Title: Are you going all "Caitlyn Jenner" on us?
Post by: Lilian J on February 10, 2016, 04:17:52 AM
Had a casual lunch with old work buddy who is a pretty blokey guy and one of my few long term close friends.  Whilst walking back to my office I mentioned a laser appointment for beard removal and he was interested and impressed by the hair reduction and the less shaving and razor cost.
A bit of chatting followed about it stinging like crazy on top lip and a few other comments then he comes out with "are you going all Caitlyn Jenner on us?" . Felt so much like saying "yep something like that" but had to get back to work and instead came out with "Nah not yet anyway" and laughed it off.

Almost immediately I felt disappointed that I didn't take the opportunity but am happy at least I've got a conversation starter for when I feel more comfortable.

"Doing a Caitlyn Jenner"... is that a verb or an adverb?

"are you going all Caitlyn Jenner on us?"

Slightly different situation, but my neighbour said the same thing to me when I came out to her a couple of months ago. Despite all the Kardashian who-hah, Ms Jenner has certainly done wonders in raising trans awareness with the general public.

I've had a guy at work ask me that several times because of my hair.

I've been asked that too. People also describe me as "like Caitlyn Jenner" too. Prior to living as the new me, I'd introduce myself to people as "deadname, so far". Most people didn't put the two together until much later.

I've had the same 2-3 times from different people. One time my reply was something like "transgender people existed long before her" . Not a great comeback but the person chuckled and said, yeah that is true.

I've not been asked that yet but if I am, I think my reply will be, "Nah, I have no intentions of trying out for the Olympics."

When he asked me that I just said, "maybe I will" with a smile on my face.  My friend at the next desk gave me an odd look at that.  LOL

When I talk to an old acquaintance I haven't seen for a while, I've used the "I pulled a Caitlyn Jenner" line. Since Caitlyn transitioned, it's been easier for people to "get it" or at least be familiar with transgender people. Although that doesn't always work for people. I've still had people say "yeah but you're still a man" and I say something stupid like "well, your Mom's a man..." but thats because I resolve conflict with the humor of a 5-year-old...

In any case, I'm ok using it and having it used on me. ^__^

It's not a reference I want to directly tied to, but like was already said Caitlin certainly has at least given everyday people a frame of reference to what it means to be transgender that they most likely never had before.

Didn't take the opportunity? "Nah not yet anyway" is pretty big and quite the conversation starter. You should be proud. You told the truth as I see it.

Told my wife this last night and her response was "subtle as brick isn't he" :)

Thinking about this the thing I liked the most is that although Caitlyn Jenner as a proxy for the trans-woman experience is problematic she does create a common touch point that is mostly positive and easy to understand for most people. And when coming out to people I expect the "Ah like Caitlyn Jenner!" to be thrown around alot which admittedly is better than "So are you gay?" or "Like a drag queen?".

Funny,  my neighbor did that to me when I came out to her last month.  No kidding,  "going Caitlyn Jenner?"

I was still at the beginning of figuring out what I was and where I was going, so I was taken aback.

Asked today,  I might give a shrug :-)

Caitlyn Jenner most certainly has highlighted how even Alpha males can be TG. She made my explanation to many much easier and especially to my 14 year old daughter and my sister. I used to use the " are you becoming like Caitlyn Jenner" as my way easy way of coming out. Thank you Caitlyn for your help.

I got outted to a person and they're like, OMG If you're trying to pass as a lady, you need to wear make-up! You'll always be a MAN.

Except, I'm FtM. So it sort of pleased me, but also, I don't think people are aware that ftm exists at all and think all trans people are ladies  >.>;

That's so funny!
I wish people did know the difference between MTF and FTM. I can't tell you the number of people I've met that call MTF girls 'trans-guys'. I have to straighten them out and they're like 'you mean there's [FTM's] too?!'

Grrr... Those dang un informed masses of people. Kind of sucks that they're the ones voting on whether or not we get rights...

I can relate. I've been to support group meetings where they all thought I was FTM and I'm actually MTF.

I think a caitlynjenner would be a person who caitlynjens, so the verb would be to caitlynjen.

"I'm caitlynjenning". "I caitlynjenned when I was 30".

My tablet adds words I type into its dictionary, so Google will now believe those are real words.

Shortly after I went full time someone asked if I was becoming a guy. Flattering. Or weird, considering I had noticeable beard shadow, a flat chest, and a long skirt. I don't think people are aware of how any trans person goes through transition.

I am still looking for the magic machine that you walk in one side and out the other fully transitioned which is how most people think of it I think. A bit like the quick change booth in "the goodies"  (obscure reference).
