Title: How long does it take for female fat cells to form?
Post by: Angélique LaCava on January 28, 2016, 11:56:20 PM
Like after starting hrt. I'm trying to decide how long I should wait before gaining weight cause honestly after 2 months of hormones I gained 7 lbs n it's like I'm always hungry.

a few years at best, depends on genetics mostly.

You might start seeing changes in your first year but it will be subtle. It takes awhile before there's a noticeable difference. This is one of the changes that takes the longest.

People are different.
Just give it a try and see where the fat goes.

Its very well possible on boobs too.
You might think about bioidentical progesterne ... it might help there, with rounding.

You could look up a video called
INCREASE BREAST SIZE  FAST & NATURAL by Amitabh Pandit

"Amitabh Pandit is the nutrition guide to kids, teens and adults. He is a regular contributor to News Dailies like Hindustan Times and Times of India. He is the author of three international bestsellers and one national bestseller on nutrition."

he talks about nutrition that helps a more female distribution...
just be careful with hormones and supplements he recommends because you have that already via hrt.

He also talks about different kinds of fat, some of which are more likely to help a round figure instad of going to the belly.

He recommends avocado oil for example, and other foods that might help a better fat distribution.

According to ye ol interweb. 10% of your fat cells die a year in the body, with a total lifespan of 8.5 years.

According to Wednesday, she has posted 8 months.

From what I can glean from this is that every 8 months or so, 10% of your fat cells will die off and be repositioned based on your new estrogen road map.

But then again, I could have misinterpreted the information. However, after observing for a while, 10% every 8 months sounds quite reasonable.

This. I think I was wrong. I might misread months for years (ouch! >:(). Looks like the definite lifespan of fat cells is around 8 years. It also looks consistent with what we observe in ourselves. For me, up to the 4th year on hormones there were noticeable body shape changes (and they happened slowly over time), so that lifespan looks really reasonable. Got to apologize for my error.

Given that, ideal weight gain would be even slower and it looks like a really nice idea to take it easy.

Yup. Keeping your weight steady can be hard when on hormones. What best works for me is doing several meals through the day in small amounts: I just eat what I need and avoid to get very filled after each meal. I just eat what I need to calm down my hunger and then wait like 2 hours until the next meal.

I would wait at least until being like 8-12 months on hormones to gain weight and after that, I would try not to gain more than maybe 4-5 lbs every year to keep things under control.

I think you are right about the 10% per year but for the question itself , the female cellules start to form the day you start HRT . However, they will fight with male cells until the male one completely die or is simply  genetically stronger then the male one and take over it.

For body fat,  a female usually keep around 20-25 %  for a healthy bodyfat percentage.   If you do it now, some will go in female pattern if you are lucky and some will go in your old male pattern ( belly most likely).

I also just like you gained 7-10 lbs after a month on HRT, like i cant stop eating.   Most of the new fat went to  butt ( omg i love my butt)  but a lot went to belly.  It might not be pretty if you have to much bodyfat on stomach, however at the end result ,   the fat will just redistribute anyway in female pattern because everyday, you burn fat and new one collect according to your pattern.   Just dont go to crazy.. higher then 25% is a pain to lose with no testosterone.

I wasn't eating like crazy from the start. I started eating almost constantly at like 2 weeks. So if our body is craving the food dosnt that mean it needs it to Grow? Cause during puberty ur always hungry.

They form instantly when you eat anything you shouldn't, go to places you don't want, and can never be gotten rid of. :)

You only have so many fat cells in your body, how much fat they store is another topic all together. Until they die off and reform your body will continue to stockpile fat into one of the reservoirs, so to speak. The fat (reservoirs) cells will only reposition in your body when your body regenerates them in its cycle. Hormones being it's road map to position the stockpiles of fat.

Beer math says that in the first 12 months you'd see a repositioning of 10 to 20% of your body fat depending on where your fat cells were in their life cycle when you started on hormones, as there is no way to know where they were at on the arbitrary date they received hormones.

Your mileage may vary comes into play... assuming people who saw quicker fat redistribution were closer to the beginning of that life cycle when they started hormones, and those with slower results were further away.

Your body was used to functionning with T  and testosteronne helps a lot with fat burning.   Supressing the T and increasing the E   favorise the gain of weight   so someone  that continue to eat like a men ( eat until you are full) when on hormones will stack fat .  Your stomach need to get used to eat less , it takes a couple week to eat VERY RIGHT before the craving go  away (  if only i could resist to chocolate) .

What wednesday said is the best solution and is how my diet is made.   Eat less but more frequently , it is killing the craving symptoms.

I noticed VERY quick changes in fat deposition and redistribution on HRT, within months (4-5). Estradiol should keep the weight off the waist while promote weight in other regions like glutes, thighs, breasts, face making body softer looking, more curvaceous. The addition of progesterone might increase the deposition of fat but is supposed to counter water retention from estrogen. Some other forms of progestogens might adversely affect insulin, exert significant glucocorticoid effects, increase water retention which might cause weight gain, like cyproterone acetate or medroxyprogesterone acetate, for instance.

Eating the wrong foods will also cause fat to accumulate in the belly. Insulin is a very important hormone which contributes to this. What stimulates insulin? Carbohydrates such as pasta, bread, beer, cereals, even very sweet fruits like banana or pineapple, sodas, juices, potatoes, corn, etc. Fat, on the other hand, does not have such an effect (negligible) on insulin and keeps you more satiated. Saturated fats aren't harmful, this has not been demonstrated by science. Modest intake of carbs while eating as much protein and fat as you want may help you. Keeping stress at a minimum is also important as this can, over time, increase fat accumulation in the belly. Eat with pleasure, don't worry too much but try not to overdo it with carbs.

Lowering carbs somewhat will also have positive effects on your energy, health, cardiovascular parameters.

Personally, I noticed that on estradiol alone, I'm often hungry. Adding progesterone reduced my hunger significantly. The reason I think is because it calms me and prevents eating to relieve stress/anxiety.

I've seen considerable re-distribution in a year. Am I a lucky outlier on this? I've had pretty rapid breast growth too. I'm beginning to wonder if there is something genetically strange with me.

I have lost 26 lbs since starting HRT in June 2015, should I be trying to cycle gain weight at this point? I am about 6 ft tall and weigh 177 lbs right now I don't want to get over 180 and was hoping to get to a range of 165 to 170.

do what you think is right angelique. from the pictures ive seen of you recently you had quite a nice waist already.  Just maintain this and you will be fine.   There isnt really a special method that IS the solution..  Your body need food to function and you need to eat if you want breast growth and fat redistribution... If you are to lean... welll there is just muscle and bones there.. you cant expect changes .

from experience, womans are losing a lot of breast size when they get lean for bodybuilding competition. same thing apply to us.

anyway my 2 cent.

Nature 453, 783-787 (5 June 2008)

"Here we show that adipocyte number is a major determinant for the fat mass in adults. However, the number of fat cells stays constant in adulthood in lean and obese individuals, even after marked weight loss, indicating that the number of adipocytes is set during childhood and adolescence."

So, it seems from this study and other studies that even though fat cells (adipocytes) die and regenerate, the number of fat cells remains constant during adulthood, is set before adulthood, is tightly regulated AND the size (volume) of fat cells determines how slim or not you are. What determines this, for the most part, is sex hormones, growth hormone, cortisol and insulin.

It sounds like you're being impatient with everything. Things take time with HRT. There are no quick solutions. Do you see a therapist? I think one may be quite helpful.

Well, neither we (mostly) or your therapist (probably) are doctors. Ask your endo if they know.
