Title: What do you wear to your therapist.
Post by: Krista? on December 13, 2015, 08:52:30 PM
Just wondering what do you girls wear to see your therapist, guy mode or girl mode or maybe alittle of both. Just a thought. MMMMMM?

Krista,
I just came out to my therapist and wife a few weeks ago, and as I present as male I do with my therapist as well, but I underdress (bra/panties/PH). It seems to get me talking, as I can be pretty quiet. Whatever feels right for you!

Do you have something you WANT to wear to your therapist? I think that can guide you in some way, but honestly I think it is truly what YOU want because they are about YOU.

Ive been thinking of what to wear for a while lol the 28th seems like an eternity.

Will be my first session and its after work lol so my options are limited for now.

Im thinking of femme guy mode, as far as i can go without being questioned at work haha.

Sometimes I dress up a little more femme when I talk to medical professionals for the first time, if I want them to accept me as transgender.

My therapist knows gender, so I just wear whatever I want.  Some days, I'm coming straight from work or something, and I'm in boy mode.  For a while I used to dress extra femme 'cause my therapist was the only safe place for me to do that.

I'm always in girl mode now. To the therapist i wear what i wear to work which is "smart casual". This time a year it is jeans, a nice top, boots and a jacket or sweater.

The first visit to my therapist I was all guy mode and very nervous, as time passes I have gotten more and more relaxed. It's been about 10 months or so. The last few visits I have worn my girl jeans and under dress. But tomorrow I'm thinking about all girl clothes.
I have to keep it conservative though, I still have short hair (in the army) so there is no way I can pass right now. Anyway I have been thinking about it alot, just thought I would share.

I wore what I was comfortable wearing. I was full time coming into the therapy sessions all along so I was dressed as my authentic self Mariah all the way along. Hugs

First few visits were in straight up guy mode, then I slipped into a more andro mode. Something I'd been doing fairly often before starting therapy. Don't remember exactly when but earlier this fall said the heck with it and have been going full on girl mode for months now. Think the change had a lot to do with me finally accepting who I am.

I've always just gone in a t-shirt and jeans. Technically it's guy mode, but given that I have long hair, and I usually have my messenger bag with me (which kinda looks like a big purse), I think it comes off pretty androgynous. At least that's how my therapist perceived it, which is fine by me. I'll admit, I'm still not good at dressing up for anything.

Wear what you are most comfortable in. If you are afraid to present at all in girl mode then wear your most comfortable guys clothes. If you think you can handle it go ahead and wear women's clothing.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to wear at the least my girly sweatpants and a little eyeliner to my therapists tomorrow. The thought makes me excited and happy. I'd say how you present is totally up to you!

I first went in mens clothing for a couple of sessions. Then I started to wear woman's jeans and alternate. I went to her fully dressed I think two times. Was fun and I loved it but it was scary thinking that people may figure me out.

I'm not out so I go presenting male.

As a side benefit its a good test of the therapist/psych. If they have an issue with it, then they are not for me. I've seen 3 so far, over the years, and its never been a problem.

For the first few months I was figuring things out -sort of - so I went in male mode, after that as me ever since.

6 years ago this last October, I started seeing a gender therapist. I think I went to see her in 'boy mode' for the first 2-3 sessions and then when I went to the grocery store en femme (first time) I ran into my therapist! lol. it was random.

From then on, I only saw her dressed as myself ;)

OMG!!! It was an absolutely great feeling to go to the therapist as the real me. She wasn't shocked at all. She did do a double take and had a big smile. I was more open and honest, very relaxed and comfortable. I kept it simple just a purple and pink tie die long sleeve T, V neck , my body breif with small breaat forms ( a small foam rubber ball sliced in two, large A cup) blue jeans and vans sneakers and a black leather jacket. Very comfy. I'm so happy. Just wanted to share.

My schedule worked out such that I usually went in guy mode, because I had to leave straight from work. I did take off early one day so that I could go home and change, and I went in girl mode. It gave me the courage to bring up the hormone conversation again, and she wrote the letter.

It was pretty great, and I'm glad it went well for you as well.

My appts are usually before work so I wear what I wear to work. Usually a skirt with tights or leggings. I've been a couple of times on my day off and went in sweaty with a tshirt and yoga pants right after yoga class.

Krista, Congratulations on your appointment going so well. My therapist had a similar reaction the first time I showed up as the real me. Being the real you is a tremendous feeling. Best of luck going forward on this long road we are all traveling down.

My therapist made a strange request of me when I had been approximately 15 years post-op.  He wanted me to come to a session dressed as male.

That was quite a shock of a request.

Perhaps he wanted to determine how I was progressing or if I had any thoughts of regression or reversion.

Considering that I refused to dress up in a cheap man's suit to satisfy a cousin who was getting married about five years my post-op when she demanded that was how she would only accept me, the therapist's request still seemed puzzling.

Of course, I also declined the counsellor same as the cousin.  Clothes are not my hang-up, but I have no inclination to wear male clothes any more than any other woman.

I've been to my therapist at least twice and my true self. She is very understanding and accepting. She very kind and compliments me often.

Know what you mean.  Not like I can walk into the ship's doc's office or on base support offices in female mode.  Maybe if I get a referral to a civilian doc.

I see my theraphist on a Saturday, which means i can see her in girl mode. I feel more comfortable seeing her that way.

I have to see the Doctor for my hormones during the week, so it is the boy mode i wear at work.

Pretty strange request, especially coming from a therapist.  Sounds like you're trying to piece together what he meant by it.  I suggest you ask him directly to explain what that was about.  He works for you, you don't work for him.  It may be that he is uncomfortable with or out of sympathy with your gender identity.  If that's so, then likely he is not the right therapist for you.

I generally wear boy clothes even though I'm transitioning from male to female. I'm not in any rush and I will once I feel comfortable doing so. But for me, wearing female clothes isn't as much of an issue and my male styles were always kind of androgynous anyway.

I just came out to my therapist. I told her that I was trans and that I would prefer female pronouns and my name Sarah.

But I haven't dressed yet for a session. Only because I go after work, it is only a ten minute walk. So normally I am wearing men's jeans and a shirt.

But the upside is that I pick clothes (men's at least) that I am comfortable in. So that is a good thing.

The way I look at is like this, my therapist and I are still building a relationship together. It will take me a while to fully embrace and feel safe as Sarah with her. But I am looking forward to that.

Do you think dressing en femme will increase my chance or speed up getting my hrt letter?

That probably depends on your therapist and case.  With mine it didn't make any difference at all.  I presented male with a really short haircut at the time and received the letter in three visits.  It seems to me that what the therapist sees in your mind would be more important than what you wear but another therapist might think differently.

I'd say it would be time to see a qualified therapist

Last February I went to my first appointment in girl mode. My therapist gave me my letter the next day. The only time my therapist has seen me as a male has been in pictures I showed her.

I usually go in a nice casual dress and boots. I need the boots because my feet are so messed up from arthritis their the only ones that are comfortable.

From day one I went to therapy "as a girl." My therapist gushed about how cute I looked, so I knew I was on the right track. Now I just am a girl, so I can wear some boy clothes too and still look like a girl. :)

In Philly, one doesn't need a letter for HRT. We have an informed consent model. So for me, the biggest barrier was myself.
