Title: "Name" Questions
Post by: LUCIF3R on February 04, 2016, 03:10:51 AM
Okay, so again me after long long time of absence.

I write a blog, run a channels on YouTube. So I got few times this question: What was your name before?
I dont want to answer so I wrote I dont want to answer xD

BUT!

What do you think? Is it better answer than that? Maybe you have own logically explanation to make "dont want" into "dont want - expand super cool version".

Im curious what statement you would create if was a public artist, writer, actor or smth like that.

(Sorry for my eng - kinda rusty)

So, I have always been fascinated with spy's. Movie's, books, non-ficational stories, whatever. I almost went into to counter espionage as my MOS in the Army, before deciding to back out of the whole thing. I wanted a career path into the CIA. One thing I read about name changing (not sure where) is to have it closely related to your name somehow.

E.G. Lance Kenneth McConnell ( not my name ) that could equal many things but simple would =
masculine - Lawrence Kennedy McCain

Feminine - Constance Kendra McFolly

the purpose is to have a name that resembles your name closely enough that you don't hesitate to answer when it is spoken.

However, we are not spies we are transitioning. While this may come in handy if you're not overly concerned, you may want to put some thought in your future name.

I initially went with the above method.

Wesley= Leslie (hence my screen name on the site)

after answering to it on this forum and others I didn't feel it suited me. I then went with a name that I had always loved. Which was Delilah. I remember even when I was a child I thought that was the most beautiful name in any story I had ever heard. This still in a way stays true to the method. It is ingrained in my mind, also unique. If I am dressed or in chat somewhere I will answer to Delilah without thought. I believe as temporary as a cover ID name relation is proper, not so much as the name you will eventually put on all your documents.

Now I just wish I could change my screen name lol

I don't answer that question. It is rude and inappropriate.

i agree with this. it also puts that thought into peoples minds and they might "slip up" and start using it, or calling you by the wrong pronouns, etc. idk why but something just triggers in peoples brains when they find that stuff out and the misgendering, etc. just happens. it's like when someone who first finds out you're trans, sometimes they end up using the wrong pronouns after using the right ones for so long. it's like the are able to "see" the "feminine" parts of you now or something.

Yeah its not really their business to know. A situation where it would be a good idea to tell people your old name is if some family is using it and you want your friend/partner to be prepared for when they are around those family members.

My name was Michelle, so I don't really have a problem telling people since it's so close to Mitchell.  However, if you want to be amusing, you could start answering everyone who asks with a different, absurd answer.  AKA:

Them: Dude, what was your name before?!?!
You: It was Scarlettahera.  If I was a boy they were going to name me Rhettbutlyr.

Them: whuts ur birth name????
You: K'abbigayl'sean the Third.  It's a family name.

Them: ur real Name is what?
You: Ruth-Esther-Magdalene.  My mom says it's the Trinity in women.

You're allowed to just say you won't answer without explanation.

I wouldn't answer, I don't know why I should. It's not my legal name and even when it technically was it never felt like my real name.

I think this thread is more for FtMs but I thought I would chime in.

As far as given names, I guess I am lucky in that regard.  My legal name is Terence. All my life I have gone by Terry. When I was a kid, I never liked my name. It wasn't a rugged, masculine name, I felt.

Them:  What is your name?
Me: Terri

Them: What was your name before?
Me: Terry

It has kind of worked out, lol!

~Terri

Using a persons dead name is very rude. I think we need to be careful where this thread is going guys.
