I can usually smell men from five hundred miles away....I have an extremely senstivie nose, but yes, men smell differently, much differently from us, girls.

Hmmm...I wasn't necessarily talking about "cologne" smell but natural masculine smell :D ;)  But if you would like my personal opinion, I like Armani for men; it has a lemony scent, very subtle though....

Well before I formally transitioned I switched from a girls deodorant to old spice (which I still use now). Men smell waaay different than girls, and that was definitely the first thing I noticed about myself after starting hormones.

Anyone shower fresh has that shower fresh smell. This is something I pay a lot of attention to. That 'shower fresh smell' is not owned by men or women or others. It is very individual.

That said; Yes. Men and women have different base smells. I agree that it is probably pheromones.

It's the testosterone; it makes the eccrine & apocrine glands to produce more sweat.  Sweat per se is odourless.  Bacteria and chemical  composition is what causes sweat to disintegrate into "masculine smell".

Wearing women's deodorant, in my opinion, surely doesn't help passing.

yeah that is definatly true. mens deoderant has a much stronger smell than womens. i started using mens deoderant yesterday, and i am constantly smelling it everywhere. i like the smell though, im just worried that its very obvious.

I wear cologne.

My top three favorites....

1. Fierce from Abercrombie and Fitch.  Although I can't stand the prices of clothes at this store, this cologne is GREAT and cheap.

2. Dolce and Gabana (sp?)  It's fabulous.

3. Any LaCoste cologne is great.

I used to think Axe and Tag smelled terrible (mostly because the guys in junior high and high school tended to put on a TON of it.) Now I love it (mostly because there are some adorable dudes here who wear it...but not too much!) It definitely smells male -- I can't see a girl wearing that stuff...

Sweat doesn't have much to do with the male smell. Men who have showered still smell like men. It's that women's noses are sensitive to pheromones that men put out. Sure, men smell more due to sweat (and it's a sharper smell), but that's not the basis, that's not why I...women like to put their nose in their neck and breathe deep. It's that wonderful pheromone smell.

Yes, the smells are defiantly different. But I can't describe the difference between the natural smells. However, women's deodorant tends to smell flowery and delicate. It's supposed to have a soft smell. While men's deodorant is a bit stronger and doesn't always resemble something. (Like my sister has rose-scented deodorant) I'm not saying men's deodorant smells more, but that it definitely has a more masculine smell. I don't know if that made any sense.

I never really thought about it that much. I guess you're good at finding things that aren't so obvious.  :)

I guess men and women have different smells but I can never detect them. Sometimes on the tube you get men who smell of sweaty BO which is horrible but most men are not like that thank goodness..

I noticed as soon as I started taking T, animals started reacting to me differently. My neighbour's dog, who is terrified of men, suddenly wouldn't even take a cookie from me. My mother's dog started listening to me (he doesn't listen to women - although my gf is an exception to that. He has the hots for her.)

So there's definitely a change in smell. But a tad of cleanliness means humans won't notice it.

Boys smell different from girls, the further from the shower, the more pronounced.  But that 'real guy' smell is not shower fresh, its that 'worked all day' smell.  Not bad, not locker room rank, but sweat, with a little dirt, some oil or grease mixed in, perhaps that aroma of 'new cut grass' or 'fresh sawdust' as the base note.  And the union guys I work with (craft union) never use any cologne, that's for the cubicle people.  Any guy (or girl either, with perfume) really working, really sweating, ---- working hard physical labor --- knows that stuff don't last, so why bother?

At the end of the day, guys smell like work, because that is what guys are supposed to smell like.  We often go drinking after work (just like office people) and we're drinking in the same bars sometimes, and the reaction is strange.  The guys don't like the smell (it reminds them of the fact that in reality, they are not working, and they should be) but don't dare say anything, and the girls tend to like us all sweaty, dirty, with tools.  At least they are thinking "Gee, that dryer might get fixed at last."

When I think about the 'real guys' I know, and have known - its all about the work.  How hard you can work, how you can be trusted to do the work right (the first time), how little you snivel about it, is pretty much how they measure other guys they really like, admire, and trust.  (and that goes for girls who work with us too - we respect that in them also, which makes them 'one of the guys."  That, and that smell.

before I didn't wear  shirts without sleeves because my muscles were underdevelopped but now it's often embarassing because of smell..and I don't use deodorants..only over my clothes,I would rather take a shower three times a day..deodorant can cause breast cancer even in men..other chanfges on T:nose and fingers are larger a bit, I could eat whole cow for lunch, and I sound like a smoker..

Such a funny question. To be honest I think anything that says "they wash themselves" is a good thing whether it be aftershave, soap, or cologne. There's nothing worse than a stinky man and any good smell is a sign that they won't let you down on the hygiene front.

Yep, you'll smell have guy smell with T. :D

Get a guy deodorant, but not Axe. Axe is gross, and I don't know why guys wear (or sometimes bathe in) it, I always hear other women complaining about Axe and we joke about guys wearing Axe because they are trying to be "cool." Axe sends of message of teenage kid, so, yeah, not a good rep for it. So, yeah, no Axe. Wear speedstick or if you really want something better go with Mitchum (it works and isn't over powering and gross). As for cologne, never over do it and find one that smells good on you (not Old Spice or Aqua Velvet, unless you're a grandpa!)... try something good and sophisticated -- I don't know much about mens colonge, only what I hear from other people, but I hear Drakkar Noir is good if used lightly and apparently is popular again (it's been around forever). I forget the other ones, like CK is popular still, especially if you're in your 20's. Different smells go with different ages. I think there's something called Angel, too, which is also popular, and Cool Water and Alfred Sung.

It's like with women, different smells seem to go with different ages. Like, I'd never wear Red Door by Elizabeth Arden (Grandma smell). My personal fav is Coco Mademoiselle Channel. Great stuff, and it's young but not too young. Perfect for mid 20's to mid 30's.

Always try a sample before you buy. Wear the sample for a day and a couple of times (they give the samples out for free). Scents change according to your body chemistry, and can smell completely different on you than it does on someone else.

I don't think I ever really smelled like a girl... I always seemed to sweat more than other "girls," and I've always had sweaty hands... I hate that. Since going on T, I haven't noticed any difference in scent, but I have noticed a difference in how animals react to me. We have a female rabbit who just had a litter, and my wife can pet the babies with no reaction whatsoever from the mother, but if I get anywhere near the cage, the mother lunges at me. I don't know if they can sense the testosterone or what...

As per deodorant, etc., I use Axe Kilo deodorant, and various Axe and Tag colognes. I'm a cheap guy, I guess. But I agree with Brady... if you have the bucks, get Dolce&Gabbana cologne. It's amazing.

Yeah, they can smell it, even if you can't. It's not infrequent for dogs to be afraid of men and I've heard a number of stories just like Dennis' --  before T, the fearful-of-men dog is fine with you, after, it's afraid even if it's your first shot. Many mares will fawn over men and get snarky with women during certain points in their heat-cycle, though I've not heard any FTMs talk about this happening to them.

im pre-t ftm, but people have always told me i smell like a boy, but i never knew what that was suppose to mean. I've always noticed dogs tend to not like me to much until im around for a while, they always act toward me how they act toward bio guys. I always thought it was because of my voice, but maybe it is my smell. I just recently found out that my t levels are very high for a bio girl...maybe thats why? lol i dont know...just a thought i guess.

I think it does have something to do with hormones.  I have noticed that animals are reacting differently to me since I have been on estradiol.  I am like Tink in that I'm developing a sense of smell for men.  They smell more like 'work'.  You can almost tell what a man does fro a living by his smell.  It is kinda like a musk smell.

Personally I like Old Spice on a man.  I always used it back when.  I also like 'Brute' and 'Joop'.  But they have to be on the right like of guy.  I also like the smell of a man that works with horses or Automobiles.  Something about those smells. >:D

Actually, I read somewhere recently that that is an urban legend.  There was some concern about the alum that was used as an anti-antiperspirant in many deodorants, but the concern was found to be groundless.  Still, if you just don't want to risk it, plain old baking soda works pretty well. I don't recommend it for folks who shave their pits, though, because it's a bit harsh on the skin, but when it's hanging out in the hair (sorry, is this getting too gross?  :D) it still kills most of the bacteria that causes bad odors.

And let me put my hand up with those who say, "Please, please stay away from Axe at all costs!"  That stuff smells worse than battery acid.  It literally gives me the dry heaves. *hurks a bit, just thinking about it*

I read a book recently called Heart of the Wolf and it kept mentioning throughout the book sentences like "the smell of him, all male, all alpha" or something like that and I thought "Gee...I guess really tough alpha dudes give off a male smell or something" Lately I've been using Axe body spray, deoderant and soap just to try to cover any kind of "female" smell I might be emitting that I don't know about. Well as I said, for me, its a combination of cologne and natural pheronomes. Usually, his cologne smells essentially the same on him as it does in the bottle. Clean, fresh, appetizing. ~laugh~
Now dont make this mistake; I see my boyfriend and other guys spraying their chests (with their shirts on) with cologne or body spray all of the time. The secret to making a guys cologne last is to apply it not to the clothing, but to pulse points on the body. Apply it to the back of the wrists, the inner part of the elbow, the nape of the neck, and between the chest. These points stay warmer than the rest of the body, helping his cologne create an aroma. ~smile~
But oo I so agree there is nothing sexier than a yummy smelling guy. I would say invest in some expensive colognes. They seem to last longer. Woo ... makes me excited just thinkin about it!  ~laugh~

I also find that the hair is a great place for trapping the scent of cologne.  Spray it in when your hair is clean and dry and the scent will really stick.
