Did you hear the news about Edward
On the back of his head
He had another face
Was it a woman's face
Or a young girl
They said to remove it would kill him
So poor Edward was doomed
The face could laugh and cry
It was his devil twin
And at night she spoke to him
Of things heard only in hell
They were impossible to separate
Chained together for life
Finally the bell tolled his doom
He took a suite of rooms
And hung himself and her
From the balcony irons
Some still believe
He was freed from her
But I knew her too well
I say she drove him to suicide
And took poor Edward to hell
Thanks for sharing. I didn't know that one of Tom's.

Thank you for responding, Joanna! If you know any songs that speak to your gender dysphoria, I would love to listen to them.
Shilo- Neil Diamond
Turn to Me - Lou Reed
She's the One- Ray LaMontagne
Pick up a Gun- Ray LaMontagne
Ugly Side - Blue October
the Wall - Pink Floyd (more a way to work through dysphoria for me)
Close to Normal Sound track(about a mentally disturbed woman and how it effects her family)
I am sure there are more I use but that's off the top of my head. I do work in sound.

One that always speaks to me is The River by Garth Brooks. Listen closely to the words.
This is from the Disney movie Mulan.

Also Guns and Roses, Sweet child of mine.

That song isn't about gender dysphoria. It's about a man who was born with a face at the back of his head including the 'normal' face. I don't know if this is a fictional story or not, but that's a birth defect and he couldn't take it. Therefor he committed suicide. So many of the songs you share in this thread isn't original about gender dysphoria.
Sebby,
The request suggested songs that speak to your dysphoria. That is a fairly individual and personal thing. I am aware that most if not all the songs I listed are not inspired by trans stuff. However, they speak to me when I am experiencing dysphoria. Truth be told, very few people (on or off any spectrum) listen to songs in the original context that they were written.
Just wanted to get us all on the same page.
Thanks,
Joanna

Thanks for explaining. :)
This one isn't about GD but it really gets to my issue of removing the mask, breaking the avatar, and returning to the beginning to find the end.

This brings up an interesting conversation about the nature of art. Art is based on an artist's experience, but someone experiencing the work must project their experience on it, because while art expands our experience, it must also have meaning to us in the present. For instance, when reading Nabokov's "Lolita," or Poe's "Annabel Lee," I am experiencing a different world, and I know most likely Lolita and Annabel have nothing to do gender dysphoria, but I have always projected my gender dysphoria on the motif of the unattainable female.
I apologize. In my initial post, I should have asked for songs that speak to your experience of gender dysphoria, in order to convey the broad concept of which I am asking for examples.

She seemed dressed in all of me, stretched across my shame.
All the torment and the pain
Leaked through and covered me
I'd do anything to have her to myself
Just to have her for myself
Now I don't know what to do, I don't know what to do when she makes me sad.
She is everything to me
The unrequited dream
A song that no one sings
The unattainable, she's a myth that I have to believe in
All I need to make it real is one more reason
I don't know what to do, I don't know what to do when she makes me sad.
But I won't let this build up inside of me
I won't let this build up inside of me
I won't let this build up inside of me
I won't let this build up inside of me
A catch in my throat choke
Torn into pieces
I won't, no!
I don't wanna be this...
But I won't let this build up inside of me
I won't let this build up inside of me
I won't let this build up inside of me
I won't let this build up inside of me
She isn't real
I can't make her real
She isn't real
I can't make her real
So there aren't many songs about gender dysphoria, but it seems like there are songs I can relate and that can convey the feeling of gender dysphoria in some way. My list is pretty varied, but somewhat dark. In no particular order.
1. Hey You--Pink Floyd
2. Car Radio--Twenty-One Pilots
3. Fade to Black--Metallica
4. lux Aeterna--Clint Mansell
5. Paralytic States--Against Me!
to be continued...

I've seen this 100 times, I have two girls 7 & 13, and never realized. Of course I did, but did not. I guess my role is dad kept me from it.

Ignorance by Paramore. That one really speaks to me, even if it's about something else. I really should try to find out.
"She" by Wolf Alice. The video especially.

While the enter album "Transgender Dysphoria Blues" by Against Me! is one of great personal meaning and broader cultural significance, the title track really hits home for me and touches on many of the dysphoric feelings and situations I have experienced (and still do) throughout my own transition. I find this album highly relatable. Here is a live version of one of my favorite songs from it, "True Trans Soul Rebel", with backing vocals by Miley Cryus.

I'll probably get banned for this, but....
King Missile: "Detachable Penis."
Of course, since I think a woman's shape is awesome, and have since I was ... 5 (?) - I thought it would be awesome if I could retract all the nasty stuff hanging out of me, and get that nice, smooth front.
So the song speaks to me... Although it IS weird.
I could also see it talking to FTMs for similar reasons, and the end makes more sense in that vein...

Was not familiar with that. I love it, thanks for adding that one.
You're more than welcome. The video is the predecessor to "Blush" where the same actor takes over Ellie's role in the video (both songs were released on the same EP). They're an excellent band and well worth checking out.
Are there any songs that are actually about GD at all?

The majority of Against Me!'s album Transgender Dysphoria Blues. For sure.
It's an oldie, mid-90s?, but this always felt pretty on point to me, way way before I'd ever admitted anything to myself, I strongly resonated with the first line:
"Being a boy's like sucking on a lemon"

This song definitely always spoke to me. I was in my early teens when I first heard it on the radio, and it wasn't exactly a shining beacon guiding me forward, but it did make me feel better. I was raised so fundamentalist and usually in such small towns that anything implying that bodies could even be talked about was a big deal.
I hate to say it but my first thought upon reading this question is "Sex Changes" by Amanda Palmer. I like her music but that song hurt my feelings.
For me personally, working through my gender stuff was helped by a bazillion bands in the 80s when a lot of popular straight musicians were flamboyant and in the 90s when a lot of popular straight musicians were fighting against cultural norms. Of course a lot of "straight" people were gay but we didn't talk about that back then.
I honestly can't think of an important song that specifically talks about gender stuff off the top of my head, other than brief mentions by Lou Reed or by punk rockers trying to shock or demonstrate street cred.
"Lady Godiva's Operation" and "Candy Says" by the Velvet Underground are both explicitly about MtF gender dysphoria. The first one is quite brutal, so you'd have to be in a very good place to listen to it. "Candy Says" is about Candy Darling.
Myself, "My Body is a Cage" by Arcade Fire is kind of anthemic.

The Peter Gabriel cover is the one that I love...though I thought I loved it because I was unhappy with my boy body being in a sorry state health-wise. Turn out I may have been a little off the mark... ;)
Against Me has multiple songs about dysphoria in their album Transgender Dysphoria Blues.

You're absolutely right. That's about Edward Mordrake, an English nobleman with a secondary face located on the back of his head. He committed suicide in the mid-20's.

Laura Jane Grace said that a number of Against Me songs prior to coming out were about GD. Specifically she mentioned the songs "Disco Before the Breakdown", "Tonight We're Going to Give It 35%", "Ocean".
She also said the most of the songs on the album Searching For a Former Clarity were about GD aside from the songs that are overtly political.
"Unsubstantiated Rumors Are Good Enough For Me (To Base My Life Upon)" Sounds like it
could be about GD, but it might be about a break up like many of the other songs on "As The Eternal Cowboy."
