Title: Just got with a vocal coach
Post by: Emily-G on January 16, 2016, 11:32:21 PM
Hello Everyone,

So I'm trying to be pro-active with my plan to transition. Currently, I would like to be fully transitioned by February 2017 which should be about 1 year on hormones.

In the meantime, I signed up with a local vocal coach that says she teaches transwomen to feminize their voice.

This is very important to me, and surgery is kinda out of the question right now.

Any thoughts on this?

Sounds good to me - I know I benefitted immensely from some vocal coaching. Essentially it will make your voice softer, change your intonation and vocal range. You won't be able to speak in a high pitched voice but you'll still sound more feminine. She should also be able to teach you how not to damage your vocal cords which is always a risk if you don't speak properly. Good luck!

I'm excited!

I just wasn't sure if this was an abnormal process to transitioning.

I'm having an initial consultation with one at the end of this month. I've not even decided if I'm ever going to fully transition, but I want to know where my voice is at now, and what might be possible.

Not abnormal at all!  Voice therapy can do wonders and while every voice has different limitations you'll no doubt learn a lot and make sounds you didn't think were possible.  Best of luck!

Voice therapy is helpful for issues like resonance and prosody. For straight pitch not so much.

That's simply not true.  There are numerous exercises focused on expanding range in both directions.
