"A surreal anti-trans bill has progressed in Washington state – which could enforce 'genital-checking' for public bathrooms."
Well, it's all about supporting good and wholesome family values. See:
QuoteWashington state Republican Graham Hunt, who has led the charge in the anti-trans movement, was recently forced to resign after it emerged details of his military career had been fabricated or embellished.

These people are like one big Saturday night live skit. A sane person would hardly believe they are serious, but scarily they are.
I know. A few months ago the primary lobbyist against LGBT in the Family Research Council was exposed as a child molester.

I'm actually getting a little tired of these sensational headlines. No one has suggested any such checking. In fact it seems clear to me that the people proposing this legislation intend it as a way to exonerate business owners who are accused of harassment when they tell trans people they can't use the proper rest room.
These headlines have the effect of lulling our community into thinking these laws will be seen as ridiculous, which, given the success so far of this one, is obvious not a majority viewpoint.
They're not going to get women to drop their pants, they're going to ask people they suspect are trans to carry a 'proof of surgery' letter.
Imagine how that would go down if they accidentally ask a genetic woman to show her proof of surgery letter. Still ridiculous.
I want to know what they intend to do when they stop a pre-op trans woman that has an F on her drivers license but of course is not carrying the required proof of surgery - are they going to make her drop her pants on the spot? Are they going to call in a gender examiner for the job? And does the hapless female have to hold it for an hour or two until the gender examiner gets on site?
And what about trans kids? Isn't that molestation to require a genital check from someone under 18?
This whole thing is ludicrous. I envision all kinds of lawsuits and finger pointing when this goes bad, such as when cisgender women get cornered and accused of being in the wrong bathroom.
In a nearby county there was just an outbreak regarding a Republican on its legislative board. He wanted genitalia checks for the school restrooms specifically because he thought people will fake being transgender, walk into the opposite gender bathroom, and rape someone. Seriously? Anyone can do that without cross-dressing. Any shouting for help will be heard equally as loudly. Doesn't make sense to me. At least his proposal was shot down by everyone except for himself. Still nonsense though! Pretty sure this dude got arrested.
Are you sure this is not an SNL skit? I'm not touching this one with a ten-foot pole checker! Silly!

I personally have no issue in family rest rooms as a man or women. Just don't specify that's what they're for and don't make hateful legislation that is also a bit insane. I can't wrap my head around the amount of hate a single party can display and still get votes. When Putin passed bus laws Americans lost their minds. However, when it happens user their own noses the republican constituents agree and make excuses. Smh

Lets keep the discussion civil please and not descend into the rhetoric that transphobic people use against us. We are better than that.

I expect the way it will work is that the bar/restaurant owner will tell you you can't use the ladies' room. If you have some sort of documentation, you show him. Otherwise he's within his rights and if you object, he'll ask you to leave his establishment (which is probably what he wants anyway).

I imagine they're aiming the law at the obviously non-passable. They're thinking that business owners will want to avoid conflict if there any doubt.

We always have, right? There's definitely a "passing privilege".
I usually hate reading comments about articles on facebook and such but people seemed overwhelmingly against this. Seemed 99.9% of women would rather pee in the same bathroom as trans girls than flash their junk.
Why do we have gender specific restrooms at all?
Why not require individual restrooms that anybody can use?
Also, I do not trust anybody who holds political office, Republican or Democrat or Whatever.

A wide majority of people don't mind them.

A wide majority of people don't mind them.
A wide majority of people don't mind a lot of things, yet they aren't the best. I mean, look at healthcare in the us, that's all split up but people don't mind. But its still arguable that it would be better as one...
Not starting a political topic, just an example off the top of my head.
As for bathrooms specifically, its just been around so long. Why don't they remove things in APIs sometimes, and only deprecate them instead? Because its been around so long that the change would be too difficult. So instead, they offer up the new method and leave support for the old method running anyway.
In other words, a transition to universal bathrooms would only happen as an option at this point in time. Just a random thought.
Maybe it would be different if we lived in utopia...
PS I am horrible at explaining *facepalm*

And how are they going to authenticate such a letter? Hell anyone can write a convincing letter in MS word, sign a fictitious Doctor name and even have it notorized.

exactly, that's part of the problem? I've heard of people being asked for 'proof of surgery' at work or in gyms - but I don't think such a thing even exists. Aside from gender recognition certificates, which i imagine are authenticated the same way birth certificates + marriage licences are. I'd rather not have to carry a government issue tran ID card in order to pee tho

Well, I actually do have a "proof of surgery" letter which was accepted by the SSA to change my gender marker on my social security account. So they do exist. Whether the average security guard at a gym could tell a forgery from genuine, I'm skeptical as well.
