Title: Injection mishap...weird lump?
Post by: FTMax on January 15, 2016, 11:17:56 AM
Hi guys (or anyone else that wants to contribute!),

Wondering if this is not an unheard of occurrence or if I need to see a doctor ASAP.

This week I sat down, iced my leg for about 10 minutes, then injected. When I got the needle about halfway in, I felt some resistance and then my leg muscle spasmed. It didn't hurt. I tried to insert the needle a little deeper and it spasmed again, so I stopped pressing and just injected where it was.

I usually have some pain the day after, but not beyond general soreness. This week, I had to take some pain killers, use an ice pack, and lay down. I have a really high pain tolerance, so this is unheard of for me. I noticed that it was swollen a little bit, and warm to the touch. It wasn't as bad pain-wise the next day, and the swelling/warmth went away, but the soreness carried on through late Wednesday. Today it doesn't hurt, but I'm noticing that there is a section south of the injection site that feels like a knot. I injected about 4" up the leg, and this is maybe 1" away from my knee.

Did I hit a nerve? Something else? It doesn't hurt, and it has gotten smaller since I first noticed it. Hoping I didn't do any kind of lasting damage.

1. If you're nervous, see a doctor

2. I've read of injection lumps here before.

3. If things do go south, can I have your stuff?

Hugs, Devlyn

I'm not nervous! It's just a first, and I'd already been having a stupid period of injection anxiety so it made it worse. And of course you can have my stuff! You have to feed my dog though.

Actually, you don't look good. Better give me the dog now.  ;D

FTMax, if in doubt always call your doctor. Now having said that what is important to remember are two things. How long the discomfort and lump stay after and how does the tissue around the site look. If it is red, then see a doctor. If the spot is still tender to the touch and is a squishy lump, then see a doctor. I hope that helps. Hugs

I have had a couple injections over the years that seemed to 'go bad'...  I get a sensitive, swollen lump on my thigh and it gets red/purple with a little heat associated with it.  These also have bled more than my usual injections (which is hardly a drop). After 5 or 6 days it seems fine.  The first time it happened I, of course, thought I might lose my whole leg to gangrene or something  :o  but, alas I am fine.  I would monitor the heat and redness and if that gets worse, maybe make a trip to a doc.  I seem to have no lasting effects from the few times it has happened, and I am sure it will happen again at some point.  Still not sure why it happens, but I think it is an injury to a vessel...  Yeah, it hurts.

Thank you ladies and Trace :) There's no discoloration, and not squishy so I'll assume it's okay. I'll mention it to my doctor when I see her next. It's a lot better than it was earlier this week, so I'm not too worried about it. Just hoping it goes away soon! It's a little disconcerting.

Here's your new dog, Devlyn. He likes pizza and naps.

My friend who does Subq shots gets lumps. It's possible you are injecting into the same exact spot as before.
