hairs?

Thanks :)

Hi,

I had FFS in Feb 2004 with a coronal approach and then had three sessions of hair grafting done in late 2004, 2005 & 2006.

In October 2014, I had a revision done to the forehead using the same incision and have lost a few grafts ( 14 months on ) but not too noticeable. The revision was not very successful.

In April next year Facial Team are reconstructing the forehead properly for the first time as it was burred in 2004. They are making a coronal incision further back in my scalp because three revisions using the same original incision would really be a problem in terms of hair loss and other factors.

BUT I do expect to lose some more grafts despite this new incision placement and a few months afterwards I will have more grafts to replace any lost since 2014.

So my advice don't have any hair grafting done until after any coronal incisions have healed.

Hi Paula1,

Thanks for the detailed reply. So it's definitely a risk.

You are welcome honeybun.

Yep it's a risk for sure, so have surgery first and then transplants ... 8)

I vor first hair transplants to create a nice female shaped hairline. Than I got FFS with a hairline advancement. I lost very few grafts and I have a nice hairline now.

I think it depends on your situation. Because I went full-time after FFS it was helpful to have a nice hairline at that time. After receiving hair transplants you look really scary for a few months.

From what I understand about hair grafts, you should lose little of them afterward (if they've had sufficient time to heal). I had my hairline done a couple years ago but I have yet to go in for FFS .......but working on that. I'll have a better idea of how it turns out in mid to late 2017 ;)
