"LOS ANGELES (AP) — Holly Woodlawn, the transgender actress made famous by Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey in their 1970s films "Trash" and "Women in Revolt," has died."
I never realized she was the same Holly as in Take a Walk On the Wild Side by Lou Reed.
That song really made an impact on me when it was released. I have the original vinyl of the album. It came out when I was about 20. I was mesmerized by the lyrics. Had no idea that there was a real "Holly" until this year. It was a period when I was really struggling with my dysphoria and yet it gave me hope that I was not alone. This was in the late 60's.
Thanks to an older sister with a subscription to the Village Voice, I learned about Holly Woodlawn and Candy Darling when I was still quite young. I also have Lou Reed's vinyl Transformer album, and now that I think of it, saw the movie "Trash" as well. . R.I.P. Holly.
Hi NikkiJ ! How strange, I had a subscription to the "Village Voice" while I was in College. One of my professors from NYC used to borrow every issue. This was at a small college in East TX.

LOL, the back of the Village Voice was how I discovered "Lee's Mardi Gras Boutique" (R.I.P. Lee Brewster). I lived about 100 miles North of NYC at the time and would make clandestine trips to the Boutique to stock up on fun attire. ;D
