Title: Estrogen and femininity
Post by: MichelleT on October 02, 2007, 07:01:22 PM
Does taking estrogen make you feel more feminine? I don't mean feeling more feminine from having curves and softer skin. I'm wondering if there is a direct connection between the level of estrogen in your body and how feminine you feel.

I think so. I know a few people who have mentioned this.

I have noticed a change myself, so I would say yes. I think from what I am going through and the posts of others the feelings get stronger the longer you're on HRT. I have had such a personality change that the person I knew before seems like someone else.

Opinions and experiences vary widely.

And even for those who report feeling more feminine, it may just be a placebo effect... the estrogen might make someone feel "justified" in expressing their inherent femininity.

I would say that  estrogen can effect your mental patterns.  My friends say I'm very fem now a days.  I know that there have been changes in me and my outlook in life.  But as with everything else, your results may vary.

Estrogens can also cause your muscles to diminish or shrink,so your body movements may also appear more feminine. the Estrogens can also effect your mind so your mannerisms may also appear more feminine.
Like every one else mentioned, It could effect everyone differently. :)

Agreed, It doesn't effect everyone in the same way. People don't change much no matter what drugs or hormones they take and HRT is no exception. I've seen Male to Female's who have been on long term HRT and have the movement, mentality and physical movement of a male lumberjack. I've also seen Male to Female's who haven't even been on HRT who appear extreamely feminine physically and mentally. I think HRT can sometimes reduce muscle tissue but it's not a miracle cure...

A recent study on msn showed that when women have higher estrogen levels they tend to wear more make-up.- google it

Does estrogen make some who is M to F feel more feminine?  I can only reply, "Is a bluebird blue?  Does a bear have hair?"

About 45 days after I started on prescription oral estrogen, *under my doctor's supervision,* I saw the world differently from what it had been.  My face was softening and my nipples were staying hard.  With all of the physical changes and increased and new stimuli, I sure didn't feel terribly male.  Even the way I handled my tableware at a meal seemed different.  I remember these details because they mean a lot to me.

My reality changed back then.  In my opinion, I felt feminine as a lot of my former ways just fell away and were replaced by new ones, thanks to Mama Estrogen.

It only makes sense to me,That if your body is full of male hormones, then you block them and start feeding your body with female hormones, that "some" changes would happen.
It may not work for everyone that way, but according to the science of it all that's what should happen. I have a hard time believing that it wouldn't have an effect on some people at all, even if small changes are happening like the skin texture changing, better hair growth, gaining more fat, emotions changing, whatever. Something is happening. ;)

There are definite effects on the muscle mass if one if taking estrogen as M to F.  The muscle mass overall diminishes.  The muscles also tighten and can be a source of leg cramps.

My own experience has been like being "re-made" in some respects.  The physical is obvious but the mental and emotional for me have been most profound.

Living my life as I do now and as I did before HRT is like looking at a dim memory.  I respond differently to the same stimuli in my daily life.  My anger threshold has gone way up and there is little that upsets me.  I hear myself talk and it is with a different choice of words, closer to standard diction that it was.  If I notice something that is becoming a bad habit I can control it faster and more effectively.  My speech patterns have changed.  I don't sound anything like I once did.  I'm working on training my voice to sound more feminine and it is getting more passable on the phone over time.  I read faces more closely, especially those of other women I encounter when out and about my business.

I am more aware of young children, especially toddlers, and if one gets separated from its parent or guardian, I will try to keep the child next to me until someone arrives to take over.

I smile more and it's from the inside out.

When I have to face a conflict with another woman I am at first reasonable but when the claws have to come out, they do, however, I don't "go for the jugular" unless someone pushes me to it.

My apologies for getting too windy.  My sole purpose was to show some of the myriad of changes, great and small, that have been given to me.  They all are most precious gifts to me and I give thanks to the Great Spirit for them.

No, I've never been able to tell any difference.
