Title: 35 years and older hormone results
Post by: EmilyClark on January 15, 2016, 11:02:53 AM
I know age has an affect on transition and was wondering how people around my age and older were making out? I'm 37 and have been on hormones for 7 weeks but haven't really noticed anything yet. Now I know this is a very long process and I'm not getting worried yet, but was just curious how other ladies my age were affected. Majority of pictures and videos that I have found are from girls under the age of thirty. Thanks

It is true to say that the longer you wait, the lesser are the results .. however it is untrue to say that transwomans over 30's arent getting enough result to pass.

There is many older transwomans here in Susan's that will share experience with you.

I started at 43 and am 45 now. I've very happy with how I turned out, I pass everywhere I go, which is way more than I expected. Since going full-time I haven't been misgendered. But with that being said. It's up to your individual genetics. There is nothing set in stone that says because it happens for one person it will happen for you.

Here's a before/after pic.

Age ain't nuthin but a number baby.

I'm 37 years old and rockin' it.

I don't think the difference from mid 20s to early to late 30s is all that big, probably not even early 40s either. Puberty is done, bone growth is done and hormone levels have more or less stabilized. What is left is the genetic lottery.

Teens and very early 20s for sure as you are still growing but even some people who start at say 18 can have passing problems.

I have more breast growth than some younger trans women, for example, even those who are dosed higher than me. It comes down to my genes, especially my mom and her family.

Really, genetics is what matters the most.

Also, 7 weeks is nothing. After 7 months and no development I would be worried.

Your doctor started you out on a low or full dose? A lot of docs prefer to go low and slow.

I have seen many transitioners in 30s and 40s who didn't expect too much to happen and were nicely surprised with amazing results.. and I have seen many who started at 20 with unreasonably high expectations and were very dissapointed after they only got very subtle changes in few years.

Hi Emily

I started Hormones when I was 56 I'm now 58 and yes they work well it just take time.  Remember Rome was not built in a week. Here are some timeline pictures that will show you the effects over time. Here is the link

Ahhhh my post disappeared.

I started at 40 and went full time a few months later because I was hardly ever passing as a guy anymore. It is genetics though. For me it turned out that my body was barely producing any T and I never knew it until I got the bloodwork done for HRT. I had less T in my system than my mother did.

michelle666,

It's remarkable how much personality and character comes through in the photographs.  Looking at your before and after shots, it's clear how much happier and how much more at ease you are now.

For everybody else: Look at those before and after shots.  Which version of michelle666 would you rather have as your next door neighbor?

My T was low as well. I had loads of problems conceiving and my voice was high until my late teens. The only thing I got was loads of body and facial hair but my cisgender brother is way hairier than I am.

Never really had too much body hair and my facial hair didn't start coming in until I was 30, but by the time I started laser, it was full enough that it was a necessity. That's also when my voice started to drop.

I hope that age is just a number because I'm 37 and I am starting hormones very soon. My Endo appointment is on the 21st of this month.

I'll be 34 in march and just started HRT a few weeks ago. I'm told I look much younger than what I am (They're probably all lying to me :P). I'm also a member of the low T and little body hair club. It's probably a genetic lottery really. A friend of mine started at 42 and passes with no issues at all so. I think passing also depends more on your overall presentation than just looks.

I'm in my early 30's and I seem to be doing just fine :) I didn't really notice until around 11 months HRT, then it was just BAM! 7 weeks isn't long at all, give it time  ;)

I started HRT at age 62. My endo is amazed at my breast development. I'm up to a B cup and my butt and thighs are definitely "girly" looking. The women in my family typically are large breasted. But as we all know, YMMV. A trans woman friend told be my breasts at 18 months were much bigger than hers after 6 years.

So yeah, there is hope for all you older girls!  ;)

Your never too old and genetics play a bigger role than age when you transition after puberty.

I started HRT at 43 now at 45 I blend for cis all the time and pretty much have since I went full time at 3 1/2 months on HRT.

I'm another one starting at 43. I don't think it's ever too late to start. I'm also discovering that results from HRT depend on a lot more than your age. Starting younger doesn't mean you will come out ahead. Like some others said, I started off with high estrogen levels and median level testosterone, so that might be a part of my nice progress at only a month and half into my HRT? I'm already having some nice breast development. I've always looked younger than my age and I'm just looking younger and younger as it progresses because of the changes in my skin. As they always say, your mileage may vary :)

I started transitioning at 50 and I believe me I looked my age. I'll spare you the before picture  :o

26 months of HRT have resulted in what you see in my avatar pic. People have told me that I look in my early 40s. I'll take that (i'm 53).

I have never been misgendered and I seem to attract no attention as i go about my day. I think that HRT has done quite a bit for me, and changes are still happening.

Started at 38, low dose, transition dose at 39 and super happy at 40 (now). I probably have another 6 months before I hit a cumulative 2 years on a full dose.  I'm full time now and pass/blend with no problems at all.  YMMV but age isn't as much the factor as we all think.

After looking at so many of you beautiful ladies and seeing where you started from truly gives me hope. I am still a bit weary because each one of us is different and will see different results but I am a lot more hopeful. Thank you

Hi, I started HRT at the age of 34 and I am very happy with my results. However, results could vary from one woman to another.

HRT is not a magic pill babes, you have to learn how to dress and groom yourself properly (i.e. skin care and make-up)
along with training your voice and mannerisms.

HRT is only a small component of transition - take the holistic approach and I am sure you'll be happy regardless.

Good luck girl. But remember, the biggest change is inside you. Getting to live an authentic life is priceless and for many of us it is our inner beauty that is finally shining through.
Self acceptance is sexy as all get out and that is what you are seeing in many of us and you need to set it free in you.

About 1-2 months prior to HRT

I started at 35.  I looked more or less like this (though I think that picture was made when I was 33 or something)

About first 6-7 months there were very subtle changes, but I pretty much looked like the same person but something was still going on. For the first time I was gendered female around 9 months when I looked like this.

I am coming close to 38 and it is about 32 months on HRT and now I look like this.

That's pretty much it.

At age 37 I started a low dose for about six months. I'm now 38 and have been on a normal dose for about 8 months, and I'm just now starting to feel like the real changes are happening.  I'm almost a b cup, and even my hips have grown a bit...a very little bit, but I'll take it!

This thing is a marathon for sure. It's frustratingly slow sometimes, but other times I look back and see how far I've come in the last 14 months.  And April is exactly right. Hormones are a small part of transition...and not one we have any control over.

I started HRT at 41.  I'm now 43 and am very happy with my results 21 months in.  Here is a comparison of me from the summer of 2012 (I was 39) on the right and last week on the left.  :)

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1341.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo759%2Famazinglyautumn%2F2012_2016_zpsovusj0gu.jpg&hash=1c9865b96176ca2a745bd27b98c3bc9fddea60f2)

Like others have said:  HRT is only part of the whole transition process.  Attitude/confidence is a big part of it too along with learning how to present in public.

For the medical component so far though I couldn't be happier with my results.

I'm 37 and have been at it for about 18 months.  The results are not as dramatic as those on a 25 year-old, but you've got to factor in age when comparing: more bone growth in face, and older skin generally.  That said, I went from a very masculine-looking person (e.g. my trans-masculine friends would ask me for pointers and advice) to someone who generally passes.  YMMV :P

So what do I do?  Be a hypocrite and post without pictures... unacceptable.

My face is clearly over there  <---

My body is down there vvv

I took my face out of this pic because it was before I had time to really get ready and I looked completely awful.

HRT really works, post ~35~ (b00b jobs help, but the rest is natural)

Cute butt  :D

@Jalynn

It is not that much about size (cause there are man boobs too which are kinda acceptable for the view of general public - but still can look gross), but size or areolas... Once areolas start growing there can be no doubts that we are talking about female breasts which is an extremely sexual object and should be hidden as much as possible :D

I worry about how HRT will work for me.  I'm 41, and considering transition, but am still working through therapy.  Part of me wants to rush against father time, but my head says to let things happen naturally.

But I'm also scared how I will look post-HRT, would I need tons of surgery to pass in the face.. I don't know..

I'm still in the process of losing weight.  I'm at 210, down from 231.. I'd like to get to under 180 before HRT.  Everything moves at a snails pace, I guess I just need to focus on things I can control for time being.  Weight loss, Therapy, etc.

Here are some pics of me in dress, and just my normal male face.

Hi Gia, I started this thread because I'm 37 and just starting my transition. From what I have seen hear has given me so much hope. There are just so many beautiful women on here that have gone through this from teens through 60's+. You just need to do what makes you happy and the rest will fall into place. I would recommend starting laser hair removal on your beard though. It helped me a lot mentally to no longer have that shadow all the time. Just set small goals and you will be fine

Well, one can never know. Only You can evaluate Your facial features and consider how much there is bone structure and how much is skin and muscle tissue. I was afraid I would never pass due to facial features (my face was decribed as quite masculine) and shoulders and upper bulk. It turned out, a lot of those masculine features were based on developed facial muscles and once they melted away (granted, it took quite some time) the face looked radically different. Hair removal is a must and skin texture will improve on HRT. As for sizes, I dropped from 52 EU (male large and not due to body fat...) to 38 EU (female medium).

Btw... we had that thread "Transitioning in Your 30-ties" (or something similar to the). I wonder if it's gone because it was quite long and useful :).

how long did it take for the muscles in ur jaw to melt away? I've noticed that my jaw is mainly fat and muscle that my jaw bone is actually very thin.

Hey! You can see some difference in the pictures I posted on previous page of this thread. Pic 1 was about the reference point, pic 2 was about 8-9 months into HRT and it kept getting narrower even afterwards.
I would say with that starting point it took me full 13-14 months to start boymode fails on a regular basis and about another year when I was gendered female no matter what I was wearing.
And it is not that much about thickness or thin-ness of jaw bone as it is about it's angle (whether it is narrow or wide).
